Andy taught me how to play guitar a couple years ago. I have giant fingers, ring size 15-18, and his practice tips were essential. I was pressing fret strings too hard, causing my fingers to deaden neighboring strings. As soon as I lightened my touch, my chords all rang out beautifully. Thank you, Andy!

I only started up playing my guitar again a year or two ago after finding your UA-cam channel, Andy. My first and only other teacher was murdered in the mid 90's and now a day's I've got arthritis in my fingers and wrists, but I love your channel, app and all your lessons and the way you explain things so well. Thank you, my friend 👍

I feel like I am learning under very unique circumstances. I have a disability that affects both hands. On my left, for example, I have 3 fingers and the equivalent of a thumb but it isn’t that mobile. I’ve enjoyed messing around with Drop D power chords and Open G tunings, trying to get as much as I can out of the 2-3 fretting fingers I got. On my right hand, I only have two fingers and the arm is shorter than my left so picking on electric is bearable but acoustic body size is challenging. You’re one of my favourite music youtubers and I think you are doing great work, inspiring many people to learn guitar.

Thanks for sharing this! I always like to show other options for any parts that people commonly struggle with. But the biggest thing to know is that there's always a way to play anything you want to play. Learn, experiment, and find what works for you!

Great job keeping at it and making music ! Do you know Django Reinhardt ? He had very severe disabilities after being seriously burned - but he went on to be one of the great guitarists in history...

About two years ago I felt awful after having bought a guitar for my birthday to practice playing it, only to fail at playing "the easy chords" like A. Andy here single-handedly taught me how I can still play those chords with larger fingers and to this day I play a few simple songs on my guitar to decompress after a long day.

The important point is don’t beat yourself up if you physically cannot play “stretchy” chords. Find your own playing style and embrace your abilities including your limitations. Play to your own strengths and you’ll have much more fun! The guitar greats all realized this, Angus Young is a great example as discussed (“little hands give me an SG!”) David Gilmour (“I can’t play fast so my music is based on playing fewer but the right notes!”) :)

My fingers are a lil short but its not too bad. I jus got to keep practicing since i only been at it for 7 weekish. Really enjoying your videos and I'm learning a lot from them. I would love to see you do a video on the song by The Heavy "short change hero". I'm a big fan of borderlands 2 and so is a LOT of people. I would love to show off to this song around the campfire this summer. I'm struggling with some of the tabs and the chords being used. One video showed a capo at 2 being used and want to learn it that way. I really appreciate it if you would make this video. I can't wait to learn.. Thanks a lot.

I started playing in my 60s with a pretty arthritic thumb. Which makes playing pretty hard, especially barr chords. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to learn Summer Of 69 (i don't know if this is a advanced beginner song or intermediate song but I'm hoping it moves me from beginner to advanced beginner stage 😅)
I'm having trouble with the barre chords in the song and was wondering if you have any tips Andy and videos on barre chords or if anyone has any tips that would be great! I'm kinda lost completely doing them and it seems like there's a barre chord in most songs..
I can do open chords okay and play a few songs on guitar but I'm kinda stuck at a plateau in learning guitar and losing a bit of motivation . Any help would be much appreciated or motivation boost 😂.
Hopefully i can master summer of 69 someday!!

I always give the barre chord advice of just keep trying... you *will* get it... or at least get them good *enough* to start. One thing I ended up figuring out after much trial and error - as you're learning, don't obsess over getting every single note / string in the chord shape to ring out - if you get some combination of them and mute others, you'll usually get the "character" of the chord... also, as you're strumming - on downstrum - a lot of times it's fine to just pick up the top (fatter) 3-4 strings and as you come back up with the upstrum, you might just hit the bottom (thinner) 3-4 strings...that's fine - it gives some variability to the sound (barre chords by their nature typically repeat the notes of the chord a couple times in their structure). Lastly - a lot of people starting out with barre chords get hung up on using a bunch of force / pressure to form the barre - but remember, you only need to really press the strings that aren't otherwise occupied by other fingers (typically those fingers deal with three strings in the middle: A-D-G or D-G-B strings) - the full length of the barre is just for stability and since there's really no other way to get multiple strings fretted with one finger. Hopefully some of this helps (sorry so wordy) !

@scottenglert4083 thanks so much for the explanation and it's giving me a great confidence boost! I always had an interest in music so I'd love to get good at playing guitar
I'll definitely be keeping your tips in mind in the future and maybe it's just practice with barre chords and not to be thinking too much about them 😅.
Thanks a million and all the best with your own guitar journey!!
