  • With a split rotor and a frozen front caliper, the old Shovel needed some love on the front wheel. Today I replaced the front rotor and hung the rebuilt front caliper. With these little upgrades, the 79 is one step closer to that test ride.

Went to thr part of your video showing the reassemble of the 2 banana half's and install of pads and pins. Wrenching on shovels a fun hobby 4 sure and teaches patience. Trying to keep old Flh as it came from the factory. Dave

Thanks for watching! They sure are fun. I do enjoy them all. Patience is something that I know I need to continue to work on. Hope you’re doing well with your FLH.

Front axle nut to 50 lbs/foot torque please for bearing correct endplay. See/hear how badly the wheel drags when spinning after caliper install? Correct the bearing endplay with correct torque. Check bearing spacer next time the wheel is off. Torque the rotor mounting bolts. Install the missing spring on the front caliper to give it proper play. Buy a Harley-Davidson service manual and parts manual for that bike. Sell it with the bike when time comes to part with it. My 77 FLH front wheel spins freely like a brand new Harley with the original banana caliper on it and original rotor because I have the correct tolerances per the service manual. I love your videos, Liked and a long time Subscriber!! 🙂

Once on a 1979 Sportster, once on a 1977 Electra-Glide a bolt that hold the brake disk backed out. I wish you would use a torque wrench or disclaimer to newbies who follow your procedures not understanding where they err.

I do know that these older bikes will shake the bolts out of them and will go through and torque everything to spec. I’ve lost a few bolts to things along the way.

No brake system grease on the brake pad pins?

It is something I need to do yet. I need to invest in more consumables. Chemicals to keep on hand. All of the things that o have at the house just not in the shop in the proper spots. I have to write a lot down otherwise I forget and have to come back to it.

Front crash guards, yes. Rear. I have a couple of nice sets with the side rails and everything. As for saddlebags. I may have some that aren’t listed but will have to look. The others are listed on eBay.

No worries a little privacy goes a long way. I incorrectly assumed you were running a small business.
I still enjoy and learn.. Not many old school shovelhead wrenches near me so I am going it alone and enjoy wrenching the old iron.
Best to you and old iron.
