    Frank's performances were always incredibly polarizing - the tarred and feathered look really took it up a notch. This song, with industrial percussion courtesy of Einstürzende Neubauten, and it's biting lyrics remain one of the true highlights of the 80's underground music.
    Thanks for providing the higher quality audio - I wish I could find the original video footage to see all the detail. RIP Frank Tovey - like the smearing of tar and feathers, you left a truly indelible mark on music!!

    I wonder if Fad's sound inspired Depeche Mode's shift to "industrial" around the time the released the "Some Great Reward" EP.
    They were both signed by the great Daniel Miller ( Silicon Teens), to Mute Records, in the early 80's. From what I've read they recorded in an small studio and ran on a limited budget. People borrowed each other's instruments and equipment and contributed small, uncredited pieces to other albums that were being recorded.
    It sounded like an extremely intimate situation to say the least lol.

I fell in love with Frank and went to Canada and Toronto. Went into a record store and they had all the music I loved but could not get here. I have all on vinyl and still as pristine as when I got them. Gag, fireside favorites, under the flag and may eps

    How can this sound like Depeche Mode when Collapsing New People was from 1983? I mean, the Mode boys were still very much in the synth-pop thingy. They were only getting into Get The Balance Right and Love In Itself, and only just detecting industrial ingredients. If I remember correctly, DM was even support-act of Fad Gadget at the time.....only righteous at that moment. Let's try not to compare to DM too much, okay?

    • @jannabalthaser
      @jannabalthaser 7 років тому +3

      Yes, that's exactly where the song was inspired. From Wikipedia: "During the recording of Gag the German industrial band, Einstürzende Neubauten, were recording for Some Bizzare Records at Hansa and had been the support act for Fad Gadget at a gig at "The Loft" venue in Berlin. Frank liked their use of Industrial equipment and found objects, something he had encouraged Nick Cash (his drummer and percussionist since his first album) to do. Frank Tovey heard a large printing press nearby which had a distinctive rhythm and got Gareth Jones the co-producer/engineer to record it, this was looped and became the basis for "Collapsing New People."

    The "it" look at the time was the "Hiroshama" look inspired by the cult of the Japanese desingers of the 80's. Slicked back hair, with the front hair tweaked high. The clothes would be Comme des garcons, or Y. Yamoto inspired. Pencil thin long almost floor length skiirts with off the shoulder blouses.
