- The Philadelphia Eagles are heading into the 2023 NFL season with a lot of eyes on them after their bitter ending to last season. But while they have done an amazing job of both adding pieces to both the Eagles offense and defense that were so dominant in their own respective rights last year, I don’t think many people are realizing from what we’ve seen in the Eagles preseason and training camp thus far, what Nick Sirianni & company actually intend to do in 2023.
To start with the Eagles offense, as the passing game is already one of the best in football with Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, Quez Watkins, etc, the running game is going to have a new look to it as well. Because with D’Andre Swift & Rashaad Penny joining Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell, & Trey Sermon, new Eagles OC Brian Johnson’s plan to use this group is a new sight for Philly fans as their preseason games vs the Ravens and Browns have indicated.
But then regarding the Eagles defense, the Eagles rookies in Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Sidney Brown & Kelee Ringo have shown the impact they could make right away for new DC Sean Desai & returning guys like Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Josh Sweat, Nakobe Dean, Haason Reddick, Darius Slay, etc, everything may be falling in line for the Eagles to be one of the most dominant two-way teams yet again.

@12inchesSofT Those 5 games didn't really have an effect on the season when you consider: We had HFA throughout the playoffs. He started every game in those playoffs and got to the SB where he had a flawless game sans the fumble. So yeah, I consider that lucky.

Eagles fans knew what we had in 2016 going into 2017, nobody paid attention. We knew what we had going into last season, nobody paid attention until the season happened.
For this season I'm seeing the same arguments from rival fans "you lost this, this and that". We lost Steichen... but we replaced him with Brian Johnson who has a 20 year history with Jalen Hurts and most likely was the guy that truly developed him. We lost Gannon... thank god, no comments here, just that we got better by default. We lost Hargrave... but the Eagles has depth in the DL, we know how to draft, develop and sign FA DLinemen. I guarantee no Eagles fan is losing sleep over the loss of Hargrave. CJGJ is the big name we lost, it's the one we probably haven't been able to replace but if I'm being honest, he had a Trevon Diggs kind of season in 2022. He did had 7 interceptions but his play on the field was just... good. We replaced him with Edmunds and while I don't expect him to be better or as flashy, taking the ints out of the equation, CGJG and Edmunds had similar numbers. And I think it's fine to remove ints from the equation because it's a non sustainable nor reliable stat. What the player is doing on the field 99% of the time matters more to me than the other 1% when he's intercepting a pass or forcing a fumble.
I'm not saying losing CJ absolutely won't have any impact, what I'm saying is that his success last season was inflated, hence why he couldn't get the money he wanted in free agency. Also, he's a troublemaker. We don't like that here in Philly. Dude created a problem for the Saints and left the team being hated by the fans, created a problem for the Eagles and left the team being hated by the fans, I'm pretty sure the Lions will have him for one season and that's it... OR they will overpay him but I don't think that's happening.
The Eagles had success with their "plug and play" strategy in 2017 and 2022. That most likely won't change. I expect solid performances from guys like Sydney Brown, Terrell Edmunds, Reed Blankenship, Nakobe Dean, Zach Cunningham and Nicholas Morrow. I don't think any of them will "shock the league" but neither did most defensive players from these positions last season. Nobody remembers who played LB for the Eagles in 2022 (aside from Eagles fans) and nobody remembers who played safety aside from CJ Gardner Johnson, yet both sectors worked very well as part of the defensive unit with the support from the DL and CBs. Don't expect that to change.

I keep forgetting we lost marcus epps, which definitely means its not that big of a loss. Cgj is a big loss we all know that but we did fine when reed blankenship stepped in. Hargrave is a big loss but he did not help as much against the run last year as he did in years past in his career. Shocker, we struggled against the run until we signed suh and linval. WE WILL BE FINE!

There are haters of the Philly Eagles; so, we welcome all of you in Dallas, New York, Washington and in all 51 states
If they stay healthy, Philly is again the best team in the NFC and the best roster in the NFL.
San Francisco and Dallas will be right there, just like last year, nipping at their heals. Any of these three could have the NFC's top seed.
If not for a series of late mistakes, and a field that neutered an historically good pass rush, the discussion would be about whether Philly would repeat. They didn't get it done in the final 10 minutes of last season, but they look like one of the favorites for this season.
Swift and Penny will be shining Gainwell's shoes by mid-season. Matter of when, not if Penny and Swift get hurt.

@@Ocean5ix I'd be fine if we just traded Sermon instead of cutting/waiving him. He's shown too much in preseason to make it past waivers. Birds are so stacked at corner (never thought I'd say that after remembering Leodis Mckelvin and Nolan Carroll in '16) and RB, we might have to cut players with legit talent just to make the roster down to 53. At this point, I don't see why we couldn't trade a few RBs and/or CBs for stuff we're weak at.
Like backup QB. Package Sermon and a 5th to some team for their backup. Hell, if you've seen The QB School talk about Malik Willis and the improvement he's made this year (I kept saying last year that he looked like an amazing potential franchise QB who needed to sit at LEAST two years), maybe we can say "look, Tannehill is the present and Levis is the future, how about a pick and another RB to spell Henry for Willis?" and restart that "QB Factory" with Willis and McKee. Or even just send 'em one of our young backup CBs (like Jobe) since their pass defense was one of the lowest EPA in the league last year (IIRC, they were 28th in the league). We got Ricks learning behind Bradbury and Slay and Ringo looks like he could be great with a year of seasoning.
Build up Willis, let him sit and learn behind the MVP runner up, and trade him for a 2nd (or more) in the final year of his contract to the Jets after Rodgers either retires or falls off a cliff (or some other potential future QB-needy team.. like the Buccaneers if they miss out on the Caleb/Maye/Penix sweepstakes).

last year was vastly different the chances of them having 14 and 3 are very slim considering the teams they are facing and the other elite qbs they have to face is no joke . They didn't have to go up against Alllen Maholmes and even tua could reallly light that backend up like a Christmas tree and they seemed thin at certain positions whether its linebacker or at safety and even corner

The coordinators ain't that big of a deal. The DC wasn't good. The OC was Great, but the new OC was in the Squad Ly. He had major input. The Offense will be should be more Dynamic this season.
Not sure if this is a good thing or not but Eagles have also signed Matt Patricia to help out on the defensive side of the ball

I don’t understand the Swift love. Yeah sure he should preform better behind a better (yet aging) Offensive line. But He fails to make the correct reads constantly and tries to play hero ball alongside never being able to stay healthy. Those three things are exactly why the Eagles felt the need to get rid of and limit the touches of Miles Sanders. Don;t get me wrong from a trade perspective it was perfect but I don;t know why the fans and fantasy community are getting super pumped about Swift.

I don't like a 4:25 game on the road on Sunday followed by a Thursday. Atleast give them a 1 o'clock on that Sunday. Hopefully they are clicking going into the season. GO BIRDS!!!
Losing guys like Epps, Edwards, and White was...fine. They were mid players at best that benefitted from an all time great DLine and two lockdown CBs. CJGJ might be a bigger loss, or he could have been in a right place, right time situation; only time will tell there. Hargrave is a loss at the pass rush, and we will miss the push up the middle is Carter and Davis can't do it, but our run D will absolutely improve.
I think Brian Johnson will do well in Stiechen's place, they won't miss a beat. Desai might be a step up from Gannon, the feeling in Philly is the D underperformed for all the talent they had.
It's funny, because they did lose some players, but most of them were not big names coming into the season and most of the city saw them as serviceable, but mid at best. While they got big contracts and the people outside the city see Epps and Edwards as almost 'big' names now. All I hear from the outside is how much they lost and how they will take a step back. While everyone in the city that sees the blue chip talent that brought in and who is stepping up is asking if they have MORE talent on the team than last year.
My thoughts are if swift and penny can stay healthy they have a very scary offense ABD defense! I’m a cowboys fan but give credit where credit is due?

I hear you. For one i believe you mean the 2011 team with DRC, Nnamdi, Vince Young, Among others. But the only actual similarities between that year and this year is that the team has huge expectations, and is an NFC favorite....but theres some key differences that are more important. For one, most of our stars have come through the draft and nearly AALL of our stars (whether drafted or signed) have played together for at least 1 - 2 years lr more and have a track record of success, as a team and individually. Where as in 2008 it was a team where almost all the hype was generated from free agents who were high priced, in some cases horrible matches systematically, and all signed that offseason. Which that strategy has really never worked out for teams when they try to build a great team with a large number of free agents and not as many stars coming from the draft. This team also has a QB who is coming off a potentially MVP discussion worthy season and has likely not even reached his ceiling yet. A young coach and staff who have gotten better and more comfortable every year (even with new coordinators), where as that was definitely NOT the case in 2011. Andy was coming to an end as many fans had some valid frustrations with him at the end there (i love andy as he is one of the coaching goats, but both him and the team needed a fresh start) and Vick was the starter...he was coming off a great year in 2010 (where I genuinely think we win the SB if Akers hadn't had an unusually rough NFC WC gm vs GB) and probably his best year as a passer, but there are so many differences between Hurts and Vick (and i have been aand continue to be a big fan of both) that outside of them both being black QBs who can hurt defenses on the ground, and that both became better passers during their careers, you can't say much else. And even both of those things are only similarities because they are vague since their running styles are completely different, Hurts is a much better passer at this point (even tho he was arguably worse than vick to start his career) , ability to read defenses, go through progressions, knowing when to go down or throw it away, and rhe list goes on. And honestly one of the most obvious and detrimental reasons we went from supposed dream team to struggling to get a W is because 2 of our biggest signings , the CBs, were both expected to go from playing s lot of man coverage (where they excelled) to playing a ridiculous amount of the time in zone coverage, which neither seemed very comfortable doing at that rate and it showed ..and maclin and d jax were a really good duo...they are not even close to being AJ snd Smith (who again have already proven how good they are). I mean the list goes on. We all shouldve seen (and im sure many did) the numerous signs that the 2011 team had some major issues/problems going into the season. But i think so many were excited to see Vick lead the team after what he did in 2010 that we overlooked so many other things and solely focused on that and how big the names we signed were...but teams dont resign FAs for a reason. Sometimes the reason is simply money but usually its a combination of money and eithet depth or value of that player.
Well see what happens this year, but its hard to believe the team wont be one of the best in the NFL..barring multiple injuries.
If this team struggles it would definitely be for completely different reasons then that 2011 garbage

I was a QB and also a Punter ... I could easily punt the ball to 50-60 yards at will ... One thing I notice, is when they show the punt from "behind" the Punter, whenever you see the ball come off of the "inside" of his foot, it's a bad punt ...
The punt is supposed to come off of the "middle to the outside" of your foot ... When I watch that view when he is punting, almost always, the punt comes off the inside of his foot (where all your power comes from) ... That is VERY bad, and NOBODY seems to care ...
I find that WAY unacceptable ...
@@MarketingStrategy101 Appreciate the “insider information” on punting brotha!!!A close friend of mine punted in HS, and I remember him showing me how to hold it and “hit it” with the “middle to outside” of the foot. There is certainly an “art” to it! Such an under appreciated skill set.
I’ll have to pay closer attention to Siposs the next time I see him. That is INSANE that he is hitting it on the INSIDE of his foot!!!
