i found this video just by scrolling around and it truly has been a blessing. Not only people don't usually talk about The Bacchae when they talk about Greek Theatre, but when they do they usually do it without effort. You explained the entire play while being entertaining and that's very important, i hope this reaches more people soon, it needs it ! Your Dionysus design was so pretty, the fact that you didn't forget thd horns and showed that he can be both a friendly and a scary god... So many people would just reduce him to stereotypes, and forgetting about the horns too ! Can't wait to see more from you, loved your work.
This video autoplayed after my own Bacchae video and I gotta say, I'm wicked glad it did. This is such a good quality video and I'm shocked you have under 1k subs. Hopefully your channel grows a lot soon! You deserve more recognition
I think one of the biggest themes that stood out to me regarding The Bacchae when I read it was a cynic warning for humans to not expect certain things of the Greek gods, or they will bring the unexpected. Dionysus essentially is one of the main forces of the Greek gods on the way to punish Cadmus's family for things Cadmus did in the past (its a looong story), and the main reason why Dionysus is there to punish Pentheus and Cadmus's family...is because they are taking advantage of the Greek populations belief in the gods for their own desires, as well as completely disregarding that the gods exist. Pentheus doesn't believe in Dionysus's divinity, humiliates Dio publicly as well as persecuting him and his followers (that actually do believe in the divinity of the gods), and violates the secrecy of the Greek mysteries by sneaking into seeing what he shouldn't. So, Pentheus is severely punished for it. Pentheus's mother is punished for spreading a serious rumor that questioned the divinity of a new god (and therefore the greek's belief in the existance of the gods) and is punished by dismembering Pentheus in the same manner Dionysus was killed as a child (his mother had him riped apart and dismembered). Lastly, Cadmus is punished for being a hypocrite: he celebrates in worshiping the gods, but he doesn't really believe that Dio exists. He just wants the perks of worshiping him. He also has the gall to believe that gods should behaive in a certain way (he thinks he knows the gods better than the gods themselves), and is forced to watch his family self destruct.
Great video, very informative and educational. Just one quick correction at 1:33 you say that Cadmus is the father of Pentheus, when he is in fact the Grand father of Pentheus. Pentheus' parents were Agave and Echion. Excellent job, though! :v)
The amount of times Pentheus called Dionysus pretty in this play 😭Like everytime I read this it sounds like Pentheus is a guy whose gay trying to hide it but is very bad at it. Also I loved the vid!
def likes men ((as did many wealthy greek men)), but given his treatment of the women, i think hes just oversexual in general.. this man is depraved lmaoooo
