  • You look for the islamic ruling on a matter and come across multiple rulings. Maybe you heard one from a relative. Another from one website. A third from another website. Who's right?! In the age of information overload, a topic like this must be addressed. And so, in today's video...it was.

For those who are interested in knowing the ruling regarding the pictures(since it was mentioned in the video and the thumbnail). The following is the case for all 4 schools. As you’ll see I’ll mention the one exception that the Maliki school has. If anyone has a correction please provide it, but I’m pretty confident of what I’m sharing otherwise I wouldn’t share it. This information was provided by a Shafi’i scholar.
    There are two cases:
If the image does not contain an object with a soul - it is halal.
If the image contains an object with a soul, then there are conditions to it being permissible.
If the image is for example, of only the head, or it is from the shoulders to the top of the head, then it is permissible. This is because logically, it could not be ALIVE in reality with out the rest of its body.
If the image does have the rest of its body(not necessarily all of it) and could be ALIVE in reality (if it came out of the picture) then there are two cases:
If it is three dimensional, then if it is a little girl’s toy, it is permissible. Otherwise, if it’s something like a statue it is haram.
If it is two dimensional, then there are two cases:
If it is glorified, then it is haram for everyone except the Maliki school. The ruling there is that it is Makrooh, not haram. (Makrooh means you do not get bad deeds if you do it, but you get good ones if you leave it).
If it is not glorified, such as it being on a plate or on a pillow, then it is permissible.
    And Allah SWT knows best❤️

This is just what I needed, I've been wondering this whole time because of how the modern Muslims seem to be trying to reinterpret the Qur'an to fit these times and it just made me even confused. Honestly, I wasn't convinced by the evidence provided by the four schools of thought regarding the prohibition or dislike of drawing, because I believe that drawing on paper is 2D art that cannot convey a 3D interaction, and it lacks shadows, meaning it's not three-dimensional. Additionally, there is an authentic Hadith in which drawing is permitted as long as it's not used for idol worship, described as "except as a design on a garment.إلا ما كان رقما في ثوب" This interpretation applies to both the Quran and the Sunnah.
Contemporary scholars have permitted drawing, even if it represents animals or humans, arguing that there is no explicit Hadith that prohibits it. It's believed that the prohibition was in place to eradicate idol worship at the time and that some earlier rulings have evolved with changing contexts. In the end, "actions are judged by intentions.إنما ألأعمال بالنيات," so if you draw for entertainment or with noble intentions, it will be counted as good deeds. But if you draw something obscene or harmful, it

When you ask the scholars, in my personal experience, when they answer the question, they wouldnt take references from a single Hadith alone, there is a great amount of references they reference and eventually will come to a VERY rational conclusion and derive the reulings regarding it.
Surprisingly, this is how even scholars from the time after the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa salam have done so too, even the beloved Sahabis of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa salam.
Its not a simpke yes or no answer like if there is Only One God.
For example, if we haven't tasted all flavors of the ice cream, how can we say (for example) vanilla flavor is the best, even if its a personal opinion?

Regarding the rulings of pictures... this is like... something that sometimes kept bothering me since this is technically my line of work (I'm an animator, for clarification). To what point does it become impermissible? Someone wrote that it is all haram, but then some people said it's only if it's over-realistic. Then people brought up the cases of whether or not photographic pictures would be haram if this is the case.
It kinda gets convoluted, but I know people of my belief, both here and away do draw things both as work and as hobby.
I was told as to exactly why this is a thing though : it's the idol worships. The Arab pagans, as well as the people where Ibrahim originated, had idols in form of statues that they worship.

I know what they will say, what about this hadith or that Hadith? All i will say is (Alnahl,verse:116), read it yourself, it's absolutely forbidden to have a say in what is and isn't forbidden.
Yes, Even the prophet himself can't(Attahrim,verse:1) and he WON'T, so next time you see a Hadith saying that a goat ate a page in the Qur'an that contains verses about stoning the adulterous(a tricky way to add a new rule to islam), well , who do you truly worship and trust in? GOD or our forefathers?

We're not like Christians. Rather, scholars today recognize all four schools as correct and all four Imams as good scholars that can be trusted. And there is nothing that forces you to choose only one madhab. You can go to all four madhabs regarding any topic you are unsure about, and choose whichever makes this issue easiest for you. After all, there is a common saying in jurisprudence:
The collective agreement of scholars is a Hujja (undoubtable proof), and their disagreement is a Rahma (mercy), unlike, for example, the Rawafidh (aka Shia).

JazaakAllahu khairan for this video brother.
I just wanted to clear up a misconception that some people have about where we take our rulings from.
There is no clear proof in my view from the Qur'an and the Sunnah that it is obligatory to follow a particular madhab or school of thought, rather what seems to be the obligation is to simply ask someone of knowledge if you do not know and to learn your religion through trusted sources. The important journey then, as you have pointed out, is finding those scholars to refer back to that are trustworthy enough to learn your religion from.
Many people try to sell madhaahib like they are a quick and easy way to live life as a Muslim - this is incorrect. Many issues in the madhaahib also have differences of opinion within the madhab and the madhab can actually cause confusion and hardship for the layperson (see: wiping over the socks in the hanafi madhab) let alone the fact that most new Muslims can't even read Arabic to understand what their chosen madhab really offers.
I just wanted to point this out because many people claim that it is obligatory to take your rulings from a madhab (and actually scholars differ in this regard), but in reality the Muslim that tries his best to follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah by following scholars that he trusts in our time is also following the commands of Allah the Most High when He said 'Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember.' (Al-A'raf, 3). Rather, he could be (notice how I said 'could' and not 'is') closer to the true Sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad salAllahu alayhi wasallam by simply reading fataawah on islamqa, translated books from darussunnah, memorising the Qur'an and reading its explanations by the scholars and the trusted translators, studying 40 hadith of Imam an-Nawawi and consulting with a trusted person of knowledge online who has studied the religion in depth. In my view there is nothing wrong with that.
Also I want to say that I am not against following madhaahib, but I am saying that people should understand that before these great Imams of the Sunnah, there were many companions who died upon perfect guidance from their Lord without following a madhab, and from them were the 10 who were promised Jannah. So the rulings are taken from where they are taken from, and your video was very good but this is a very deep topic and it of course requires lectures from scholars, however I do think you did a good job in explaining to people that they need to get to know the scholars. However we should realise that most people cannot speak to scholars directly and therefore rely on other means.
Some scholars like Ibn Hazm for example have taken the opinion that it is not permissible to blindly follow anyone and every Muslim must try their best to understand where the rulings for their religion comes from. Other scholars like al Albaani have also pointed out what I have said in the beginning of my comment, which is that is it not obligatory to follow a madhab and a Muslim should ask scholars for rulings and suffice with what they learn from them. I advise all Muslims to listen and watch a lecture entitled 'This is Our Call' by Shaykh al-Albaani.
My comment is not to cause argumentation or division, it is in the hopes that it will allow ease for people in states of confusion and doubt about where Islamic Rulings come from.
May Allah bless you in this life and the next, aameen.

with all due respect brother, I don't agree with you, following one of the imams is necessary. otherwise you would end up following what your heart desires, you would follow someone when its comforting you and follow the other at other times. quran and sunnah are not the only sources of islamic rulings but ijma and qiyas are also the part oof it

    • @razamughal9095

You DO have to follow one madhab and following that IS following the Quran and Sunnah. By following one and actually asking for a fatwa on the said madhab there will be no confusion. The only people confused are the ones that dont know the alif beh of their own religion. As for the hanafis they are the only madhab today that say three talaqs are three thereby agreeing with ALL FOUR IMAMS. None of the imams EVER said three talaqs are one. But their followers today are trying to pin this on them. As for socks, the hanafis simply say that cotton socks did not exist at the time of the Prophet so wiping over then would not be valid. Only if it is a leather sock.

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, or the Verses of the Qur'an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).
It’s was narrated from Abī Sahbā al-bakrī رحمه الله that he was listening to ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه and he asked about about this ayah( (وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِى لَهْوَ الحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللهِ بغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ). ʿAbdullāh said: “It is music, By Allāh whom there is no deity besides him and he repeated this three times. “
This is also the statement of ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنه, Jābir, ‘Ikrimah, sa’eed ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, makhūl, and ʿUmar ibn shu’aib رحمهم الله.
There are other Ayāt that prove this as well and Ḥadīth but this should be enough for the one who seeks the truth.
Brother I urge you don’t speak about the religion of Allah without any knowledge, lest you destroy yourself without knowing.
As a reminder for me and everyone else who shall read this Allāh عز وجل said:
      ‎فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦٓ
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses?
      Sūrah ‘Arāf 37
Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."
      Sūrah ‘Araf 33
If I’ve made any mistakes please clarify them to me so that I may correct it.
May Allāh guide us to the straight path and forgive us for our sins.

Do not believe those rumors. Haram stuff is explained with definitive lines in the book. Go check out The Book, not the google or local religious dude. Most of them come from centain people trying to proteect people from west's bad habits or teaching children. you know what's funny?
if you consider music to be defined as any intentional production of sounds in a certain pattern, using any non-organic instruments, then all the sounds coming from your devices count as music.
i.e it wouldn't matter if the bg soundtracks were vocals only, because the sounds are still coming from a device.

The origin of the sounds made from your device wouldn't have been some string instrument if it was a vocals only sound track, therefore its not considered music because the origin of the sound is not from an instrument.
Same goes with cameras, photos are just capturing light, just as mirrors are reflection of light, so you are not actually drawing out imitation of creation. However photoshopping bodily features is haram and falls under the category of tasweer (image making) which is prohibited.

Your claims that scholars make rulings based on culture instead of Islam is unfounded and shameful. Even if you’re a non Muqalid and don’t follow any school the aya and hadith in Bukhari is quite clear about music being haram:

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah…” [Luqman 31:6]

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this ayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3/451)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zina, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhari ta’liqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsul by al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Sahihah by al-Albani, 91)
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is a sahih hadith narrated by al-Bukhari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as evidence and stated that it is mu’allaq and majzum. He said: Chapter on what was narrated concerning those who permit alcohol and call it by another name.
This hadith indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haram. The first is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haram according to shari’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haram, i.e., zina and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haram, why would they be mentioned alongside these things? (adapted from al-Silsilah al-Sahihah by al-Albani, 1/140-141)
Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith indicates that ma’azif are haram, and ma’azif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments. (al-Majmu’, 11/535).

Islam isn’t decided by your sense brother. The evidence is crystal clear, in multiple authentic sources and the warning is severe. For “entertainment” is the worst excuse too. Say for police to draw a suspect from witness memory, we can argue that is necessity, but for entertainment?! That’s ridiculous to think it’s a valid reason

Our jurisprudence(I am maliki) does not forbid drawings of alive beings.. What you call the evidence is one understanding of of some hadiths.
I will give you just one hint: the word "صورة" in arabic which is mentioned in some hadiths can either mean an image(2D) or a 3D model like a sculpture.
The maliki jurisprudence gave evendenceS that what is haram are 3D models like sculptures and not all images with the exception of dolls or any other forms of kids games.

Today we have arrogant extremists who think they know better than the Imams, that they have the authority to interpret as they see fit. May Allah guide them for arrogance has led them astray.

I just wanted to add to your pinned comment about pictures these two hadiths.
I was with Masriuq in the house which had the portrayals of Mary (hadrat Maryan). Thereupon Masriuq said: These are portraits of Kisra. I said: No, these are of Mary. Masruq said: I heard Abdullah b, Mas'ud as saying Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said: The most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of pictures. (Muslim said): I read this before Nasr b. 'Ali at-Jahdami and he read it before other narrators, the last one being Ibn Sa'id b Abl at Hasan that a person came to Ibn 'Abbas and said: I am the person who paints pictures; give me a religious verdict about them. He (Ibn 'Abbas) said to him: Come near me (still further). He came near him so much so that he placed his hand upon his head and said: I am going to narrate to yor what I heard from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). I heard him say: All the painters who make pictures would be in the fire of Hell. The soul will be breathed in every picture prepared by him and it shall punish him in the Hell, and he (Ibn 'Abbas) said: If you have to do it at all, then paint the pictures of trees and lifeless things; and Nasr b. 'Ali confirmed it.

There are many other ahaadeeth about this topic, and ofc don’t take any hadeeth you like, always see scholars’ rulings because they are more knowledgable.
But I just want to say that I appreciate finally finding an English speaker raising awareness of this topic and how to take rulings in general. I contemplated for many years wether to drop drawing or not. I even unfortunately had an event where I showed off my art and was well known for it where I’m from.
