Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 American romantic drama film directed by Ang Lee and produced by Diana Ossana and James Schamus. Adapted from the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Proulx, the screenplay was written by Ossana and Larry McMurtry. The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams and depicts the complex emotional and sexual relationship between two American male cowboys named Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the American West from 1963 to 1983.
Principal photography began in the summer of 2004. While the novel is set in Wyoming, Brokeback Mountain was filmed almost entirely in the Canadian Rockies in southern Alberta. Lee was given a tour of the locations from the story in Wyoming by Proulx, but chose to shoot in Alberta citing financial reasons. The mountain featured in the film is a composite of Mount Lougheed south of the town of Canmore, Fortress and Moose Mountain in Kananaskis Country. The campsites were filmed at Goat Creek, Upper Kananaskis Lake, Elbow Falls and Canyon Creek, also in Alberta. Other scenes were filmed in Cowley, Fort Macleod, and Calgary. Brokeback Mountain's production budget was approximately US$14 million.
Initially, Alberta's environmental department prohibited the crew from bringing domestic sheep into the Rockies, due to a risk of disease harming the local wildlife. The authorities eventually gave permission for them to shoot on one mountain, as long as they transported the domestic sheep in and out, every day. Everyone talked about it and made fun of it, but then you watch it and your soul is set on fire. The passion, the sacrifice, the acting, a truly amazing storyline.
My favorite movie. I have never seen a movie with so much emotion and in-depth looks at how life was back then. Ang Lee did such a great job with this film. I loved everything about Brokeback Mountain.
My Dad and I watched this together we had no idea the primace of the film just a suggestion by a friend of my Daughter's. My daughter is an actress and got to see the release. She said and I quote " Mom this film is a true masterpiece " you will appreciate it deeply. So we sat down and just the opening scene there was a feeling of the acting magnitude, between Heath and Jake. Love pure as it comes. Beautiful all encompassing ,vulnerability of passion. Brilliant storyline. Williams brought out a very real personification of the feeling one would have as a wife and mother. Love has no boundaries when it's true! A must see. 🌹

The movie tormented me so much as a teen ...i watched this movie when i still was in a boarding school and i went to see it during our weekend break...it made me so emotional for days that i kept thinking about the film during class.

This is such a beautiful movie, one of my favorites. I can’t believe you were able to find so many of these locations and that so many of them looked very much the same as they did in the movie. My eyes watered when u went upstairs to Jack's room. So emotional for me. I actually hoped you would go right into the corner when Ennis discovered the bloodied shirts but u didn't get that far I believe the condition of the house prevented u from doing that. Are u from Alberta? It's not easily who is not a native to pinpoint all the locations in so many different towns.

Great detective work! Very little has changed in 20 years! This iconic film Brokeback Mountain meant so much to me and a generation of GLBTQ men and women. I met Heath ,Jake and the cast several times. When my partner died I placed his ashes in the pocket of our two shirts. Think it would be appropriate to have a plaque or at least place a copy of Annie Proulx's novel in that book kiosk. Thank you so very much Scott. Rodney I swear....💔
