I agree. She actually knocks one of her diamond earrings off while throwing her fur around, pulls it out of her hair and tosses it to (nominee) Jeremy Irons who was seated in the front row.
The oscars performance is THE iconic performance pf this where Madonna goes full Marilyn Monroe. You guys are always so entertaining and thank you for brightening my day every week with your Abba and Madonna stuff. Love your journey so much x
Her performance of this song at the Oscars has no back up singers, no dancers and no props. It is just Madonna by herself, and somehow it became THE best Oscar performance of all time and held that position in the official list for decades. Currently I believe it is still in the TOP 5. How did she do it??? Well.... you'll have to watch!!!
It’s already been said multiple times in the comments, but it still bears repeating… the Oscars performance of this song is one of the greatest moments in pop history. It’s giving peak Madonna and that really is saying something!
This is one of 3 Stephen Sondheim songs she performed in the film. Sondheim is one of the legends of 20th century musical theater (to Marissa's point about the "performance" aspect of the song) Madonna's character in the film is a nightclub singer named Breathless Mahoney, and she wrote a series of period-style songs inspired by that character, either from her pov or songs that she may have had in her act, for the concept album "I'm Breathless" Def the Oscars performance is the must see. You'll both love it, I promise! Just don't make us wait two damn weeks before you do it!😊
I think you'll like the live version even more. For some reason I thought you already reacted to it, but I guess I was wrong. The whole album is in this style but it's also very eclectic. Uptempos, ballads, novelty songs. Even "Vogue" is on there. It was inspired by the film, which she co-starred as Dick Tracy's object of affection (spoiler: he also a had a fiancé in the film!). It's actually a great movie. It was a big blockbuster hit in 1990. If you want to see her do more in this style, check out her 1993 live performance of "Fever" from Arsenio Hall. She did a house/pop version on her Erotica album and only sang it the traditional jazz way once and it was great. She's also done a few jazz-inspired songs on her tours over the years.
The live Oscar performance of this was a moment in pop culture history. Her date was Michael Jackson, she was dripping in $20M in diamonds and gave a send up of Marilyn Monroe during one of her best live performances and certainly one of her best vocals ever. Oh, and the song won the Oscar. She starred in Dick Tracy.
You guys MUST react to her Oscar performance of this song. It’s one of her best friend performances and the arrangement is way more exciting. It’s a must watch. The song is amazing because it was written by the legend Stephen Sondheim. The entire I’m Breathless album is in this style.
Yes please watch the live Oscar performance. She had many technical issues she said in an interview but you would never know. A true professional and talent. ❤
yes she played Breathless Mahoney in the movie. All this album is jazzy vibes, And once again, watch oscar performance! She send a kiss to a certain Mickael Jackson at the end.
The whole album ‘I’m Breathless’ is a gem. 3 songs directly from the movie and the rest of the tracks inspired by the movie. My personal favourite is ‘Something to Remember’ but they all have their own thing going on. ‘Hanky Panky’ is a blast too….album and live versions equally as good!
madonna played breathless mahoney, a nightclub singer in the movie Dick Tracy....check out her live performance of this song at the Oscars 1991, it will blow your socks off! And she does wear a boa...!
The cover pic is her in character as Breathless Mahoney in the Dick Tracy film. The album was a collection of songs from and inspired by the movie. Just brilliant and so versatile as a performer.
1991 Oscars Performance will blow you guys away. Marissa will enjoy it much more as well. It's one of her best vocal performance ever. And yes, she was in the film. She played Breathless Mahoney. While it may seem, her character serves as a distraction to Dick Tracy, her character plays a key role in the film.
The Oscar performance is incredible. No Boa, but she definitely works a fur piece. Great live vocals too. She co-starred as “Breathless Mahoney” a jazz club singer in the Dick Tracy movie. She also released a studio album called “I’m Breathless” with jazzy songs inspired from the “period” and characters from the movie Dick Tracy. 3 of the songs including this one, were used in the movie.
@@Phippa64 I guess technically a fur scarf is still a boa,, but most people think of boa as feathers. Thanks for taking the time to correct my post though. 🫣
Oscars live and Blonde Ambition performances will satiate you, my dear. Full on audio and video. She played Breathless Mahoney in the movie Dick Tracy and recorded a separate album that was inspired by the movie, which wasn’t the “official soundtrack”. She made an album to coincide with the period the movie was set in. It was received well by critics but wasn’t a huge commercial success because this wasn’t the Madonna fans were accustomed to. The song won an Academy Award for best song in a motion picture and this is your history lesson.
Oh no! The live version at the Oscars 1991 is incredible! You should've reacted to it instead...a while Marylin Monroe vibe. Yes, she was in the movie and had a lot of songs in the soundtrack. This whole album of hers is jazzy + Vogue
vou escrever em português mesmo, tu só pode estar de zoeira né Tyler,? Madonna com uma apresentação maravilhosa no Oscar e tu me coloca só para ouvir o aúdio, fala sério!
Yes Madonna was in the film (as Breathless Mahoney) with Warren Beatty. Gotta see her Oscar performance of this song! You won't be disappointed! It's got all of the visuals you want!
She was Breathless Mahoney!!! The song won an Oscar!!!! OMG!!! I’m DYING 😱 PLEEEEEZ watch her RIGHT NOW WATCH THE LIVE VERSION AT THE FREAKING OSCARS, it is AAAAAMAZING!!! 💙💙👍👍🥰🥰 Zane PS. Pleeeeeeez🙏 PSS LOVE you both!!! 👍😃thank you
A very nice reaction, and I like your takes on the song. She did appear in the movie and in fact, played the lead role among Warren Beatty. The whole album is a throwback vibe I think to 30s and 40s music, except the last song on the album which was Vogue. Even though somehow that song always feels to me it belongs to the album, even it being a dance floor anthem. Sooner or Later and the album as a whole I think took people by surprise, her vocals were so powerful and people didn’t espect that from her. The Oscars performance is one of the best award show performances ever.
Don't know if anyone mentioned this but she started dating Warren Beatty during Dick Tracy and you can see him in the documentary Truth or Dare which was a behind the scenes doc on the making of her Blonde Ambition Tour. He was very self-conscious of being filmed and generally all the hoopla surrounding Madonna and her fame and that played into their break-up. That tour featured Hanky Panky, another little naughty song from that album.
Agree with everyone about the Oscars showstopper, but I personally also enjoy the Blond Ambition performance from Japan. It's a little softer, effortless and cool.
Take the following info as an extension of what you've got going, because apart from being a good part of the related context, places her as a follower, rather than a leader in this style renewal. Not that Madonna was not a leading lady, she definitely was, just not here. It was 1990 when the various artists' Red Hot & Blue compilation, a tribute to Cole Porter to benefit AIDS research and relief, was released. It brought to life and up to times that same oldie swinging jazz style, neither the first time such thing had happened. Throughout the decades it had been noticeably presented at film remakes and also scatteredly included in new ones. "All that Jazz" comes to memory. Even Olivia Newton-John did it alongside ELO at "Xanadu", both in the 70s. At TV shows sometimes appeared to grand effect too, probably every country has had a variety show on telly replaying such. Not for nothing the standards sound book legacy has accumulated a marvelous list of XX century treasures, including the long tradition of musicals. Then at the 80s, it happened at music releases; Alyson Moyet swept the world charts with the amusing "That ole devil thing call Love" (1985) single. That 1990's Red Hot & Blue compilation gathered famous acts of the time (U2, David Byrne, etc), however surprisingly reunited who we now know are some of the greatest voices of all time, doing the Jazz Swing so notably that the cited Dick Tracy's album and Madonna's "Sooner or Later" even at the Oscars, despite being good, cannot touch them. Yes, Sinéad O'Connor on "You Do Something To Me", Annie Lennox with "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye", Lisa Stansfield going "Down In The Depths" and Jody Watley asking "After You" (who?)... Then K.D. Lang (and all musicians and people at this recording) gets to earn all crowns with here rendition of "So In Love", doing it so deep and so high, as to accomplish a very lone peak, hard to come even far to it. One has to switch genres and styles to get at par. It is such good. Once such music was out, it is for us all to dive in, thankfully.
Oscar winning song! The live performance is much better! I would also look up a bit about that pop culture night went Madonna took Michael Jackson to the Oscars.
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🕵 Yes, she was in it! Watch it!!! 🌃 You can't beat the line, "no one I've kissed, babe, *ever* fights me again". Shout out to the late, great Stephen Sondheim. I really love all the songs from the DICK TRACY (1990) soundtrack. My ex and I used to listen to it while we were getting dressed to go out to the clubs. #TylerCreatesContent #TCCReacts #SoonerOrLater
The song sounds like that because it’s from a 30s gangster Flick, Dick Tracy. Love your reviews, but you really should’ve chosen the live performance at the Oscars to review for this song.. 🤷
The Oscars live performance of this is next level brilliance 🙂
YESSS live Oscar performance is a must see absolutely flawless, amazing performance

This song won the Oscar of best original song in 1991, while she gave us the best Academy Awards performance ever ✨
You NEED to see the live version at the Oscars. No one can top that!
Her Oscar live performance in 91 is amazing .Her date was Michael Jackson .
As others have said, you should watch the Academy Awards live version! She makes it much more entertaining. Madonna live is always amazing ❤
The Oscar performance is a MUST!
Madonna was Breathless Mahoney in the film Dick Tracy, and she embodied that character 💯. This song sums up her role so perfectly.
I was so excited at first. Thought it was a reaction to the Oscar performance. Check it out, I know you both will like it!

The live Oscar performance is a total SLAY. This is a Sondheim song and Madonna did star in the movie Dick Tracy as a cabaret singer doing this song.
