I'm so excited about this series on colour and light. Here we start by exploring the colours in the shadows. Even though I have heard of some of these ideas before, it was while making this video that I really started to be able to see these colours more clearly.
You may have thought that shadows just make things darker, but in fact they open things up for totally different light sources to have a stronger influence. This information about shadow colours makes a huge impact on your ability to paint.

Indeed, the videos popping and the end are really cool and yes! It is because of they being from this channel!
I just want to point out that we see color in relation to its surrounding colors. A simple device to help see color more clearly can be created by anyone. For example; with the shadow issue discussed in the video, we know it's going to be a low saturation, then by looking at the shadow we can decide roughly the value but we are having a problem finding the hue. So, if we have a piece of cardboard or stiff cardstock or the like, we can cut a small hole in it, (maybe 1x1 cm, small but large enough to view through). Then paint or color a range of hues staying within the low saturation of the shadow and the value range of the shadow, making sure that each color's edge is against the hole. Then we hold the viewer up to see the shadow through it and compare the hues surrounding it to help make more apparent which one matches. Of course this is a lot to do for each scene but its a great tool when we are first learning to see subtleties in color shifts.

oh wow!! that was really interesting, I've never noticed how colorful shadows can truly be (I'm also guilty of making shadows blue ahah) but after this videos I started doing little experiments with objects I had around me and it opened a new world to me 0.0 Thank you for sharing =)
that's awesome! making this was an eye opener for me too. the world gets cooler and cooler (or warmer and warmer depending of course)
another way to quickly evaluate shadow and light hues is to just knock all the way up the saturation for the whole picture and see what was really going on under the hood with it.
In sunny outdoor scenes it'll make the lit areas all warm and the shaded areas all cool, but it's easier to see that it affects the whole picture that way
omg!! how interesting to think about that shadow is a reflected by other things area! While i realised that, i instantly understood how difficult is Sorolla's art. shadows are sooo tricky!

I guess it also works with finding out what colors you need when painting portraits?
(I often see green and all that in other people's portraits but I never know what to use because I didn't train my eyes to see that yet)
that's an interesting question. I think it's really useful to help train your eyes up to see more colours and see the variety. however, when it comes time for you to do a painting, i suspect it would be best that you then use your eyes, understanding of the light in the room and intuition to build your colours. the reason I say that is 1) the camera crunches down colours to some extent and when you look at a person in real life, your eyes can eventually pick up more than the photo can, and 2) as the viewer I'd like to see what you saw and felt in those colours, exaggerating some elements of it etc. thanks for watching!

Hey Wimsem! I'm exploring this myself too! Here's too much info to handle but you can dip a toe in this :) Green is often used in the Verdaccio technique, because it's the opposite colour of a pale peachy skin tone. It would make the colour deeper and the shadow tone more convincing ... Then there are also 'colour zones', for example the cheeks are more red, under the eyes is rather blue, ... If you google "colour zones" you'll find a few images, it would make a portrait look more life-like. On top of that I've heard that someone with a dark skintone has rather blue hues in the light because of the light reflecting and red shadows, whereas in fair skintones it would be the opposite as light would reflect more on underlying blood and blues in the shadow ... I'm nowhere near mastering this myself yet but I find it very interesting stuff!!

Quite amazing. When I first looked at the street and fabric images, the shadows where just gray, and as Jared points it out, my vision changes and I can see the colors of the shadows. Pretty amazing shift!

I was intimidated by colour but now it’s super fun. The values need to work, and you probably practised that from drawing, so the colour part is mostly just fun :)

This video is priceless. I've been struggling with understanding shadows for months now. Especially recognizing the cast shadows and the form shadows and the color shifts in each of them. This video helped me understand the basics so I can explore this subject more. Great work!

I'm a landscape painter and understand warm and cool colors, also colors in the distance are less saturated and more diffused. I'm not sure if I have been doing my foreground shadows and the use of reflected light correctly.

Hello Kenzo.A good tip i got about shadows was to think of their edge and interior ,and paint them seperately .maybee paint the initial shape with the opposite temperature of the light source, and then fill the interior with local colour and reflections.Thanks for the great vids .

Just observing how the color wheel reacts to where you move the color picker is a really great help for finding out mental shortcuts to understand how light and color work, and how to apply it digitally! I recommand

This is so far one of the quickest ways to learn painting.
Same applies to anatomy. I often outline silhouettes while study8ng and my brain memorizes the way muscle work.

Hi Kenzo, I love yours and your Mom’s art and I watch all of your videos. I’m thinking your mom is more about what she sees and feels and you’re more about what you see and analyse/think. Either way I love both of your results and whilst I am very much like you, I need to know why/how/when etc but when I m drawing and painting now I try to let go of that and just feel my way through it and see what happens. If you look closely at the paintings of Frazetta, his shadows are different colors caused by reflected light.

This is so well timed for me! I have a cursory understanding of this kind of colour theory but not enough practical time put in to "see" it or "get it" at all. I've been put off by that in the past, but I'll give it a go again alongside you, then!

nice! go on... i am right about to start with colors for the first time seriously, but i am scared. i bought watercolor pencils and i am not sure about how to use them, but i like the vividness of their colors. but i dont know how to combine drawing (lines, i can do that) with painting (i cannot do it). can you do some video about watercolor pencil technique? that would be awesome.
there's plenty to come in this series including the transition from drawing to painting. however, i don't think we'll cover watercolour pencils specifically
Thanks for the video, Kenzo! I have always wanted to capture the illusion of colours and light, this topic interests me very much. Sometimes I play a 'game' on the iPad where I pick a colour from the palette (eg. on Procreate) by eye to match a point in a photo. Surprising how often I get it vastly wrong! I'm still trying to train my eye to do this better, and I try to paint from life (and not photo) when I can, as it seems this is the best way to train the eye.
And thank you for introducing Jared. I've now followed his UA-cam channel and Instagram, they're very inspiring. I particularly love his art demos.
I'm wondering if you could clarify the name of that amazing artist that you and Jared were discussing about in this video, who painted that painting featuring people examining a large white fabric. I couldn't quite catch the name and the subtitles are hopeless. Thank you!

I find it surprising that someone as experienced as you believes in such a thing as "gifts" that make you a better artist. After so many hours of practice and skill development, I’d think you’d understand things are achieved by hard work. I personally don’t believe in talent or gifts. Everything we know is learned, we’re an empty slate when we’re born. I think with the proper practice and knowledge, anyone has the chance to learn how to do pretty much anything.
the video makes the exact point you made - it's about the work you do, not having special eyes. i do mention moments of self-doubt and why they were wrong because we all have those moments
@@lovelifedrawing well, I meant initially of course. You do realize it as you go on, but you've put a lot of work into art (and it shows) and that's mainly why I was surprised that you immediately assumed that you need a special gift to see and understand shadows to this extent.
