Yeah, you bet. I mess up far more times than I care to admit! I've always told people getting into the hobby, that the best piece of advice is to accept that you will make mistakes, and thats ok, and learn from them. I would be lying if I said I had ever built a model that had zero mistakes. I'm trying to show those more in my videos now, maybe people could learn from my mistakes first before making them them selves!
I 100% agree with you about the Aqueous Mr Surfacer, I have fallen in love with it also, easy to thin, easy to clean out the airbrush and it's very forgiving, and best of all, next to no smell.
I like how you get a model even from a friend and its something you havent done before and you take on the challenge even though you mess up I like your honesty encourages us to know it happens but use it as learning experience

Huge fan of the longer formats. As somebody trying to improve my own game it's nice seeing more of the nitty gritty; helps me figure out some things you're doing that I think I'd like to try out.
The best advice I ever got about photo-etch is that just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. As to mistakes? Well....because of the meds I'm on, I can get really clumsy and forgetful. I've messed up Tamiya kits. Haha. Everything from finger marks in paint to actually breaking parts that shouldn't be broken. I've put an aircraft model together and completely forgot the cockpit. Haha. At my old IPMS group, my buddies used to give me crap about making stupid mistakes but then come to the next meeting and be completely surprised by the finish. A good friend who was a scratch builder that could make the tiniest part look great was always flumuxed by me. He just couldn't understand how my models turned out the way they did after all the weird mistakes that would completely deflate other modelers. Mark, and another guy I didn't know, won a ton of 1st places with a group build. A Syrian T34 with a large anti tank gun in an open mount. Mark built it. The other guy scratch built parts to make it Syrian and I painted and weathered it. It was a perfect match. Haha . as to how you make your models? It's a great thing that you show the mistakes along with the triumphs. New guys and kids need to know it's ok to make mistakes. Ain't nothing without correcting something and putting that touch on a model. Ps. I hope you do a build of the 48th A20. A pacific war one with those crazy markings on worn out aircraft.
Thats very true about PE! And I often leave out PE pieces because sometimes they just aren't worth the effort! And Yes, I'll get some of those A-20s on the bench soon!

Last Christmas I built 3 Hasegawa kits for kids presents. They were older boxings 90's- 06. I had a blast building them, especially after dealing with the Revell F/A-18F. I've been modelling since I was 9 and still make mistakes 35 years later. It's not a mistake it's battle damage 😂😂😂

I have three spaceships, including the Arcadia from Captain Harlock the space, pirate. Lately those kids have been coming together like butter. Really impressed with the first of the three that I’ve built, and they have cool spaceships and anime to build. I have built this same kit OOB. I found it to be the best Hasagawa kit I've ever put together. For the landing gear bays, I had read somewhere that they were painted green (I think the anticorrosion green), then when the underside color was painted, the undercarriage and whatever they could easily reach with the spray gun was coated over in that color. So, that is how I painted my landing gear bays with no care given to getting full coverage with the underside color with quite a bit of the green still showing.
What a beautiful plane, such lines and what a great friend you have to gift you that! I was literally yelling at the screen "look at the camo... no, no, no.." haha. Glad it all worked out.
I got a 1/48 Universal Carrier/ Bren Gun Carrier for my birthday from my daughter and botched the paint. I put it back in the box and forgot about it. I pulled it back out about 9 months later and started over. Turned out to be one of my best builds!
Great video again Brett, and nice save on the paintwork. Painted markings should be everyone's 2025 New Year's resolution I think. Mine too. They look so pukka.
Love the subject. In my opinion, the Italian aircraft are some of the best looking designs and camo among WW2 combatants. Beyond very basic cockpits in older kits, I've had little to no issue with Hasegawa models. Fit has been just fine and the level of detail in kits like their 1/72 F-111 series, F-2A/B, and F/A-18E/F are good. Especially when compared in price to some competitors. I do think this video was too long. A lot of time was spent going over fairly minute issues. I know it must be tough getting a good balance of detail vs. length. Perhaps break future content into separate videos? Cockpit and interior parts. Main assembly and finishing up to priming. Priming, painting, decaling. Weathering and final assembly of landing gear, ordnance, etc.
@HammerheadModelMaking I enjoyed this build. I definitely agree with the necessity to include mistakes or when things don’t go well. This is something that I’ve included in the step-by-step video build of the Mirage iiiCZ on my UA-cam channel. An example is part 5, which demonstrates painting the camouflage. My error was using the colour reference of the instruction sheet without checking other references so when I finished painting the camouflage pattern & doing a comparison of actual photos it became apparent that it was totally wrong. I therefore had to redo the camouflage after researching, checking & mixing a custom colour. Thank you for your reality approach to building model kits & I’m looking forward to your next project.

Well Brett great work as always. So to let you know as far as mistakes go each one of my kits has some kind of mistake. But when painting and finishing the kit is where the mistakes go away. Do agree about the brush painting and how it is a skill that a lot of modelers have lost over the years. As for me my airbrush iss lockedup in storage,so my brush painting skills have come back. Unless if I can get a home oh well. I got back in this hobby 23 years ago after taken a 3 year off due to driving 48 states and Canada. When I got back in started to scratch build to fix a lot of problems with kits. Also learned what is perfect build is and that is what you are happy with. I found out going for profection will drive you up the wall. I have seen a lot of changes in modeling over the years. Been modeling since 1967 and have always enjoyed it. Working on a pt boat from atlantis,it is just a fun build... well model on my friend😊😊😊
Fabulous job of the Macci, great to show mistakes as that's how we learn, I have been building models for years now and still make mistakes, as for hasagawa kits, I build a lot of hurricanes and I think the 1/48 scale hurricane has been the best kit for many years now and I like the hasagawa kits very much, keep up the great work 👍👍👌👌
Amazing build! I really liked the approach for doing the spots. Two recommendations. Try Mission Models Primers. They are one of the best water based primers, if you are worried about stinking up the place. The second one is, to use silicon sculpting brushes to apply liquid mask. Have a look at me building the JU87 Stuka. I use these brushes and they are a godsend. Easy to clean, has a sharp tip to do small application of the mask.

Oooh Nice. Hi Brett, another lovely build Ta muchly. You have your antenna mishaps, I do propellor blades and helicopter tail rotors. (Sometimes even before they are on the model.) Several layers of the see-through plastic from blister packs when very faintly painted did a reasonable job of depicting a spinning prop. IF you can find flat bits. Nowadays, of course, you can just buy them mail order. Keep up the good work, regards...
G'Day Hammer! So, what Hasegawa kit gave you PTSD?? A Hasegawa kit from 20years ago is still the same today and can be hit and miss fit-wise. I can't remember the last time I bought a Hasegawa kit and trashed all most of what I had in my stash in favour of the likes of Meng, Takom, HobbyBoss etc. The just don't do anything new these days and simply re-release shit from 20years ago but with new decals... and call it new. Good job on Macchi and nice to see the oopsies when building. We're all human 🙂 Cheers
Interesting! In the early 90s I remember Hasegawa being pretty good. Just to name a few, Revell was absolute garbage at that time, Airfix was middle of the road and Tamiya was awesome. Looking to get back into this hobby after a 30 year break.

@@mikey6020 Yea I happened to be in a store local to me for another reason called Hobbyco (which has been around forever in Sydney) when I saw some kits. I’ve always been into WW2 aircraft so I was thinking about the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk1! I’ll do it with cans and if I enjoy it I’ll think about investing in an airbrush down the track. Thanks for the advice. My wife will 100% give me shit for this and roll her eyes though 🤓

Thank you, Yes, I like the flory washes, but as far as I know there is only one retailer here in the states that sells his stuff, and it isn't my preferred shop, so I don't get it that often.
Mistakes? Bob Ross called them happy accidents! 😁 I think one thing the spots happy accident pointed out was even though it was hard edged, you had a template in place for airbrushing in the soft edges. The finished project looks amazing! I think I will be using that as an actual technique.
I've thought about building that kit. I'd definitely get aftermarket goodies like the Eduard Brassin wheel well, exhausts, Aires cockpit, Eduard PE (photo-etch). I love my aftermarket goodies because I like to challenge myself like that!
With photo etch I sometimes abrade the surface with a sanding sponge to allow for the CA glue to grab. It does help. Photo etch adds undenyable detail that isn't available in the molding process that's for sure. I'll get around to building my Eduard special edition M.C. 202 at some point. Looks like a really enjoyable build.
That is one beautiful looking model. Your method of doing the mottling is a good non committal way of laying out and confirming the pattern. Looks good to me.
I rate hasegawa over eduard and tamiya. So far ive built their ar234, ta152 and hs129 and theyre all perfect, great detail in cockpit and panel lines and go together like a dream.
Placed a glue thumb print on the starboard side of my HG Lancaster cockpit glass! Can I fix it yes but it should not have happened. Nice video HD Thanks
Brett , thanks for this video ! I find photo etch a hugely frustrating thing to work with, usually getting a gluey mess. I would certainly appreciate more "photo-etch work" in your videos if possible. Also losing parts , seeing the small piece disappear especially when gripping it with tweezers, into the ether. How do you avoid loosing parts ? Thanks for all your videos -- educational !
Oh yeah, I know all to well the pain of a tiny piece of photo etch flying off into the void because of my tweezers! I think a part of it comes from investing in some quality tweezers that wont twist or torque when gripping the part as well as learning to not pinch the part so hard, relaxing a little and using light pressure can help to mitigate the flying part some.

Thank you, regarding the Extra Thin and painted parts, one must be a little more conservative when using ET on painted parts, because like you said, it can easily ruin paint. I will use it very sparingly, and you want to avoid brushing it across the painted part, more just dab it onto the part. Use CA glue if you have it available instead on painted parts if you are still struggling with it.
Brett, impressive work with the spraying with the little spots. Are you using a special nozzle ? Seems like a very small spray line. Maybe I need a tip video. 😅😂
I personally believe that the best place to start doing photoetch is 1/35 ww2 german armor models. Specifically, panzer 3 and 4s with external armor. Easy to bend, fairly hard to mess up to an extent. My first foray into photoetch was the dragon M60A2 starship.

Nice build. Fun fact: On the real thing, the left wing is about 8.5" longer than the right to counter engine torque. Measure the kit, see how it pans out in scale. I know you want to.

As far as where to get models and supplies its largely going to depend on where you live, but there are a few here in the states that I trust: Spruebrothers.com, kitlinx.com and mrshobby.com. Both Kitlinx and MRSHobby are local to me here in Utah, but have great selections to order online!
The best way I found to get familiar with photo etch is buying one of the metal earth models from a hobby store. They're made of nothing but p.e. but at less then $10 it's not so big of a deal if you mess up.

It will depend on what type of paint I'm using, but if its acrylic, I will start with just tap water and an old brush, pour the tap water into the paint cup, use the old brush to mix up the remaining paint and then spray it out. I will do that a few times until the water doesn't get much paint. Then I will usually run about half a cup of an Tamiya X-20 to remove any more stubborn particles of paint. That usually does the trick. If I'm using a lacquer then replace the tap water/x-20 with Mister Leveling Thinner. I will do this after every use. Depending on how heavy I'm using my airbrush, I will usually do a full break down and clean about once a week.
Yes there is, if you are in the US, go to Home Depot and get Rustoleums 2X primer spray paint, I prefer black, but gray or white will also do. It is a fantastic primer that I will still use often. If you aren't in the US, then look for a spray primer that says it works on multiple materials (ie plastic, metal, wood, etc).

I leant when making my Revell Titanic that sometimes it good to paint before assembly regardless of the order of fit in the instructions ….the decks and funnels were a nightmare once glued together…..😢

Love the subject. In my opinion, the Italian aircraft are some of the best looking designs and camo among WW2 combatants.
Beyond very basic cockpits in older kits, I've had little to no issue with Hasegawa models. Fit has been just fine and the level of detail in kits like their 1/72 F-111 series, F-2A/B, and F/A-18E/F are good. Especially when compared in price to some competitors.
I do think this video was too long. A lot of time was spent going over fairly minute issues. I know it must be tough getting a good balance of detail vs. length. Perhaps break future content into separate videos? Cockpit and interior parts. Main assembly and finishing up to priming. Priming, painting, decaling. Weathering and final assembly of landing gear, ordnance, etc.

This is something that I’ve included in the step-by-step video build of the Mirage iiiCZ on my UA-cam channel. An example is part 5, which demonstrates painting the camouflage. My error was using the colour reference of the instruction sheet without checking other references so when I finished painting the camouflage pattern & doing a comparison of actual photos it became apparent that it was totally wrong. I therefore had to redo the camouflage after researching, checking & mixing a custom colour.

Well Brett great work as always. So to let you know as far as mistakes go each one of my kits has some kind of mistake. But when painting and finishing the kit is where the mistakes go away. Do agree about the brush painting and how it is a skill that a lot of modelers have lost over the years. As for me my airbrush iss lockedup in storage,so my brush painting skills have come back. Unless if I can get a home oh well. I got back in this hobby 23 years ago after taken a 3 year off due to driving 48 states and Canada. When I got back in started to scratch build to fix a lot of problems with kits. Also learned what is perfect build is and that is what you are happy with. I found out going for profection will drive you up the wall. I have seen a lot of changes in modeling over the years. Been modeling since 1967 and have always enjoyed it. Working on a pt boat from atlantis,it is just a fun build... well model on my friend😊😊😊

Fabulous job of the Macci, great to show mistakes as that's how we learn, I have been building models for years now and still make mistakes, as for hasagawa kits, I build a lot of hurricanes and I think the 1/48 scale hurricane has been the best kit for many years now and I like the hasagawa kits very much, keep up the great work 👍👍👌👌

Amazing build! I really liked the approach for doing the spots.
Two recommendations.
Try Mission Models Primers. They are one of the best water based primers, if you are worried about stinking up the place.
The second one is, to use silicon sculpting brushes to apply liquid mask. Have a look at me building the JU87 Stuka. I use these brushes and they are a godsend. Easy to clean, has a sharp tip to do small application of the mask.

Hi Brett, another lovely build Ta muchly. You have your antenna mishaps, I do propellor blades and helicopter tail rotors. (Sometimes even before they are on the model.) Several layers of the see-through plastic from blister packs when very faintly painted did a reasonable job of depicting a spinning prop. IF you can find flat bits. Nowadays, of course, you can just buy them mail order. Keep up the good work, regards...

G'Day Hammer! So, what Hasegawa kit gave you PTSD?? A Hasegawa kit from 20years ago is still the same today and can be hit and miss fit-wise. I can't remember the last time I bought a Hasegawa kit and trashed all most of what I had in my stash in favour of the likes of Meng, Takom, HobbyBoss etc. The just don't do anything new these days and simply re-release shit from 20years ago but with new decals... and call it new. Good job on Macchi and nice to see the oopsies when building. We're all human 🙂 Cheers
Interesting! In the early 90s I remember Hasegawa being pretty good. Just to name a few, Revell was absolute garbage at that time, Airfix was middle of the road and Tamiya was awesome.

@@mikey6020 Yea I happened to be in a store local to me for another reason called Hobbyco (which has been around forever in Sydney) when I saw some kits. I’ve always been into WW2 aircraft so I was thinking about the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk1! I’ll do it with cans and if I enjoy it I’ll think about investing in an airbrush down the track. Thank you, Yes, I like the flory washes, but as far as I know there is only one retailer here in the states that sells his stuff, and it isn't my preferred shop, so I don't get it that often.
Mistakes? Bob Ross called them happy accidents! 😁 I think one thing the spots happy accident pointed out was even though it was hard edged, you had a template in place for airbrushing in the soft edges. The finished project looks amazing! I think I will be using that as an actual technique.

I've thought about building that kit. I'd definitely get aftermarket goodies like the Eduard Brassin wheel well, exhausts, Aires cockpit, Eduard PE (photo-etch). I love my aftermarket goodies because I like to challenge myself like that!
Yeah, I could see how easy it would be to add a ton more aftermarket stuff to this kit!
With photo etch I sometimes abrade the surface with a sanding sponge to allow for the CA glue to grab. It does help. Photo etch adds undenyable detail that isn't available in the molding process that's for sure. I'll get around to building my Eduard special edition M.C. 202 at some point. Looks like a really enjoyable build.

I rate hasegawa over eduard and tamiya. So far ive built their ar234, ta152 and hs129 and theyre all perfect, great detail in cockpit and panel lines and go together like a dream.

Brett , thanks for this video ! I find photo etch a hugely frustrating thing to work with, usually getting a gluey mess. I would certainly appreciate more "photo-etch work" in your videos if possible. Also losing parts , seeing the small piece disappear especially when gripping it with tweezers, into the ether. How do you avoid loosing parts ? Thanks for all your videos -- educational !
Oh yeah, I know all to well the pain of a tiny piece of photo etch flying off into the void because of my tweezers! I think a part of it comes from investing in some quality tweezers that wont twist or torque when gripping the part as well as learning to not pinch the part so hard, relaxing a little and using light pressure can help to mitigate the flying part some.

I always struggle with the extra thin eating into the paint on the final assembly, but you don’t seem to. Any tips?
Thank you, regarding the Extra Thin and painted parts, one must be a little more conservative when using ET on painted parts, because like you said, it can easily ruin paint. I will use it very sparingly, and you want to avoid brushing it across the painted part, more just dab it onto the part. Use CA glue if you have it available instead on painted parts if you are still struggling with it.

I'm not sure its anything special, its a .35 needle in the Gaahleri 98D.
I personally believe that the best place to start doing photoetch is 1/35 ww2 german armor models. Specifically, panzer 3 and 4s with external armor. Easy to bend, fairly hard to mess up to an extent. My first foray into photoetch was the dragon M60A2 starship.

Great job, I am nowhere near that level of skill. Quick question-observation: Do you weather the wheel tires? If so, how?
I usually just dry brush on some earth color, unless I'm adding it to a scenic base, then I will tie it in to that with various products.
I think if you had a finer set of straight tweezers it would help. Really sharp pointed ones.

The best way I found to get familiar with photo etch is buying one of the metal earth models from a hobby store. They're made of nothing but p.e. but at less then $10 it's not so big of a deal if you mess up.

For the Aqua Gloss Clear coat before the decals do you use thinner or straight from the bottle?
I usually thin it with some X-20A. About 60/40 gloss/thinner.

How do you clean your airbrush? I always have trouble cleaning mine.
It will depend on what type of paint I'm using, but if its acrylic, I will start with just tap water and an old brush, pour the tap water into the paint cup, use the old brush to mix up the remaining paint and then spray it out. I will do that a few times until the water doesn't get much paint. Then I will usually run about half a cup of an Tamiya X-20 to remove any more stubborn particles of paint. That usually does the trick. If I'm using a lacquer then replace the tap water/x-20 with Mister Leveling Thinner. I will do this after every use. Depending on how heavy I'm using my airbrush, I will usually do a full break down and clean about once a week.

I don’t have an airbrush so I do all brush painting start to finish. Is there a good way to do primer if I don’t have an airbrush?
Yes there is, if you are in the US, go to Home Depot and get Rustoleums 2X primer spray paint, I prefer black, but gray or white will also do. It is a fantastic primer that I will still use often. If you aren't in the US, then look for a spray primer that says it works on multiple materials (ie plastic, metal, wood, etc).
