Madonna always gives new meaning to her songs in her shows. People were shocked and said it was blasphemous, but most of them didn't even see the show. This is what she said after all the controversy:
"There is a segment in my show where three of my dancers 'confess' or share harrowing experiences from their childhood that they ultimately overcame. My 'confession' follows and takes place on a Crucifix that I ultimately come down from. This is not a mocking of the church. It is no different than a person wearing a Cross or 'Taking Up the Cross' as it says in the Bible. My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing.
My specific intent is to bring attention to the millions of children in Africa who are dying every day, and are living without care, without medicine and without hope. I am asking people to open their hearts and minds to get involved in whatever way they can. The song ends with a quote from the Bible's Book of Matthew: 'For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was sick and you took care of me and God replied, 'Whatever you did for the least of my brothers... you did it to me.'
Please do not pass judgment without seeing my show".

One thing about Madonna is that she's always reinventing her own songs. A new tour means new performances bringing back her old hits with a new meaning, too. So, she worths it. She's the GOAT for a reason. Nobody does like like her.

I went to This concert in Miami. There protesters outside the arena just because of this performance. The meaning of this performance was that, if you notice at the end on the screen she does a countdown of the children that have died in Africa because of HIV and the church isn’t doing anything about it. Whilst she has already open a few hospitals and schools to assist them in Malawi. Her message was “ what are YOU doing to fix it”

Like a Prayer was the video about racism with the burning crosses. The video for Live To Tell was actually just clips from a film. People were definitely upset about this performance because of the cross and NBC even cut the song when they aired the show on TV. Which was really upsetting because it has such an important message. And that's also what's frustrating is the hypocrisy - the same people upset about a cross are the same ones doing nothing about the AIDS epidemic (in the 80s/90s and in the 00s in Africa). Thank god for people like Madonna and the Clintons (and even Bush) who spoke out and put their money with their mouths are. But in addition to the cross having meaning and symbolism, it was also a great way to get people's attention for the message. Agree or disagree with that tactic, Madonna has always done that and it's always worked (see: Like a Prayer).
If you react to one song from different tours, Frozen would be a great one. The S&S version is very cool, but my favorite is Drowned World Tour! You can't skip that one. Sooner or Later is also a great one - the studio version is from Dick Tracy and won an Oscar. I don't necessarily think you have to be familiar with the song to react to that performance.

I wondered how the imagery here would sit for people also. Not in a bad way, but I think it can confront people's sensibilities around religion. I think she's using one of her oldest megahits (in my top 10) to tell a story about violence in the form of neglect here of the most neglected of the world. I think in the original, she's singing about domestic abuse, it plays for other forms of violence too. And then utilizing the imagery of perhaps the most famous figure in the world currently, who also asked us to take care of the most neglected. Madonna is pointing to children in Africa in this performance. For me, this performance of that song, re-awoke it for me and gives me chills each time I see it.

On the Confessions Tour, Madonna sang "Live to Tell" hanging from a mirrored cross, simulating a crucifixion; her outfit consisted of purple pants, a red blouse and a crown of thorns. The screen behind her showed a running tally of the number 12,000,000, and "dire" statistics about children dying of AIDS in Africa.

  • @horrorhusbands2356
    @horrorhusbands2356 9 місяців тому +16

Yes, she used this imagery because Jesus died for all the sins of humanity, so she wanted that juxtaposition of showing that these children are now dying while so many people aren’t taking notice (or not necessarily following the Jesus example). She used a powerful image that she knew would get attention in order to bring attention to an important subject.

Yeah she used this song to highlight and bring awareness to the giant orphan crises because of Aids in the poor African country Malawi. A whole generation of young kids were left orphaned and alone because of Aids wiping out their parents' whole generation. She adopted 4 of her 6 children from orphanages in Malawi and she made an incredible documentary about the humanitarian crises that country is facing in the beautiful and heartfelt documentary I Am Because We Are that she funded and produced. Her organisation Raising Malawi has raised tens of millions of dollars to help the children in that country by building hospitals, paediatric wards, schools, orphanages and care centers etc to help ppl affected by this crises. This performance was very controversial and the religious minions shat their grandma's panties when she came out crucified to a giant discoball cross with a crown of thorns on her head. It's a powerful performance that knocks your breath away and gives you chills.j

This was not received well by some. Madonna on a disco cross. This song was edited out of the television broadcast due to it's "offensive" nature but the message is one of Jesus loving everyone and for us to help these children.

The Bible quote at the end from the book of Matthew “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you did it to me” is essentially saying to treat your neighbors as if they were Jesus. She is asking for support for the children of Malawi during the AIDS epidemic. She adopted 3 children from that country.

Madonna's Confessions Tour took place in 2006, and it was a highly theatrical and controversial concert tour that supported her album "Confessions on a Dance Floor." One of the standout moments of the tour was Madonna's performance of the song "Live to Tell."
During the performance of "Live to Tell," Madonna appeared on a mirror disco ball cross, which was a visually striking and provocative image. Above her, a message was broadcasted, drawing attention to the issues in Africa.
Madonna's intention behind this performance was to use her platform and the attention she garnered to bring focus to the problems faced by the African continent. She didn't want the performance to be seen as a mere publicity stunt but rather as a genuine effort to raise awareness and draw attention to the issues affecting Africa.
By placing herself on a cross-like structure, Madonna aimed to generate controversy and spark discussions about the problems in Africa. The performance was meant to be thought-provoking and serve as a call to action for her audience to pay attention to the issues and contribute to positive change.
It's worth noting that Madonna has often used her music and performances as a means to address social and political issues throughout her career. She has been known for her activism and involvement in various charitable causes, and the Confessions Tour was no exception in terms of her efforts to bring attention to global issues.

Like A Prayer was her music video with an anti-racism, racial harmony theme.
This spectacular performance of Live To Tell was her shedding light on the darkness of ignorance, apathy and indifference, and calling attention to the plight of 12 mil orphans of the then HIV AIDS epidemic that had ravaged Africa.
I saw it as her using Christ’s sacrifice on the cross to remind us of our moral responsibility to be compassionate to those less-fortunate and in need of help.
To back up her support for these orphans, she set up her humanitarian foundation Raising Malawi in 2006 which had funded orphanages, children’s hospitals, schools there. She also adopted 4 orphans from Malawi and raised them lovingly as her family. She has continued to date to visit and support her humanitarian work in Malawi.
She supports and has donated $milllions to more than 33 other worthy humanitarian, rights and charitable organizations worldwide.

The cross for me is the symbol of the idol, is about the hypocrisy to pray and pay attention for idols and not for the real problem in the world, and the message they are following. That so much truth that she was excommunicated because of that!

Please do "Like A Virgin" Blond Ambition Tour (Truth Or Dare Version)! Definitely one of her biggest most iconic performances. Was almost arrested for it!

Perhaps reacting to all of Madonna's live performances of Vogue over the years in chronological order, culminating in Break My Soul (The Queen's Remix) which is an interpolation of Vogue from Beyonce and Madonna.

You need to see the whole segment to understand why there's a gun in there.
The, the organ type of sound is a sample from Giorgio Moroder, a famous DJ, especially in the 70s. This is tour is inspired in retro-disco music from the 70s & 80s

You guys NEED to do Like a Virgin from her Blond Ambition Tour and her Confessions tour. They are completely different from the original song.

    HERE IS AN IDEA:
There is a whole section in the BLONDE AMBITION tour comprised of 5 songs you've already reacted to.
It'd be cool to have you react to that whole section. These 5 back to back performances are:
    1) LIKE A VIRGIN* ( the only one that is a bit racy)
    2) LIKE A PRAYER
    3) LIVE TO TELL
    4) OF FATHER
    5) PAPA DON'T PREACH
Really Really Really hope you take up my suggestion. (Any one reading this, LIKE if you agree please!!)

Now knowing about your religious backgrounds I really appreciate how open you two were to this.
I totally agree, you should probably be familiar with the studio version when reacting to a song live. Love the list so far.
As far as reacting to the same song on different ours is concerned I would also throw "Like a Prayer" from the Sticky & Sweet Tour in the mix. Now that is a totally different but amazing rendition of that song.

Marissa is right- Live to Tell is from a movie. Clips had violence, etc. Like a Prayer was the “racism” themed video.
