That white people talk about you 24/7 is not true. I have better things to do with my time than talk about someone who has a different skin color than mine. That's part of the problem. Black people say they are proud but they won't let go of their victimhood. We're talking about a hairstyle. I don't complain when I see a black woman with straight hair in a ponytail! Isn't that white appropriation?

My reason isn’t your reason. And your reason isn’t mine. The thing about cultures is they are diverse and spread amongst other cultures. That’s okay and honestly a blessing. No "dreads" are term used by Napoleon to describe Haitians who had locs. Napoleon and the French became dreadful or dreaded to see people with locs because they were able to defeat the world's strongest military. Even in the Bible the term is loc not dreadloc.....stop it. This is a hair style this a lifestyle. Are you or your white cousin. Bobo Ashanti, Rastafarian, Nyahbinghi, Kemites, Kushites, or Sumarian? If not you shouldn't have locs. Most locs don't allow members to have locs touched by people outside of the tribe. Some loc tribes won't allow their locs to be uncovered in public. And no loc tribe allows "tools of Babylon" Combs, brushes, dyes, rubber bands, etc to be used on their locs. Older tribes would behead you for this (shave your head).

I have locs because I’ve learned to love myself as a bw. I spent years going to the Dominican salon. Spending my money to keep up with a look that wasn’t me naturally. My husband came to me with a fade a low cut. And now his locs are well past his shoulders. My daughters locs are all the way near her buttocks. We’re proud of our locs. My daughter tells me everyday she’s so happy to look like me hair and all. I’m happy that I didn’t ever start straightening her hair. I could care less WHO has locs but I have mine for reasons such as self love and that’s a journey. Also for me locs are far from a point of vanity. Oh yeah, for sure. As Afrikaans people we need to adjust our understanding of policing people's bodies. I was talking to a guy who thought he had an ally in me about women wearing Hijab or something. And then there was the teacher being told her natural body was 'distracting students'. Taking away educational opportunities of people in the name of being 'tidy' 🙄

So many hear completely miss the point he was making. This is why people who are clueless on race and culture get things so wrong so often. First thing is he never said Black people own dreds. Second thing is he never said others cant wear dreds. Third is the entire point of the video was not completely about dreds itself. It was about making clueless assumptions on things you dont really know about. Let me explain.
His entire point was that all Black people dont wear dreds simply because they like them which is what the Asian dude said. That doesn't mean some dont, because they do. Many wear them for religious or cultural reasons. This is the whole point. He wears them because he likes them, but you cant then assume Black people as a whole also wear them simply because they just like them.
We can even take race completely out of this and use another example. Some Christians wear the cross because it means something to them. It is a representation of their connection with their religion. Not everybody that wears the cross feels this way. Some just wear it because it looks cool, or so they think. Yet it would be wrong of me to assume that everybody wears the cross simply because it looks cool to them. The same can be said with certain tattoos. Certain tattoos mean something and some people get them because of that meaning while others get it simply because they like it.
Yall need to put your hate aside and listen to what was actually said and explained in the video with great detail.

While on my trip to Asia I saw several practicing Buddhist/Hindus who also wear locks but presented with this question they would dive into a deep thought of mental, emotional, spiritual journey their hair has given them..

I agree! I think locs are so beautiful, and as a white woman I did a lot of research before making my decision. I applaud those who make the commitment to loc their hair (whether it's a protective style or otherwise). While looking for ways to resist chopping all my hair off, I learned about synthetic locs and yarn locs. Personally, I use those methods because I have commitment issues (which I'm working on) and it's much healthier for my hair than dyeing it every few weeks...but it allows a different form of self-expression for me.

I started my loc journey almost 3 years ago when I turned 50. I admired them from the 1st time I saw them oh so long ago. I wanted to do the locs for several reasons, all of them very personal. I waited because of the gate keeping but when I seriously contemplated getting locs, I did a lot of searching on the internet. I learned about Rastafarianism, the history of locs in cultures and contemporary perspectives. I found a large divide in this subject. In the end, I did what was right for me and I will never give up my locs. I am grateful to whoever and wherever they come from and in my journey gained a deep respect for the Rastafarians.
The one thing I did not expect to run into were white women asking me about my locs. No one has been rude, and it has given me an opportunity to dispel a lot of myths about locs.

Those of us who speak and say things like im a black man and i don't care, etc...as a black man with failing and unsafe communities.. you should always care about what and how you are being viewed and or depicted....wake up modern world...these are the most racist times we are living in...
