    Great stuff coach. I think this is one of your best videos, quite innovative topic. I coach amateur teams in the UK, I see a lot of 5-3 structures over here, always looking for ways to attack this.

    I really enjoyed this. I've generally told my QBs to follow many of these same things when figuring out coverages.
    We generally teach MOFO? Press? Motion?
    This helps reaffirm many of those principles.

    Just a simple adjustment to your Jet Power Read, on the End/Mike Scrape. Tell your BSG to kick out the End if he squeezes (since he is in the guard's way anyway), Gamble on your QB keeping the ball and the middle is wide open. It is a little tougher for the guard, but if he can handle it, the defense cannot be right. It was a little adjustment that we found a lot of success with. Love the content coach!!!

    Coach Mac, can you do a video on how you would defend the power read out of the 4-2-5?

    i played football in junior college. did not play in high school and i fell in love with the sport. i didnt make it far but i was mad as hell i didn't play earlier. what i wish someone did for guys in high school is make a video explaining what i call "The Sum of 5" teaching formations.... 1 back = 4 receiving players, 2 back = 3 receiving players and so and so... you seem like a good teacher so i thought id drop this request.... i didnt play in highschool, my highschool program is and was shit and its because they didnt spend time teaching football. football IQ is as important than physical ability, if not more. then after you explain "the sum of 5" then you explain the back field in the flex. this is what kids is missing. I PRAY i have a boy so i can teach him everything i learned. since i missed out i really put the time in understanding the game to a Tee. im fascinated. next what i learned is that their is a defensive disconnect with kids leaving high school and going to the next level. that disconnect is the 4-3, they seem to be behind when coaches try to teach nickle assignment/ rover assignment/ and when the stunt positions turn bucks.... it all made sense to me after the fact lol. What i learn is that most corners (and im sure this is true with other positions) only know THEIR assignment and that is it. that is where the mistakes happen and limits a kids opportunity because then they are not versatile. another disconnect is when the DB's start getting into banjo and the 4-4 concept, their absolutely lost and get confused on how banjo differs from cover 3 and when to ring the possible banjo alarm ( i watch big time d1 guys on TV blow this concept as well here and there). i was really observant of these disconnect because of my situation of not playing in life prior to that stint.. i did how ever almost play at my highschool but was lost and it was because no one was teaching football, they were teaching how to collect their paycheck. the reason why i was able to make the team is because i realized that these guys coming out of these mediocre HS programs didnt know shit either.

      One of the first things we always try to teach our kids is how many backs are in the backfield. Once you recognize that there can only be so many receivers, now figure out who and where they are. We play all our coverages based on number of receivers and who they are.

    • @gxr-digital8024
      @gxr-digital8024 4 роки тому

      @@CoachMac im sure your kids are dialed in.... you are a real coach. most hs programs in my area stay in the flex only and on defense their backers and deep middle safety are freelancing and the coverage is always man. the out of town juco transfers are killing them. its crazy almost no kids from my area go on and make the local juco team. they are simply not equipt wit the mental tools.i always say to my self that im the best DB to come out of my high school over the last decade and i didnt even play lol. i was the only guy from my hs who made it through tryouts. felt great (HS coach didn't even give me the time of the day). all i did was pay close meticulous attention in the class room. that + my speed pushed me over the hump. now i wasnt no star but i did fall in love with the game. i always think back like man if i had a coach in hs that was competent (like you).. what could have happend? lol. first day in pads ever in juco i was terrified...by the end of the day i was hooked. its funny, your kids probably dont know how blessed they are having a coach like you. from what i see, your kids are leaving HS ready to kill it! plug n play

      Thank You, it is a struggle nowadays trying to teach football IQ and keeping it simple yet effective. Depends on the kids year to year

    Good stuff coach, as always, and Happy New year. how does the understanding of structure change when facing odd fronts, since most of the ones I see still keep a two high structure.

    • @MCarter40881

      Maurice Upshaw Jr same question I have. He must see a lot of even fronts

    • @CoachMac
      @CoachMac  7 років тому +1

      Odd front stuff normally doesn't effect 1 high or 2 high structure. With odd fronts I try to determine if they 2 gap or 1 gap. Do they slant and angle every down. Who is the fourth rusher, things like that.

    • @mauriceupshawjr1988
      @mauriceupshawjr1988 7 років тому +1

      Thomas MacPherson I thought you have to treat all down line and interior backs as two gaps players vs the odd front

    • @CoachMac
      @CoachMac  7 років тому +1

      You have to assume they have 2 way go's but that doesn't make them 2 gap players. If they slant every down I'm not treating them as 2 gap players

    Good stuff coach. How about a video on calling formations. I'm still searching for the Holy Grail of formations. A method that's simple to call and understand for the players. For example if you went from Twins rt with a sniffer on the left You might call that "Twins Rt, Sniff Left". Move that guy to the other side, then it's "Twins Right, Sniff Rt". That can get kind of wordy. You could also just have one word for each formation, but now we're playing the memorization game. Over the last few years, it seems more kids struggle with rote memorization. If I wanted that sniffer to slide out just a hair to a tight slot (like the GaTech A-backs) with twins on the same side, then again, either more words or more formation names to memorize.
    I know, I know, " coach you only need a handful of formations".... I just like the ability to provide a wrinkle to the defense, to make them adjust (or not). Communication is everything. Thanks for all you do....

    • @javiergaxiola300
      @javiergaxiola300 7 років тому +1

      Dale Myers I call my formation my number so for example twins would be 14 twins right 41 twins left it kinda makes it eaiser

    • @kbeatty5150
      @kbeatty5150 7 років тому +2

      Dale Myers Hey coach we use One Word Code Names, example: Trojan this code name will mean a formation, blocking scheme, and pass routes if any. All of our RPO's are coded this helps us play fast

      Javier Gaxiola are the numbers arbitrary or is there a rhyme or reason to it?

    • @javiergaxiola300
      @javiergaxiola300 7 років тому

      Dale Myers yea there is a reason each number means a certain formation and it leather every one know where to line up you read the number left to right so in 41 the twin to the left the tight end the the right

      Thomas MacPherson. Ok thanks Coach. your 6 man box will stay like that and what might hurt you (except zero coverage) could possibly be flare by the back and Q Draw when the LB removes himself from the box. is that theory correct? thank you so much for the videos, knowledge and Time to answer questions. getting better every day thanks to you Coach!!!
