Sum up of PGDM Round 5 - The AQUA and BLACK scene are very different
AQUA @ End of Round 5
    1. AQUA T and AQUA L are caught in a tussle on who could be the #1 team at the end of 8 rounds
    2. But with a difference .....
    3. AQUA L is the current cumulative leader with a 3 point edge, but is slightly looking southwards
    4. AQUA T on the other hand have come from scraping the bottom of the pile (That explains their cumulative lower score)
    5. But it is one team that has never slipped either in rank or in SPI [slow and steady]
    6. The SPI Sequence for AQUA T over 5 rounds is - 1067, 1099, 1387, 1621 & 2029
    7. Resembles the increase in run-rate when M.S. DHONI is on the crease !! Slow to begin with, testing waters and then steadily increasing
    8. Markstrat being Markstrat, I don't want to put my bets yet on who could be #1 in AQUA. We still have 3 rounds and Vodite is opening up.
BLACK @ End of Round 5
    1. In the Black system, there is no ambiguity on who will be #1 - Black R steals the show with a stellar market performance by a mile
    2. But the #2 position in Black is wide open with 4 contenders - BLACK M, BLACK S, BLACK T and BLACK L
    3. All these second slot contenders have had their fair share of ups and downs.
    4. That is exactly what makes the slot 2 wide open in BLACK ....
Round 6 is just 2 hours away .....

Can't believe it's a year! MS has been an exciting opportunity to actually test all that we had theoretically learnt so far in a simulated environment. Ofcourse, not to miss the way you planned the course and assisted us along the way only made the entire experience ten times more engaging for all of us in our batch. Pretty sure it'll be the same for the new batch as well. Best wishes!

    Sum-up of PGDM Round 02 -
    Team Aqua -
Didn't I mention 'a perfectly recoverable position' for the lowest team of Aqua !!
    And what a recovery.
From a sub par 963 and a last position in the team scale, they zoomed into position # 1 with a 708 points jump in SPI.
Fortune favors the brave. in Revenue, Profits before Tax, Market share (units and dollars) and contribution, they moved ahead of all other teams. In the process, the crowding out effect, pushed another 'doing well' team below 1000 SPI.
Becoming a Tendulkar is difficult. Remaining a Tendulkar is more difficult (Ask Vinod Kambli and he will tell!!).
Teams that are doing well now need to show their sustenance power in the Markstrat market.
    Team Black -
Team Black, as in Round 1, maintains the same 'higher' thrust / acceleration / impetus. All boats are floating in a good high tide.
But tides are tides and don't last.
In Black, the 'Rule of three' is visible at the end of round 2. Three teams have surged ahead of the pack with 19,19 and 18% market share, leaving the other three with 15,15 & 14%. Will the gap be divided further? Or will one of the current leaders relinquish position to an aspirant?
Remember in is only round 2 and nothing is set in stone.
    Round 3 starts in 2 hours .....

    Sum-up of PGDM Round 01 -
    1. Both industries have started their Round 01 well.
    2. The thrust / acceleration / impetus of Industry 'Black' is at this point higher than the same for Industry 'Aqua'.
    3. An analogy for this would be - ceteris paribus - the acceptance of online education (among 6 random competitors) in a education focused state like Andhra Pradesh would be higher (higher average Round 1 scores) than the same would be for a less education focused state (prefer not to give an example here!!). So the accepting state's SPI would be on a high tide mode (all boats float up) and the tardy state's SPI would be slightly more sluggish.
    4. In terms of mean, Black is about 70 points higher than Aqua (reflection of previous point).
    5. In terms of highest SPI, again Black is about 125 points above Aqua (again a reflection of point 3)
    6. Only one team among 12 slipped below 1000 SPI in Round 1. They surprising did not carry any inventory at the end of the round for both their products. So their mistake was 'UNDER-PRODUCTION'.
    7. Since they really under-produced, even with the 20% upward correction of the production numbers by the software, they still couldn't meet the market demand.
    8. So their demand was satiated by some competitor whose product was close in features to theirs.
    9. This inadvertent loss in market share was what led to their SPI slippage below 1000. It is a perfectly recoverable position.
    Round 2 on Friday - 12th March.

    Round 01 Sum up [PGPM]
Aqua and Othello have the maximum Standard Deviation after round 01 of 85 each.
Juliet and Australia follow with 70 and 66 - still high.
SD comes to some moderation with Black (44).
The lowest SD is Argentina at 22.
Some of the indicators of a high SD would be:
    1. Some teams have begun over aggressively [ which at this point is neither good not bad] compared to others.
    2. There is an odd chance in the high SD groups that some teams have not understood the game completely [Just a hunch].
Some of the indicators of a low SD would be:
    1. All teams are cautious with their 1st round. They are feeling the waters carefully
    2. All teams have got the basics right and all are respecting the rule of 'incrementalism'

    Sum-up of PGDM Round 04 -
Both teams Aqua and Black -
At the end of round 4, which is more or less the mid point of the game, we find that:
    1. One team has clearly surged ahead
    2. Four teams are locked in the middle with a clear second leadership yet to emerge &
    3. One team is right now slipping behind
This scenario is indicative of many real markets in the evolutionary phase of markets with one outlier each at both ends of performance and the remaining market stuck in the middle.
With a few more rounds up, the 1-2-3 'Rule of Three' position can emerge in some markets with close to 60-70 % market share locked with these three teams and the remaining 30-40% market share distributed unevenly among the remaining three teams.
This is what Prof. Jag Sheth calls as the Rule of three.
    1. SBI, HDFC and ICICI in the Indian Banking Sector
    2. GM, Chrysler and Ford in the US Auto Sector
    3. Mc Donalds, Burger King and Wendys in the global Burger Market
    4. Toyota, Nissan, and Honda in the Japanese Auto Sector
    The list is endless.

    Sum-up of PGDM Round 03 -
    Team Aqua -
At the end of round 3, teams M and L are in the lead and going neck to neck.
    But there is a difference.
Team M is building its position steadily and have had a considerable jump in their SPI in Round 3.
They are still #2, but only 34 points SPI behind team L.
Team L on the other hand was the one who did a somersault from 963 to 1671 in Round 2. They have (sort of to be expected) slipped in their SPI in round 3, but still maintaining their #1 position.
Team R and Team T are two other teams to look out for. Very slow, but very steady. After Vodite, the market could be wide open.
    Team Black -
Teams R and S are currently locked in the same overall ranking position.
But with a key difference. One is moving up. Other is currently slipping.
Black M is also in hot pursuit and they are systematically building their SPI, though they faltered in Round 3 and could get only a small gain.
Overall quite open with no clear winners yet.

Some more Tips related to R&D and Online queries [Straight from your handout only]
    1. An online query provides you with an estimate of the budget required to complete a project. You may order
an online query only when the project is fully specified.
    2. If you change the specifications of your project (characteristics and/or requested base cost) after you have
run the online query, you will no longer be guaranteed that the project will be completed within one period
at the budget given by the query. In this case, you should run a new query to adjust your decisions according
    to the new specifications.

      Sir, in 3 rd Tip:-
      In Production number.

    • @DrEaswarKrishnaIyer
      @DrEaswarKrishnaIyer  3 роки тому +1

Suraj, welcome to the system ...
This particular video is on a specific simulation tool called Markstrat which you will learn in the 7th term. The answer to your question has general (market driven) and specific (Markstrat driven) elements. My answer here is for Market (in general) and not for Markstrat.
Over production in general can lead to channel loading, inventory glut (across the supply chain), forced push (which is not always good for a product / brand), pricing slashing to remove inventory, product perishing, rejigging of subsequent month's productions etc. - Generally not good except when you foresee a huge demand ahead (Diwali, New Year, Pongal etc).
Underproduction shows signs of lack of confidence, lack of finance to ramp up capacities, inability to rise with markets, lethargy, jaane do attitude, human resource problems, machinery maintenance problems, channel acceptance problems etc - Again not good.
      Hit the middle road.

It is driven by (but not restricted to) elements like:
      1. There are no typos in your data entry
      2. There are no mistakes (like choosing the wrong scale)
      3. There are no rushed through decisions.
      4. There is no rogue team in the MRSTLN list who destroys his market as well as yours (malicious or accidental)
      5. Plain Luck [or chance from a probabilistic understanding point of view]
      All the best.

In one of the industries (Aqua or Black, I don't remember), the team that came last in round 1 with a below 1000 SPI (a 'lost' team) rebounded and came literally first with a 700+ jump in SPI in round 2. Took only 1 round to rectify their weakness. More in that comment.

PGPM starts their Markstrat saga today. Some "generic advice" ..... (read, enjoy, imbibe, incorporate, win .......)
These advises are neither there in the handout nor there in the Markstrat lexicon. These are from EKI and available only in this UA-cam.
    1. Don't miss out a chance to populate the market with your own products. The more you are there, the more you sell. The more you sell, the more you make money. If you don't do it and someone else does it, then they run away with the cake !!
    2. Gaining market share is one skill. Retaining market share is another skill. In strategic terms it is called the Creation Strategy and the Sustenance Strategy. In my opinion, retaining is more difficult than initial gaining. Watch out ....
    3. Do not focus only on your winning products. That is sheer vanity. Equally focus on your losing products. The "lift" that you get from the winners can easily be wiped out by the "drop" that you get from the losers.
    4. Be proactive. Else you will be forced to be reactive.
    5. Data-driven works far better than intuition driven in Markstrat.
[After all sections finish their first rounds, I will give my second round of 5 gyan tips - An UA-cam exclusive !!!!!!!!]

    • @DrEaswarKrishnaIyer

    Round 02 - Some Tips
    1. In the first round, you could not over spent because the deviation was forced to come to zero. But from the second round, the deviation will anyways become negative because of R&D. Hence the limiting element is not there and so you would have a tendency to over spend (splurge would be a better word). Avoid it.
    2. This advise is contradictory to Rule 1. As and when spend is required, definitely spend !!!
    3. Plan for the long term. Play for the next round.
    4. Use all decision variables that you have to decide to which segment you are going to cater to. Then do the NPD for that segment.
    5. Production decisions should be made depending on the market forecast and not just based on how good your product is or how attractive your inventory position is.

When 40% of your production is going as inventory despite being least priced, is it the right time to do an R&D on your product.

Your team had an inventory carriage in round 2 for the product in mention.
Yet the production for the same product was high for next round (R3).
Please correct the acceptance positioning (in perception terms) of the product wrt the most appropriate coordinates in the perception map. That will solve the alignment game.
