So glad this video showed up in my feed. I've seen one of your earlier videos a while back, but lost track of your channel. I really enjoy your enthusiasm. Made sure to subscribe this time!
Well done Ben! I thought long and hard about the G5 option when I passed two years ago, but went with M0 in the end. I am looking forward to more of your videos now you aren’t studying!
Congratulations! I was also excited when I got my vanity call: W5JAZ as I am quite a fan of jazz music, but it was actually an homage to Donald Fagen's song The Nightfly where they sing a jingle for WJAZ. Also, I have you to thank for my work table being a mess right now as I build the node you have instructional videos for! 73 W5JAZ
@@RadioRevG5REV At the moment, the CM108 is where I am stuck and I believe it's because I have a very cheap soldering iron and maybe not the right shape tip. So, at the recommendation of some Discord members of Ham Radio Crash Course, I purchased a new soldering setup along with a heat gun. Hopefully this will get me going better. I also put the operation on hold because of the winter storms here in Texas. Thankfully, in the Houston area we are returning back to normal as the temps are above freezing again, hopefully for good!
Great stuff Ben. A few years back I did a Chota event with GB0SLE from local church vestry. Hope to catch you on the air with M1DDD or maybe our village radio club callsign G5EA. 73, Nick
Ben Congratulations and well done on getting your new G5 callsign ! I'm pretty certain it wouldn't have been previously issued. My 1968 edition callbook lists calls G5AAA to G5AHS . The2008 PW callsign CD only has about 5 random G5 calls listed. 73 Chris G3XVL
I'm looking at asking for a 2E1 call then a G5 or M5 call when I get my full. I want to keep my initials as my suffix and I'll take advantage of the request your own call feature. @@RadioRevG5REV I do I’m afraid , and most sites, OfCom included only list 3 letters. The M5 was only short lived 1999/2001 as a precursor to dropping Morse entirely. The A licence was Morse at 12 wpm, then they created the AB with 5 wpm. In 2001, when they dropped Morse as a licence condition, all AB became A. Some 17 years later, they issued a few Full licence M5’s but then they stopped ... I guess they wanted more continuity in lettering. I was lucky
Nice callsign! Back in the 90's when I got my license, they used to issue call signs strictly only in alphabetical order. No exceptions. You could pick a letter combination not yet issued and reserve it, but you would still have to wait for those letters to be reached before they would issue it. Things have been relaxed by Ofcom clearly! (Not everyone agrees with that apparently...)

Hi Ben, just watched your video a year late. I'm an 2e0 and have been for some years, my dad is a G4 and I've just ordered the latest manual to get up to speed for the full licence exam. Dad unfortunately had a stroke 3 years ago and now is in a home, I would like to get me full license before we loose him. We'll done for passing after such a short studying period. David
im still not sure about this, ive been licensed for 33 years and we didnt have any of the privileges that are offered to brand new hams these days, not sure if its fair or not, im not sure, you always used to be able to tell the vintage of a radio ham by their call, sadly thats all gone now, very happy for you and dont take this as a negative, it just seems that everything has been diluted now and older calls mean nothing.
Well... to be honest, I was in two minds... I totally get the vintage issue... but then there is nothing stopping folk who want a different call hanging up their old one and getting a new one. Ultimately you tell a hams experience by a QSO, and I have no doubt I have a lot to learn! Hope to work you on the bands. 73
I been licenced 43 years as a G8 this year and taken a writing RAE in 1978 I did upgrade to a M0 call sign twenty years ago one of the very last to say A licence.
