  • From www.SwimmingPoolSteve.com/pag... - Steve discusses how a swimming pool skimmer can crack and how it can be repaired. More often than not a replacement skimmer will be needed at some point in the future.

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your precious knowledge with us. I post this question in this video, i didn't find any discussion or vid's on your channel about this subject yet. As an underground pool owner (Vinyl) for 8 years now, I had to open/rebuilt concrete around my side skimmer twice. First open was for a leak, sealed with concrete, 4 years after, open again for a big rock completely blocking the pipe at a very deep level, sealed with concrete again. Lot of time and money invest for those operations. Can you leave, while the concrete is destroyed for access, the hole not fill up and putting for example a wood floor that can open for maintenance of the skimmer ? For sure the mouth of the skimm will be sealed against the wall with concrete before. Let me know is there are any tricks for an ease access of the side skimmer without sealing/filing the whole thing. Thank you very much

Thank you for the info! Going to make this repair over the weekend. We have plenty of money to replace it, but the company we want to use does not have the time right now. The pool was previously not closed properly. Lines were not blown out.

In the spring opening season pool companies are mostly overwhelmed with the volume of service needed for pools - especially in seasonal areas. I would strongly encourage you to replace the skimmer if it has failed completely due to poor winterization.

Yes, I know what poor timing this repair is. I don't mind replacing it myself, I just worry about breaking up the concrete that close to the fiberglass sides. We were told the pool is a concrete bottom with fiberglass sides. The improper winterization is the only thing I think could have caused such damage. Thank you for your input!

@@TheDailyPin You have what is called a hybrid pool, and they are the red-headed step child of the pool industry. They can make a decent pool, but when they fail and start to leak they are a huge pain to do anything with and most pool companies will just pass in lieu of easier / less risky work. I would strongly suggest that you approach this problem from the perspective that you must hire the most skilled and competent pool company you can find, who are specifically experienced with hybrid pools, and you should work with whatever schedule that they can offer you. You would be making a huge mistake to take a broken skimmer in a hybrid pool lightly.

I was afraid of everything you just stated. I think we will get the service scheduled and be available for if they have a cancellation. Thank you so much for your time!

Can I use the JB Waterweld Epoxy (the dough looking mixture) to seal the possible crack between the plastic skimmer frame and the tiles (where you would normally have grout, I think my skimmer may have moved away from the tile grout) at least I want to test by sealing that first and see what happens. My water goes down to just a bit above bottom of the skimmer plate and stops losing water.

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for your video.
What are your thoughts on indoor pools and repairing cracks rather than replacing the skimmers? How long do you reckon repairs would last, considering it's a heated pool?
I live in a condo that has a pool that is being retiled. It's currently down to the concrete and is all prepped for tile. Looked into replacement and it's A) about $4000 a skimmer with labour (we have 3 skimmers); B) due to building code, this would be considered structural repairs (requiring a much more extensive permit from the city), and C) again, due to building code, we'd have to increase the size of the skimmer to meet with current code.
The cracks are still tiny in width and only in the top half of the skimmers. Getting someone to repair the cracks was quoted at $400.
    Much respect.
    Ben

Tough situation...if the pool was otherwise not being worked on I would opt for the quick fix and start organizing the fact that you will need to extra work soon. Since you are already in a renovation project I would be VERY hard pressed to say leave them for now. Replacing concrete pool skimmers is a ton of work - your price of $4k each is a little steep, I would normally come in around $2500 - $3000 USD per skimmer but I have not seen your specific situation. My professional advice is to pull the trigger on the work that you know the pool needs...get it all done now so that you are not revisiting this again in a few years time. Also, some of the work of retiling will need to be redone when the skimmers come out. You will end up paying for that component of the work twice.

How do I find the leak in my unground pool skimmer

I repaired cracks in my skimmer with pvc primer and pvc wet set cement. It worked better than epoxy.

I would not trust that to hold very well at all. If you live in a cold climate area that crack will open up again for sure. The primer actually is what fixed this since it melts the top layer of the PVC somewhat. For doing the type of repair that you are doing you would be much better off using a mixture of MEK (MethylEthylKetone) mixed with PVC. The MEK melts the PVC and then you pour it onto the cracks. I think you got lucky with your primer and glue fix and most people reading this would not be so lucky with a repair such as that.

It's an old hot tub, and the skimmer housing is getting brittle. I've fixed cracks in it before with PVC cement. They are holding so I'm repairing the new cracks the same way. I'm in Ohio, and have cold winters, but I use the spa year round. I keep it hot and do not winterize other than using an insulated cover.

While I appreciate you're very evident knowledge and most certainly experience when it goes wrong as it does especially in pools underwater with different variables however I stopped the video just to get some ideas of different products that might be out right now as opposed to the 10 years ago

What about plastic soldering on the existing skimmer to seal the crack? And then schmearing over the soldered crack. Similar the repairing a kayak flexible exterior with metal mesh to give the flexibility it needs.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  Рік тому

Yes ypu might get lucky with a repair like this if the event that cracked the skimmer was an isolated incident and not something the new repair will have to endure

And your opening statement is inherent within it like Doom which is not true at all it may take some pain in the ass work but you can repair it perfectly as good as new if you prepare it properly I mean you know this not everybody's going to drain the pool that it's at use welldeBond
I know it's not the spelling I know you know what I mean fucking dairy product that will just you won't match your finish but it will feel it for fucking ever just the problem probably is fucking gaps in the fill I just don't know anything this is 30 seconds in the video I'll watch it if I stand corrected but right away I get to feeling like if I didn't know my shit to a degree I'd be fucking calling someone like you to do it for a million dollars
