Have you guys heard any of these lines in game? Payday backstory is so badly needed, here we get a sneak peak into the character's fears and inhibitions and I try to find a deeper meaning in it all!

I like to think of the "Batteries Low" line as a fear that Jacket might be afraid he's going to die soon. As in "his" batteries not the tape's.

Jacket's line "Your name is not jacket" is because in Hotline Miami Richard talks about how jacket doesn't even remember who he is. The "You are responsible line" is probably something like you are responsible for your girlfriends death.
Or maybe he's responsible for helping start the path that led to the many nukes being dropped.
Now, of course, the events of Hotline Miami 2 aren't canon to the Payday universe, but he still did go on his killing spree.
Richard Returns Jacket was not responsible for the nukes . the seargent he used to work with in the army killed the russian and american leaders which leads to the nukes being droped . Jacket in Payday thinks he is responsible for all the deaths he caused and he regretted it .
Jacket did contribute a lot to the nukes, the entire reason it happened is because the Sergeant killed the Russian President and the only reason he came to the US is because of hate crimes towards Russian, which Jacket's actions contributed a lot to, especially by 91.

Jimmy's voice lines come from his deep and irrational fear of his original body dying and how he will no longer be able to experience life to the absolute fullest, which he does using his clones. The voice could belong to either one of his many lovers or one of the two women who help Henry find his wife on the truck.
Oh I love this moment when there's a fight at the road in "Hardcore Henry"
I'm super late, but I'm almost certain that the woman in Jimmy's line is Estelle - she sounds SUPER similar to Haley Bennett. And, given the twist at the end, I don't think it would be a massive leap in logic to assume Estelle and Jimmy at least knew of each other, since they both worked under Akan at some point.
Also, maybe some of Henry's memories, which was uploaded to him (since i don't think Estelle might have been with Henry really), was recorded from James's memories with her, after which some sadful events happened.
I wouldn’t call it irrational, the guy is a quadriplegic and a telekinetic billionaire wants him dead. I bet that half the reason his personas even heist is so that if “jimmy” gets caught he can die in prison and Akan will leave him alone.

"Jacket" is most likely the persona he gave himself so he would not feel bad about murdering the entire Russian mafia and crippling the Russian forces invading Hawaii. Eventually overtime he started to believe he was ACTUALLY Jacket. The "You are responsible" voice line is most likely him feeling guilty about the death of his friends, Beard, Barnes, Jake, and hundreds of others.
It bothers me there are still people who mistake Jake with Daniels.

"Jacket" was given by the community of Hotline Miami.
Matriones The only fault Jacket had in his girlfriend's death is emotionally investing to her. Which is part of what fueled him to kill the russians on his own, without the instruction of the phone calls. But alas, it meant nothing. Just like what the Chicken mask told him.

WARNING : SPOILERS.
Actually the Jacket that is playable in PAYDAY 2 is what Jacket would've become if the USA didn't get bombed by USSR. He still got to prison for his actions but Bain heard about it and freed him from prison to get him to work for him as a "messenger".
His traumatic experience of life and time spent talking to nobody in prison made him scared of talking to people, and he still enjoys violence.
There are three evidences here :
- 1 : His face. He looks like he's in his 50's. He could even be almost as old as Rust. His age is unknown, making this even more possible. Assuming he joined the millitary at 18 yo in 1985 (russo-american conflict in Hawaii) he is at least 46 years old.
- 2 : His mask. His mask is named "The Return of Richard". But there's only one person that knows about Richard : Jacket. Richard is in Jacket's head and nowhere else, nobody could've known about him.
- 3 : Nightmare voice lines. "You are responsible" refers to him understanding what happened to him : 50 Blessings manipulating him, getting his girlfriend killed, his long years in prison. An imposter couldn't have known this. "Your name is not Jacket" refers to him just not being named Jacket. It represents his fear of being discovered, exposed again and thrown in prison. It represents his constant need to flee reality as he does in the game.
- Honorable Mention : no sign of Hotline Miami 2. Notice how Hotline Miami 2 is anywhere while Hotline Miami 1 is everywhere. I think that in the PAYDAY 2 lore, Hotline Miami is a game that lets you play as the masked maniac that really existed in this universe, but Hotline Miami 2 never happened since the USA didn't get bombed. Jacket has an Arcade HM1 in his room though.
People might say that PAYDAY 2's Jacket is just a fan, but I do think it's an alternate Jacket. Overkill didn't make his face look older for nothing.

Jacket doesn't love violence. He's a "regular" sociopath nationalist who wanted revenge against the Russians particularly, the gang because most Russian soldiers that fought and won the Russo-American coalition nuked San Francisco, where Beard was. Beard was Jacket's best friend and fought in many battles with him and along his other 2 squadmates: Barnes and Daniels. They both died as well because of an explosion in a Russian base set to self-destruct once successfully breached.
Also, if Jacket REALLY loved violence, he would have killed Biker and Richter. But after he was done handing their asses to them, he left them alive.
Yes, yes, in the first game, he CLEARLY killed him, but he appears a few time in HM2, so the only thing we can do is speculate what "Jacket" actually did, which was probably beat him senseless and left him for dead.

You know why Jacket's lines are the most haunting? Because thats how the first and second hotline miami works story-vise. Both games are about a character thats myserious and we dont know. These lines are so open, so your (and our minds too) can speculate. Its like Dark Souls' story telling. You are given hints and clues, and you make your own story, you make a story that makes the most sense to you, and i absolutely love it, you can interpret it in a lot of ways, and almost every person will interpret it differently, *thats* the beauty of this type of story telling, and im a fan of it.
espacially if you are a big hotline miami fan you will now the things that haunt jacket the hundreds of murderes and one of the worst things in his mind the killing of the hooker he most likely blames himself for it and he also cant really hide it behind the masks this time (sorry for being late)

Battery low is Jacket projecting his dark comfort of being told what to do by the mysterious voices on his devices, and his concern that they might go away and leave him alone, leading to the second quote.
You are responsible is Jacket's subconscious taking a shot at him, trying to push past his denial that he's at fault for any of what's going on. It's not his fault he kills people. It's not his fault he robs banks. It's not his fault, right? It's the phones and the recordings and the voices... right?
Your name is not Jacket. Jacket, the serial-killing, mask-wearing, word-not-using psychopath who wipes out mafias and beats russians to death with a baseball bat... it's its own mask, one he wears to conceal his own identity from himself. Deep down, he knows it's not what he is, and he knows that hiding from himself and cowering behind that mask and those recordings is just hurting him.

Pretty sure Jacket's "You are responsible" line comes from the fact that he wears a mask to not feel guilty about the things he did during Hotline Miami. Though his last line is suspicious.
Yeah, i think he IS the real jacket. I agree on what you said but i think not ''Your name is not Jacket'' is almost the same, its just because that name ''Jacket'' is not his real name. ( I mean who calls his kid jacket ? ) and he uses that name and puts on a mask to not feel the guilt. Or also because if you played the first game you see jacket hallucinating about (technically) himself with the owl and the horse. And i think with the mask and that name he made a new personality, a new person that he can blame instead of taking the guilt. Also, i think the Batterie line is him being scared of losing the ability to talk with the cassette and lose his other personality. But these lines shows that even with the mask and everything you can't someone who doesn't technically exist.

Dutch Duk I guess that makes sense, but he's the only one that wears most of the other masks in HM1. There are a few masks you can find on dead bodies. But still, he wears the masks to deflect the guilt, so wearing a masks with your own name kinda defeats that purpose.

I read that the "Your name is not Jacket" line could be referring to Jacket deciding that whatever his real name is and Jacket are 2 different peolle in his mind. He's killed so many mobsters and cops and so brutally and tearlessly. And so he blames all these crimes on "Jacket" an alter ego he uses to not feel responsible. "It wasn't me, it was Jacket" then the NecroCloaker is playing off of that, saying that his name isn't Jacket. Jacket doesn't exist. He is the one doing all these heinous crimes, not Jacket.

Personally I think tge reason Pardos murders started to get more gruesome and sloppy is due to the fact that the media is more focused on Jackets trails rather than Pardos murders so to get attention he had to take things up a notch. I don't remember Jimmy having any lady companions in Hardcore Henry. You'll find out Jimmy has a reason for that lifestyle though.
Hoxton and Clover have history, even before joining the Payday gang. One of the lore messages on the loading screen says something along those lines. Maybe the "their all dead!" and "I know I'll die young" lines are connected? Makes sense that they would have ran together on at least a few jobs before...
The wolf one sounded more like wolf did something wrong and a family member or close friend questions him.

Wolf's line might be him saying that to one of his colleagues back when he ran a company when that employee made a decision that doomed the whole company or it could be one of his family members saying that to him when he suffered his psychotic break back in Sweden.
Something really interesting is how every character has a 3rd person talking in the voice lines except Jacket, he is all alone and the fact that he has no one in his life is not a problem for him anymore.
You are responsible: He is responsible for the death of Beard, the death of his girlfriend, and the destruction of his life
Your name is now Jacket: He doesn’t want to open up and accept who he is and what he has done. Once the battery runs out, they all know his name, they’ll all see him for who he is.
i think the line "your name is not jacket" line means he has a fear of being caught and having all the blame that has fallen on his sorta alter ego jacket fall on him and tarnish his real name and everyone would be so disappointed in a former veteran having done these horrible crimes
Jacket's tape recorder battery and Sydney's mother are the most haunting ones in my opinion... The fear of having your crutch taken away, the trauma of horrible parenrs...

I think the clover line has something to do with the fact that she joined the gang to steal the diamond. Throughout history people have died over the diamond time and time again, maybe she's scared that she'll die or members of the crew will die over it
To me it sounded like Wolf's voice line was from himself to himself. It may be him asking himself "what are you doing?" as though he still has a shred of humanity left

It's kind of amazing to see how well a character of other game (Jacket) fits so well in payday!
"You are responsible". The thing about Jacket's character is that he hides behind a mask. In order to ease his psyche, Jacket creates personas out of his masks. For example, the rooster mask that Jacket wears is known as Richard in Hotline Miami. This way, when Jacket goes on a killing spree once he takes the mask off he's himself again. His mind uses his mask as a scapegoat, another person he can shift the moral blame onto. But at the end of the day, he's still the one in the mask. He can't escape his responsibility. He doesn't want to admit he's a monster, and that's what terrifies him. "You're not Jacket" I always thought that was Jacket's fear of slipping, of losing his true self and becoming his murderous persona all of the time. But that was just my take on it.
The cloaked should have said "He was your friend" as a reference to beard... or "You let her die" as a reference to Jacket's girlfriend... or "Even as a soldier you couldn't win or even stop a war"
jacket said "you are responsible" because he is responsible for all the murders he has done on the past.he also said he is not jacket because he is trying to get his mind set that he is not a murderer aka jacket.
There is also that line from the original Hotline Miami " knowing oneself means it knowledging ones actions" Jacket is still coming to terms with the actions he's performing.

Well the last name of hockey players is put on the jersey, not the first name, so his name is either Sergei Sokol, Sergei Kozak Sokol, or Sergei "Sokol" Kozak

Sergei is more than likely Sokol first/middle name. some people prefer to go by there middle name. Anther thing in regards to Jimmy, since you Knowley, have not seen Hardcore Henry is that the woman so sounds familiar to Akan's wife (who also pretends to be Henry's wife) who may have had a past relationship with Jimmy before leaving him to be with Akan. Last thing since I imagine alot of payday players haven't seen Hardcore Henry, Jimmy is actually a cripple who helped Akan develop super soldiers to take over the world but was crippled when the first tested began and Akan used his powers and killed all the test subjects in the room with Jimmy, along with trying to kill Jimmy. Jimmy made a bunch of clones he controls from his wheelchair who all have there own memorizes, one of these being Cocaine Jimmy who is Jimmy's desire to sin thus is why the calm Jimmy in the first meeting with the Payday gang in the live action trailer offs himself and then cocaine Jimmy barges in to convince the gang at gun point to help him take down Akan by stealing the research data at the Russian facility for themselves.
Hoxton's line "Your little brother should give my name back. He should call himself Houston"
This line is sometimes played in Hoxton Breakout day 1.
Jimmy doesn't have split personalities, he straight up has clones and the real Jimmy is somewhere hidden controlling the Jimmies through a headset and has no real fear for their deaths. All the Jimmies are there with a purpose to help Henry (And the Heisters which take place before the movie).
I know I am 3 years late, but I interpret Jackets lines as follows:
"Battery Low."
I, like many others in this comments section, believe that Jacket has adapted to a persona in order to shield himself from the things he's done. "Battery low" could mean that he fears losing this persona one day and be forced to face the terrible things he's done.
"Your name is not Jacket."
Deep down, I think Jacket knows that his persona is just something meant to shield him, rather than something he adopts out of his own free will. And is afraid that he'll come to terms with it.
Alternatively, it could be that he fears going back to who he was before, and desperately wants to remain as he is now.
"You are responsible."
If it is like the first case(that Jacket invented the persona to shield himself rather than doing it willingly), Jacket knows that no matter who he pretends to be, his "other self" doesn't change the fact that he himself has done terrible things.

The first line heavily implies that the Jacket in PAYDAY 2 is indeed a copycat. My theory is that the Payday 2 Jacket is a huge fan of the Payday gang and the real Jacket, where he'd even go far enough to impersonate him. PD2 Jacket is afraid of his cassette player dying because he'd have to speak with the gang, and since he's living a lie that he's somebody he's not ("Your name is not Jacket"), he chooses not to speak about himself.

About the Russian Sokol line: Sokol could definitely be involved in 2000s eastern european / middle eastern conflicts. Maybe his father was involved in the Afghani war.
Jacket's "You are responsible" should be in reference to him getting himself involved with 50 blessings and getting his girlfriend killed?.. Idk. Also could be about his guilttrip over Beard.
i think the reason wolf has only one line, is because he doesn't have a lot of fears or guilt. He's a psycho, why else would he have only one line?
There's some stuff here that just blows my mind how well it is
I’m almost certain the “you are responsible” is about his girlfriend or Beard. He held no remorse for the Russians he killed but plenty of hatred. But he fears that it was something he did, or possibly something he didn’t do that led to the deaths of his best friend and his girlfriend. And as someone else said, “Jacket” is just a persona, a mask he puts on to hide the pain and anger, there’s a normal name he’s cast aside.
To back out on Jacket's voice lines, Richard is the one in HM2 who gives hints on how they will die and how much time they have, as to pay their debts from the deaths they have caused. Other than that, Jacket never talks in any of the games, therefore I think the 1st voice line is correct. Other than that the 'you are responsible' is just his alter ego telling him that he too will pay someday.
I believe the jackt/you are responsible line is for the girlfriend in the game that dies because of his actions
I think jacket's 'battery running low' is also relevant to his life, or lifestyle as a heister. If the casette tape can't function anymore, who is he? The casette player is.. all he has. I think it's representative of his life as a whole.

Jimmy has multiple bodies that is why it seems like he has split personality because he acts differently in each body. The woman is probably before this because he is actually a paraplegic and basically on the verge of dieing. That is the reason he has all these bodies and body hops. The women is probably before he was able to do this and she was watching him slowly die.
The jimmy line brings up a lot of questions, the voice is from "Henry's" wife, who turns out not to really be his, that doesn't make sense because the memory was only planted into the cyborgs, which jimmy helped create. Which brings up the question of is this jimmy we play as a cyborg version of him?.. Quite odd
I know Jerseys tend to work that they show the last name, like Peyton Manning only hand "manning" on the back, or Tom Brady only has "Brady" on the back. So Sokol's full name could be Sergei Sokol
His last name is Kozak, we know that much, and what i think is, that overkill made the trailer for him, with sokol on his shirt, we knew Kozak is his last name, and overkill forgot about this when they made the lines for the halloween update. I think they forgot that they've already printed "Sokol" on his hockey shirt (and you dont put nicknames on those things....).
The Wolf line is more of an angry "What the fuck are you doing" Kind of tone

For jacket I think that the reason the tap recorder says your responsible is because of all the people he killed and his actions in Miami and when it says you are not jacket is probably because jacket has basically become Richard he wears the mask and in hotline miami Richard tells jacket he knows him which is strange because jacket doesn't know Richard I mean I can keep rambling on and on but this is my theory
The only problem I have with this is that Sokol is not on the back of his jersey; his last name (Kozak) is. This makes it most likely that Sergei is in fact his real name.

For the first one you could be right but for the second one is him thinking of beard his greatest fear is that it's his fault that beard is dead the last one is probably saying you're not a murderer you're not jacket

"You are responsible" My assumption is that since Jacket is a sociopath he has no care for who he kills and doesn't see himself responsible for that, and his greatest fear is accepting responsibility.

the whole thing with jimmy is that he inhabits multiple bodies (also what happened in the trailer) with different 'jimmys' that have different personalites, like the professional jimmy that shot himself in the trailer letting the 'coke jimmy' whose more unhinged and louder deal with the gang. i think the line is one of his girls (coke jimmy gets around) and about how jimmy is probably afraid of really dieing, having no backups, and maybe something something can't live a normal life by nature of his sheer existence itself. probably just reading into it though
I get the jimmy one in the movie “hardcore Henry” jimmy or “jimmys”,one of them had a girlfriend now you would only understand the “Jimmys” part if you watch the movie but one of the Jimmys has a girlfriend or had cuz she dies and the thought that she didn’t want him to die but she died instead is haunting jimmy forever...people are probably going to hate me because I just spoiled a part of the movie but who hasn’t seen the movie and if you haven’t for some reason I’m sorry for spoiling that part
with Clover's lines, I think that it's related to her family. And this is purely speculation, but what if she ended up getting caught by her family doing these jobs, and she had to kill them so that she wouldn't get caught? The second line would be her initially getting caught, most likely by her mom or some sort of sister, and the first line is someone realizing the killing of the whole family. Although, I think the first line is more likely to be people realizing who were killed whilst Clover was heisting, since she is the stealth character, so no one would realize who died until the day after.

i feel that jacket is still the same character from hotline miami. but he is scared that he cant hide behind the mask. rolling into the "you are responsible" that he is the reason he acts this way. and he is really just a killer.

The "You are responsible" could also be talking about his girlfriends death.
The John Wick line about the Dog was likely Russian, being as it was from the movie which you pointed out.
The Wolf one was likely his brother, and it was concerned about what he was about to do. Look to the description of The Grin mask (which is a more vague version of Wolf's backstory).

Maybe wolfs line (what are you doing) is him doing what sidney told him. Incase you didnt know in the safe house when playing as wolf sydney says something along the lines of i heard you got fired and went mad, did you ever hurt the people who did that to you? So it could be wolf hurting the person who ruined his life and the line is them saying what are you doing in like a fearful way.
