    Back in the early 80's I went to a big trap shooting event. I showed up with my Browning A-5 and a case of Dove & Game loads. I was standing beside my shotgun and case of shells in the gun rack. A guy approaches me and we started talking. Before it was over he loaned me his backup Krieghoff over/under shotgun, gave me the correct shells, loaned me a shooting vest with pockets and ear protection. After that I was hooked. Be generous to the new folks that show up not having a clue.

      Well said Jeff! New shooters are so excited to just be there, but you can see the fear, apprehension and confusion in their faces. I should have mentioned this as well, but helping new shooters also helps with safety...We had to coach one of the new shooters to not flag everyone as they transitioned to the next position. Thanks for watching my friend!

    Its tough when its your first match. A couple/few years ago, i was in a similiar situation with a first time match shooter. He was ready to give up after a few stages, not because he was missing, but because he felt we were all judging him (which was not true). At the very next stage, I gave him a loaded mag and insisted he use MY rifle for the stage. He almost cleaned the stage and realized the differences in our rifles. I also did something similiar with another guy (and we ended up being great friends to this day! @joshcruz). I guess what i'm saying is, that its free to be nice to someone. 😁. Thanks for the video!

      Hi GMG! That was really nice of you to help that way. I've seen the opposite in other squads where you can tell the "pros" have just left the newbies to fend for themselves and that's not what this sport is about. I'm thinking of talking to the MD about me being part of a "New Shooter" squad for matches that would entail working with them even before the match starts (zeroing, checking DOPE, procedure, etc...), hoping that might help. Thanks for watching another one my friend!

    I had always thought it would fun to get into prs shooting and last weekend I found out that there is a monthly match 20 miles away from me. Next month I’m planning on going as a spectator and soaking up all I can. I understand that me going out and plinking at my own leisure at whatever distance is going to be far different than shooting at a match. Thanks for the info you are giving to us inexperienced new guys.

      Hi Dad_with-boys! Glad you found the video helpful and you'll be hooked the second you start watching that match! If you watch some of my practice videos, you'll get an idea of movement, positioning, stage planning, etc... Which should help as well. Thanks very much for watching my friend and feel free to reach out with questions via email (the3gunguy@gmail.com).

      Hi Marko! Glad to hear you're getting into the sport...Welcome! I have some other videos on equipment (rifles, scopes, etc...) that may help you as well. My advice is, keep your costs down for the first year to see if you're really going to like it, but get good enough equipment to compete. When you go to the match, ask people who the best squad is and also what squad most of the newer shooters are in, then watch both squads throughout the day to see what makes the good shooters good. Then, work on the fundamentals BEFORE your first match, you'd be surprised how much that will calm you down and give you some confidence going into your first match. Hope this helps and good luck! Thanks for watching my friend!

    I wonder if there’s like an “adopt a new shooter” thing in PRS that would be cool like a sponsor in aa like you would exchange numbers and meet up at the range to practice and so on I think that would be a great way to grow the sport and it keeps them coming back and they don’t get discouraged. anywho always enjoy the videos always happy to see a new upload.

    My first match there was what seamed like a lot of buddy’s that were grouped up and none of which that openly helped until the end of the day I’m assuming after they knew where they were placing in the match. The last stage is when they started calling shots. I only had dope out to 500 yards (longest target at home range) so the 1200yard targets I was shooting only with data from a kestrel which wasn’t close but I never knew.

Note to all top shooters is be as helpful as possible not everyone knows the questions to even ask at the beginning. More shooters in this sport is a goal.

    This is a great video thank you. I'm looking at going and checking out my local prs match Saturday. I am curious though I've shot moa for years in service rifle matches and F class matches. I understand the reticle and conversions are fairly easy do you have a trick to mils I'm having a hard time making the change. 16years of moa I'm multigun, cmp, f class

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  4 місяці тому

      Hi Michael! The key to the conversion is not to even think about it. MOA is MOA, Mils is Mils. You'll want to do the conversion in your head, but just stop yourself, and become VERY familiar with that Mil reticle and turrets...Practice at home or at your range by ranging a target, entering it into your ballistics app and then first, HOLD on the target in your scope so you get used to those Mil markings, then you can practice dialing for elevation and windage. But the key is to not even think about MOA, because at a match, no one else is and everything will be told to you in Mils. By the way, you just gave me another idea for a video! Thanks for watching my friend!

      @The4GunGuy your welcome. Looks like it's going to get expensive here soon. Guess I'm going to have to convert my scopes to mils. So I don't have to guess. I just figured 1/4 would be easier then 3/8 when dealing with distance and correction. And a welder fabricator I'm very familiar with both but 1/4 have always been faster.

    Thanks again! Question: Would you recommend bolt or gas for 1st PRS gun for a new shooter?

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  Місяць тому

      Thank YOU for watching another one. I would recommend bolt for your first rifle, less to think about when running it, not as "finicky" as a gas gun, and more accurate IMO. I think the MPA PMR2 is the best thing out there right now because it allows you to run in the production division OR open due to its price. And it has EVERYTHING you'll want. If you want to spend less money, then I'd look at the Bergara PRS Comp or the Seekins Havoc HIT Pro. If you're going to reload, then I'd look at any of those in 6mm Creedmoor or the MPA in 6mm BRA. Hope this helps and email me with any questions...the3gunguy@gmail.com.

    Off topic but I saw you are using an accutac bipod. Is there any fix to get the can’t lever to stay tight? Mine seems to come loose if I don’t have it tighten way down.

      @The4GunGuy  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Max! Yeah, the newbies were running 6 - 8 lb triggers, which really hurt them on those light hunting rifles. I run 8oz, which works well for me, but others run 4oz, which is just a bit too light for my liking. Thanks for watching my friend!

    These three didn't just not do their homework in advance, they clearly didn't do ANY homework. Meaning they could have simply went to youtube, watched a few random videos on PRS and known probably everything you mentioned and more. Including that many matches have loaner rifles. Should you put out detailed information for first time PRS shooters, absolutely. Just keep in mind that people like me are the ones that will actually see/read it, not those that clearly don't do any advance learning about the sport and simply show up.

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  3 місяці тому

      Hi Jeff! You have a valid point, but even if 50% see these videos at least they'll know more before they get there and know what to expect...The other 50% will sadly be overwhelmed and might not return because it wasn't "what they thought it was". Thanks for watching my friend!

       @the4gunguy I haven’t shot a PRS match and am in what I would call the homework stage. So this information is helpful.
      I’m going to offer some thoughts in the hope you will see this and perhaps create a video covering the below.
      What is missing from all the information out there is what does the rifle need to be capable of and what am I trying to shoot? And before you jump off into some detailed specs, let’s consider the basics that you probably don’t even think about. For example, what size target is typical at each distance? Finding an answer to that question has proven somewhat impossible so I have no idea what I and the rifle should be capable of before showing up. The other piece that might be helpful is what does a stage typically look like? Not an exact description but something like these 3 types of stages are usually found and the match director then has fun adding surprises to that basic setup such as…. All the new to PRS videos focus on the shooting positions and safety and ignore the what are you faced with down range.
      On scopes, is a 6-24 really required or what if you showed up with a 2.5-10, 3-15, or 4-18. Is it a don’t bother, or you could shoot with these challenges?
      Finding out by attending match is a minimum of a 2 hour drive each way. So I’m in a similar situation as these guys. I would just have to grab a rifle and show up not knowing what to expect.
