My thoughts exactly. I went to watch another video on this and the guy immediately started to melt the solder and disconnect wires from the switch. I just need to know how to do a basic clean, and this guy nails it.
It's important to know that deoxidizer comes two ways; with residue and without residue. "Residue" is essentially lubricant. Lubricant makes your pots feel great, but unfortunately it also attracts dirt. There are reasons to use each, so be aware of this so you can choose your deox wisely. Also, CRC makes an electrical cleaner that works great as a pressure wash for your pots. It's cheap and available at Walmart in the automotive section.
You should check out Milwaukee's line of Screw Guns. For light applications like this GO with the M12, ultra light weight with High Torque that fully adjustable. But keep up the great job!!
My only concern, is that simply applying contact cleaner in that manner, would logically lead to the deposits that caused the problem to relocate to the outer edges of the carbon trace. A good analogy would be cleaning your car windshield with your windshield wipers. Granted it would be a quick and dirty fix, but not an integrated solution.
When i select the middle pickup on my strat sometimes there is no sound and I have to move it slightly and then there is sound. What might be the problem?
lol, So....., I keep my cans of 'stuff' in one neat box , so I know where everything is. I grabbed my contact cleaner, stuck the thin straw in it , and filled my selector switch quite generously, over generously, I didn't want to have to do it twice, same for the volume pot. Then I couldn't figure out why the residue didn't evaporate, seemed a tad greasy too, then I looked at the label on the can ; CABLE LUBE - DIPWAD!! HA ha, , guitar is quivering in the corner, I located my real Contact Cleaner and doused the sw and pot a few times, I may need to replace both sw and pot, shrugs, not a problem, but geez what a nimrod. : )
Just bought CRC in a can with spray nozzle. Wonder if I tried to be accurate but was sloppy, spraying the electronics, would it do more harm than good?
My guitar sound cuts in and out when the volume knob is in certain places and it's really irritating. I tried detoxit 5 in the pots and then turning the knobs over and over and nothing's changing. It's been a couple days of this. I don't understand why it doesn't work when so many people say it "will" or it "should".
Need new pots... the contacts are warn down and or loose. Either way it's not making contact at a certain point. Pots can change your tone so do research.
Hi i have a Les Paul LTD ec-1000 deluxe where there is no pickguard, do i have to go in through the back or am i missing something when accessing my electronics?
What product are you using. It isn't an spray can so you can control where it goes without having to worry about your guitar's finish. LMK, thanks for your help.
John is using DeOxIt contact cleaner to clean and remove the oxidation from the guitar's potentiometers and switch. It seems a bit expensive at first glance, but it's much cheaper and easier than replacing potentiometers or switches. You can buy DeOxIt on Amazon.
Anybody feel a bit bad for him when he said "I've been cleaning guitars for 45 years"......there was a look of "Help me!" in his eyes, like he's been locked in a room this whole time doing it
buy good contact cleaner. I tried a cheap brand that literally destroyed plastic on an acoustic guitar preamp. what a screw up that was... pay the extra $10 and get a proven brand!
These videos are beyond valuable and so well done. Thank you for these.
Glad you like them!
Clear and concise with good camera work, the best video I've seen for this

It's nice to listen to him, don't you think so?

This. This is important. Standard contact cleaner will actually dissolve any residual lubricant and ruin the action of the pot
... so... add lubricant after cleaning?
...but it will attract dirt!! 😏
We’re screwed!
Lol. Pick your poison.
I've been having this problem for way too long. The crackly pots and plug jack. On my way to get some contact cleaner right now.

What type of contact cleaner are you using? I've only seen it in cans. The stuff you're using looks more controllable. Help, thanks.

Would this also work on pedals? My controls scratch as I turn them. Are they the same type pots?

Did you ever get your guitar fixed? Lol
Thanks you made that easy
its Deoxit D100L
I call this a liquid overhaul. I'd always do this first, before replacing these electrical components.
