I have a cousin whose name is Time. (her parents were hippies.)
So for me, time really is relative.
Wow.
I assume she's still marching on?
Super cool.
thank you for asking this!
I heard from a guy named Chaucer that she and a certain brand of detergent wait for no man.
The best thing about this song is, whenever you play it, no matter the occasion, it's true.
David Vandermeer for me this is strangely nostalgic for me because I first heard it in freshmen year of high school and I just graduated a while back
it's a fav at birthday parties in our fam after "Happy Birthday"
I watched this video and now I'm nearly 3 minutes older than I was!
The ultimate birthday song.
in my family we legitimately sing this in place of happy birthday. i enjoy it greatly.
+Timbill Corder beginning sometime last year (2014) i posted this in place of a birthday greeting to friends on their birthdays...i did so today even.
+Beth Robertson dam, thats the family i want
+Timbill Corder I send this to my friends and family on their birthday. No one has had the good sense to tell me to stop yet...
+Metqa you're too easy to ignore. try harder.
Growing older is a privilege that many people are sadly denied. Too many die too young. If you're "old" or growing older, embrace that and feel good and blessed about it. You can do many many things to keep yourself healthy.
You gotta be strong, cunning, and or lonely to get old.
I still love watching their live TEDx performance of their song. The audience of motivational speaker fans, company execs, and aspiring millionaires all sat together at 8 am to hear brilliant researchers and bestselling authors talk. But instead, this jetlagged audience of middle-aged people - many of whom haven't even heard of They Might Be Giants - listen to a song about how every second of every day brings them ever-closer towards their inevitable end. All applause felt awkward and obligatory. John and John knew exactly what they were doing. They must have relished every moment of it.
A buddy of mine on Discord ALWAYS posts this whenever it's someone's birthday.
I will steal this
Hi klug
That's a good buddy. Keep 'em close, yo.
John Linnell and John Flansburgh and their band They Might Be All Named Dan
The classic lineup of 2 Johns and 3 Dans. Before Miller left the band around 2006 or 07 and was replaced by the great Marty Beller. He's been an amazing drummer, but it is sad we don't have that coincidence anymore of everyone in the band having one of two names
@@LordPichuPal Dan Hickey left. Dan Miller is still with Them.
@@LeedsInAHat I always get it mixed up, I've been so used to Marty on the drums it got hard to remember the other past drummers
@@LordPichuPal The current line-up is John Flansburgh, John Linnell, Danny Weinkauf, Dan Miller and Whitney Hou....er...Marty Beller.
@Ben Phillips I remember about that because he left the band right before my first concert in 2006, but I'd been following them since 2002. So I personally never got to see Hickey perform with them, only Marty on the drums. Even got Marty's autograph at a free show once because I felt bad seeing him sitting by himself as everybody lined up to meet the Johns.
My little brother just sent me the link to this, since it is my birthday. I will never admit it to him directly, but he can make me smile sometimes.
It is my birthday.
I am making it a yearly tradition for me to watch this.
On this day.
2024 update: It is once again my birthday. I have honoured the tradition again this year.
Happy Birthday! 🎂🎈🎉🕯🍰
@@Metqa that was 2 weeks ago
@@StringedGuitar17 10 months now, congrats on being older!
This was a song pre-loaded on a laptop I bought in 2000 - Windows ME - and have been singing it on all birthdays ever since - my birthday again today 😃!
Awesome!
ParticleMen hi
Awesome!

This comment is older than its ever been
"There is a whiff of mortality in the air."
He says as the twin towers in the background. Oh the irony.
That's not irony
***** Prophecy.
This album was released on 9/11/01
That's dramatic irony, because it has a meaning to the audience based on context that the character is not privy to.
Actually it was July 19, 1999, but nice try,.
I'll never understand why this version is SO much better than the 'official' version on Mink Car. Definitely prefer the bass riff to the horns.
They're both, technically, the official version, seeing as how this version is on Long Tall Weekend.
bifflarken This version was originally recorded for Factory Showroom, but was put on Long Tall Weekend instead.
@@Realwessharpe Nope, the one recorded for Factory Showroom was very different, and also never officially released
@@doubledenial8178 Ah yes, always forget about that one With the crazy synths
Yeah, the horns sound like a stupid video game intro song
that part when John yelled TIME XD
TIIIIIIMMMMMEEEE
IS MARCHING ONNNNN
anD THYYYMMMMEEEE
Is stiLL maRcHing OOOOooOOOOoOoOOONnNn!!!
Now that the fun has been sucked out of "Happy Birthday to You" by putting it in the public domain, maybe this can become the birthday song of choice that it deserves to be among rebels and scofflaws around the planet.
1) I sing it to everyone who has a birthday 2) I officially love "scofflaws"
GlorianaBanana We all need a little love in these dark and interesting days.
I totally sing this to everyone I know on their birthday, post it on timelines, etc. sometimes just randomly sing it. Yep.
I read your comment and was all, "oh, yeah, that did happen not too long ago". Then I saw the time. 4 years. We're older than we've ever been and now we're even older.
@@crizznik2312 and now we're even older
The video starts with a shot of the sun rising on the Twin Towers and the phrase "There is a whiff of mortality in the air." As if this song wasn't morbid and thought-provoking enough.
The moment at the very end that "Dings" like a Game Show when it displays each of their elapsed times is just plain silly. Love it
perfect song to play for someone going through a midlife crisis
I happened to be at a restaurant in Chicago on my birthday a few years ago. The tables in this restaurant were covered in various graffiti. At the spot where I sat, some previous diner had scrawled the lyrics to this song. True story.
This song came preloaded on an ooooold Dell desktop computer and introduced me to TMBG
I love how linnel is the only one spinning during the time elapsed section
They all look so young in this video.
This song just keeps getting more and more relevant.
My kids are in their 20's and they still get this for their birthday song. It has become a family tradition.
I haven't listened to this song in 20 years (damn that feels relevant) and i'm blown away by the awesome counterpoint between the bass and guitar in the intro, i don't think i ever realized how good of musicians these guys are
And, your older.
I just survived 38 years on earth... and time marches on.
Love this band sense Lincoln
Wow... I'm 38 today!!!!!
It's been 8 years, dude. How's 46 treating you?
Approx 20 years later...time really has marched on.
Can't get enough of this band
I hear one song and I have to listen to more and more
I post this song on my friend's fb walls when it's their Birthdays.
It usually goes well.
I just noticed that "Siftin'" is playing in the background when the narrator's talking. Nice.
Every time you listen to this song you'll hear new facts about yourself that are always true.
"No man has stepped into the same river twice. For it is not the same river as before; neither is he the same man as before."
-Albers Einstein
New birthday song dropped.
Happy Birthday to my friend with this beloved song. Never gets old. Hueh. Hueh. Hueh.
Not a silly thing to say at all. Not only is it full of truth, it's a profoundly direct and forceful statement about the one undeniable truth of life. It spares nothing in its straightforward delivery, and its aggressively steadfast power asserts the truth of mortality with unwavering certainty.
It's rated #88 out of TMBG's 700-something songs, but I'd put it in my top ten.
Lmao. I played this song for my great grandmom on her 93rd birthday. I thought it was funny then but now that she's gone I feel bad about it, even though she thought it was hilarious. We laughed about it for a year after tho. Lol.
No way, you shouldn't feel bad. First of all, she laughed with you which is great! Second, you shared something you love with her - which is even better. She probably loved that you thought she was cool enough to share a song with. I think it's awesome.
did you.... kill her with the song?
+ASecondOpinion Softly, I suppose.
+Nick Mosley all life is a slow march toward death. it's no less funny at the end than it is at the start. maybe even more so.
I'm sent this video every year for my birthday and I love it.
And They Might Be Giants will always be timeless.
And, endlessly older - until you're not.
This may be a silly thing to say, but I feel this is one of the best songs ever written. It's full of truth.
I love posting this on people's feeds for their birthdays.
Thanks for putting this video on here! We've been singing it ever since we saw the show years ago.
I remember hearing this on the radio after they said the birthdays
Bowling + Rollercoaster = Fun!
yaaaaaaaas!!!!
I was trying to remember where I heard this song, thanks!
I HAD NO IDEA they were from the 80's!
seriously, this sounds like a song from the 2010's
I love this song so much. Rock on, TMBG!
The only good thing about Windows ME operating system is that it included this song as a sample.
it's tradition to play this on every birthday
I watched this on its original broadcast. I didn't appreciate TMBG as much as I do now but I loved how odd this video was and that everyone had time dilation :)
Embarrassing story time:
I listened to this on repeat the eve of my 13th birthday on my portable CD player. After downloading as many random songs from an illegal download site that my dial-up internet would allow (mp3shits dot com I believe it was... Gosh what brain cell remembered that!?), for some reason, with this one included I'd burned a disc mixtape for myself. I remember listening to this alone at night and thinking I was being really deep and meaningful. The world was not ready for teenage me. Over 15 years later I still wonder, was I really that silly? And... why this song?
time...the only reliably consistent variable in my life...
There is only one TMBG because the universe is only so big and there wasn't room for two.
If this is not playing at my birthday party, I will not have cake or open my presents
I remember when this aired! I was so excited. It's wild to know now where it was filmed and how much the landscape has changed since.
Yeah, in the opening shot of New York you can see the twin towers
Love this.
I only wish they let the video play a few seconds longer, I want to know why this was soon to become a "baby boomer anthem".
Because their day would soon be at an end, and now it's even sooner. Consider the fact that Generation X is now at least middle-aged.
@@0okamino And now they're even older.
And now they're Older, still. 🤔🤨⏳
Love this
Here to start the new year!
I woke to this today, my 49th birthday.
I've watched this video several times and only just noticed that the narrator in the beginning is Robert Krulwich of (currently) WNYCs Radiolab! He's so high pitched and nasally in this lmao.
This was my first TMBG song. Heard it when I was 7 or so on a MusicMatch JukeBox. (Anyone remember that?) I remember being confused by the band's long name and how short the song was. I also thought the voice that shouted "TIME!" in this song was the "Giant(s)" in the band's name. Later on, they did the theme song to Malcolm in the Middle, my friend gets a copy of Apollo 18 for his birthday, and the rest is history. Here we are.
I remember this as one of the demo songs included with Windows ME.
"best, official video"
This song is so true.
Good God I love this band. And this video is pretty swell
This song gets better every time I hear it. I'm worried.....about myself!!!!
2:10 Linnell shows off his impressive dance moves. Im impressed
2:10
Love, love love!!! :D
John, John, Dan, Dan, Dan
No WAY! Is that Radiolab's Robert Krulwich at the beginning?
Band Of Dans was such a great era for the band
I can't wait to go to their concert tonight!
I'm gonna send this to my best friend on her birthday
it really is the best, official video
I must have been the very early 2000's, I fail to remember what year specifically. I had just bought my very first MP3 player, a Thomson Lyra Pocket. It came with this song included. I could listen to it again and again. Oh boy, little did I know that time sure was ticking on, I sure am older.
That's the inevitable crawl of mortality! It really is a bummer, but it's nice of TMBG to address the subject with their trade-mark lightheartedness and humor.
this is my favorite version
Start listening to this song at 11:58:15 PM and the part about the day soon being at an end becomes inaccurate.
Best thing about this song is its true every time i listen to it :P
You could call it a... timeless classic.
they’ve been double johning since forever but they were triple danning once???
"Right now is the saddest I've ever been... until now." Same feeling.
Best birthday song; I 'm going to play this for my husband's 50th. I asked if he knew of this song and he said no; he is a TMBG fan, too.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WORLD
Happy birthday Flans, now you're even older!
Hah, my sister posted this on my facebook wall on my birthday! :P
Sending this to my mom for her birthday. She loves them. I'm the best daughter ever, right? XD
Friend sent me this now that I'm 30 yrs old.
So creepy yet wonderful
twin towers in background
"there is a whiff of mortality in the air..."
Hey, wait a second. Check this out. I'm not dead yet. TMBG still sounds good.
ROBERT KRULWICH IS NARRATING. THAT GUY IS THE BOMB.
Thank you 🎉😊
Best, official video
I feel that
LFG!! 🔥🔥🔥
Time never ends...WE DO.
+shotbakerrr maybe for you, mortal
I send this video to my friends on their birthday
Awesome. :D
Yeah! Band of Dans!
When I first heard this song, it was just on the album without much context, so the obvious message to me was just that-- obvious. "Yeah, it's true, we've been on this planet for longer with every passing moment," it seemed like pretty simple logic. But now I see everyone say how it reflects how we're only "on this Earth" for a limited time, and we're all coming closer to death, mortality or whatever... but it still just doesn't change for me, and I'm not sure why. I guess I'm just not that afraid of death. I'm young. I've still got relatively a lot of time. Time itself is relative. Why be scared of something that's inevitable?
Hilarious song!!
was just sent this for my birthday -_-
Someone Loves You
Speaking of older... they looked quite a bit different when playing this song last Friday at the OK city concert... but sounded better than ever.
and now they're even better. and now they're even better
