The thing that angered me a lot from reading comment sections on international news about our local fires (I live in Ventura County) is that they just assume every one is rich. They don’t realize that many people moved into the area way before the prices where so high. There is also a lot of people that lost jobs in working in those big houses. My cousins boyfriend was allowed to keep his gardening equipment at one of the houses he worked at and everything he had burned with the house. My cousin lost three houses she cleaned. This doesn’t just affect the rich people in the huge pretty houses it affects their employees too.

I am from Paradise, CA. The town completely destroyed by the Camp Fire in a matter of mere hours. It's been incredibly difficult to come to terms with that everything we have ever known is gone. My grandmother's home that's been in the family for generations: gone. My aunt's home of 20+ years: gone. I watched as the devastation of my town and it's people was turned into jokes and political bullshit and I became increasingly bitter. I also saw the people of Paradise, Magalia and the surrounding areas pull together to help one another in such a way that I've never felt more of a connection to them all.
I urge you all not to forget about the fires after the news stops coming out about them. It's so easy to move on, like the video stated. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and consider donating.

I understand your loss completely and your frustration. I didn't lose my home or home town to a fire but we lost it to a hurricane. The whole Parish was wiped out. But no one ever talked about it because they were too busy talking about a different hurricane. It went unnoticed and so many people weren't able to restart because no one cared. It was truly heartbreaking.

@@elijahjohnson8921 it's not that there is an absence of sympathy for certain classes, but as the video itself points out, other people may have more resources to deal with the situation. Maybe other people haven't been rendered effectively homeless. Maybe they have very good insurance which pays for them to stay somewhere or make bill payments until they are back on their feet. The loss of life, health or irreplaceable momentos is hard for all, but losing your home and being left with extremely limited options is yet another added difficult to a tragic situation.

Being from Northern California, it's upsetting to see such little discussion and coverage of the camp fire. Just feels like the devastation here is and was overshadowed by celebrities with multiple homes who could completely afford to rebuild.

This was a nice change of pace for your channel. I encourage you to do some coverage of the Camp Fire, past the politics. The individual impact on people in both the Woolsey and Camp fire are arguable the same for those who lost everything and my heart goes out to everyone effected. That said the enormity of loss experienced from the Camp fire is no where near comparable and by far so incredibly devastating it's hard to even comprehend w/o seeing it. Towns were destroyed, not just homes. They still haven't found everyone who has been reported missing, insurance companies are going bankrupt from the impact. Surrounding towns have been inundated with 30K evacuees causing major traffic incidents and crime increase. Entire utility companies have been 100% compromised and lawsuits pending against PG&E for negligence up here could likely lead to bankruptcy. It wasn't just a fire in the woods--it was total inhalation for part of northern California. Then to add to the disaster parts of the valley floor where evacuees had fled too experienced major flooding days later. So thank you for this video but again, please consider doing the same for the Camp Fire. Here are the numbers from Cal Fire: Camp Fire - 153,336 acres, 18,793 structures burned--14K of which were homes and there were 88 fatalities. The Woolsey fire stands at 96,949 acres, 1,500 structures burned, 600 of which were homes and there were 3 fatalities.

Some people just want to get by, if you're running a business you merely want to have enough to pay what you owe and make enough to better your company and do better than you would if you didn't own your own business.. If that means putting money back for when disasters happen or raising rates so that those affected can get their homes rebuilt is just a couple ideas on how to get the money, they don't have to make hundreds of millions that goes into the pockets of the big wigs, they choose to. And instead of those big wigs not getting their fat checks, most insurance companies would rather fight low income families so they don't have to do what they're contractually obligated to so yeah most businesses are there to screw you but they don't have to be, they would rather keep their wallets fat and let people be homeless who paid for a service and then will get swindled out of said service..

Welcome To The Madness even then. After my house burned down in a fire, the construction company that most people hired to rebuild scammed people. FEMA (this was in 2003) said the car we had that blew up and that the FEMA rep literally could not tell had been a car had “insufficient damage” and would not compensate us. The price and availability for the few rental homes available in our neighborhood skyrocketed and people were not able to be near their work or school. Once we were finally able to rebuild, people in the neighborhood would complain about how they wish their houses had burned down because then they could have a nice, new, rebuilt house (yes, really). Never mind irreplaceable items like family heirlooms and photos (less of a problem now with things like google drive and iCloud, but still) which were just gone forever.
Obviously it’s easier with financial stability and success, but it sucks no matter what.

If I may make a tiny criticism though, the jump between Iris and lady from the insurance institute felt pretty disjointed in terms of tone. It was a pretty stiff juxtaposition between Iris’ somber tone to Janet’s upbeat upbeat matter of fact tone. I just don’t understand how this skipped his mind. I’m sorry that the Woolsey Fire occurred, but the CampfFirewas still out of control while the Woolsey Fire was under control and on the way to being out. I can't speak for all of the dislikes, but it looks like a lot of comments are about how this video (and in essence, the crew) only talks about and cares about this one fire, when at the same time as this fire was happening, us up in Northern California had the Camp fire in Paradise, and that was so much bigger, so much more devastating, and had so much more life lost (in vegetation, wild life and humans). And we dealt with after affects of the fire for quit some time as well, air quality wise alone. I can't speak for personal experience about the fire in SoCal, since I'm not from there and didn't visit during the time of the fire or after, but we had immediate poor air quality 150 miles away from paradise, where I live in the SF Bay Area, the day the Camp fire started, not even speaking about living closer to it. But from the news, it looked like if someone's house wasn't in the vicinity of the evac notice, they weren't really affected by it that much. But that's just what the news showed and what I observed watching youtubers who live down there

Society decides who is paid more. As a whole, America has decided sports players deserve more money than firefighters because the provide a more valuable service. That and they actually make big corporations money. Firefighters don't exactly help this country's bottom line. That's capitalism for ya.

It's not because society it's the market and so other variables, first there are way more people that can be a Firefighter that people that are top notch athletes both of them are in high demand, but the number of possible firefighters its way way way higher than the possible Ronaldo, Messi, Brady, Barry Bonds etc, so because that the players are paid a lot because the teams want to have that talent.
The Second point it's that an athlete it's paid mostly by a private company (The Team) so they can pay whatever the want to the players, the Firefighter are publicly funded so you just can pay them some amount to make theme viable.
And the Third and final point that is based on the second, imagine that you paid a Firefighter the same salary a Month that a Top Notch Athlete, yes a lot of people would apply, but just only win California there is at least 12000 firefight imagine need to paid than 3 million dollar a month to those 12000 the funds are going to disappear in less that a fucking yearso it's not feasible to do that.

@@Ms666slayer But it IS feasible to use government funds to pay for multi-million dollar stadiums. To give giant billion dollar corporations million dollar tax breaks. Because... Trickle down theory works (obviously). Come on, it IS a society issue. America does not value teachers, police officers, or firemen. They are seen as disposable and replaceable. They are not valued employees of this country. Same with veterans. This country is very good at paying lip service without any actual follow through. The government values the private sector and will bend over backwards to make sure they are happy and all their needs met. Not so much firemen. Look up how Republicans (and some Democrats) tried to just let a bill die that was supposed to provide relief to first responders of 9/11 who were suffering severe health issues due being inadequately equipped as the full scope of the damage had yet to be understood. Firefighters, as whole, don't make political contributions on the same scale as private corporations. Thus the politicians deciding whether to offer better health care to them, or build a new stadium, will always go with the Stadium.
And you're right, why make being a firefighter a profession that's desirable to people? Then they might only be in it for the money, and it will be competitive and only the best will be allowed. And that would be... Bad?

Thank you for doing this story. Redding CA is my home town, much of my family still live there.
I’ve lived in Sonoma County for the past 18 years and to see first the Valley Fire, then the Tubbs Fire rip through my city of Santa Rosa was so scary. My friends lost their homes and pets only making it out of their homes with their children and still in pajamas, evacuating my own kid and dogs while feeling the heat of the fire and the fear that gripes you is hard to convey if you haven’t seen a wall of fire coming down the mountain into your community.
These past few years have been hard for California but it’s the only home I’ve ever known.

Really appreciated this story. Whilst horrible and saddening, I really appreciated the depth of the story and how you had your people go out and do a piece of something affecting your local. I'm from Australia, and like California, fires devistate our country year after year. While our north floods with cyclones every summer, our south (Victoria, where I am from) we get fire warnings nearly every day during summer. The yellow haze in the air and the smell of burnt wood is always present, but I've never lost our home. I can't begin to imagine this woman's Pain.
