Thank you for this, it’s exactly the set up I’m needing for a used tank I just bought skimming off the left side came with a 15 galling sump. I’m going to do exactly this way.. thank you for uploading
I really dig this build. I have only ever used standard hang on back and canister filters and have always wanted to put together a sump system. Very interesting setup with that overflow box. I think one of the benefits of having such a large sump is that if you lost power and the tank drained into the sump down to the lowest part of the overflow box inlet then you're nowhere near in any danger of overflowing the sump. So that adds a little extra bit of peace of mind.
I’m diggin the new setup! Looks great! And don’t believe what everyone says about electric blue jack dempsey’s, they are easy to keep. I had one for years and no issues. He was beautiful fully grown too. 👍
Nice DIY project. I'm in the process of doing the same 20galn feeder for my 75,. Sure it may be small but it will still do more than the canister I have now. Nothing wrong with my canister, just it only holds 2, maybe 3 gallons of water compared to what the 20galn sump will hold and do.. I'm only doing this sump to establish better and more clearer water with less water changes per month. Water changes can get to you after a bit. I recently switched from saltwater to freshwater. I'll save alot now not having to spend $65 every month for a 5galn pal of instant salt. But hey , I had a blue Bolivian ram. Bright blue colors,. If you BLACKOUT your back and sides he'll stop doing that. Males are territorial and his image is telling him there's another in his area.
Not sure how to answer that. I filled it up to where I thought it was enough then started the pump. Then I removed or added water to where it was the right level.
I've built same setup but the drain from tank side and mechanical media is full there isn't like a water fall like yours. The return side is low on water and I cant fill it up anymore. What am I doing wrong?
@@jdofishtank6018 just wondering because these HOB overflows seem to have an issue with breaking siphon either during operation or power failure. I am trying to figure out how to set mine up for a sump in saltwater tank 🤔.
@@dannycastaneda1974 look into toms lifter pump. Make a sealed connection at the very top point of the syphon tude. The pump will ensure air is always removed protecting your syphon. The pump will pump air and water. Send the otput back into the tank. Hob overflow insurance.
Looks great! Happy you overcame some of your recent trials. How was priming the sump? I too have been experiencing the trials of DIY sump making. Tonight I pumped about 20 gallons of water onto my floor (thank goodness it was in the basement) while evaluating if the overflow would move enough water to the sump, keeping up with the pump flow rate and preventing the pump draining the sump dry and flooding my tank and floors. LOL - Opps - back to the drawing board, looks like I need to increase from 1” to 2” lines for the overflow and place a ball valve on return (into tank) hose to decrease the gph flow rate back into the tank. Good luck with your Electric Blue Dempsey! From my own experience, you may want to consider other cichlids (American or African) as tank companions. I housed a Jack Dempsey, Electric Blue Dempsey, alligator gar and an Red Oscar together in a 55 gallon many years ago. It was fun watching them develop together. They started out eating flake food, and then they grew up quick, each sucking up literally 5 goldfish into their mouth before I knew it. Peace
That's what I came to UA-cam for lol I have 2 55 gallon tanks, one I'm going to use for growing out of fish and the other as a sump tank. So I was looking for the right ratio of water in each tank to make sure I don't get this same problem, I live upstairs, and my downstairs neighbors would not be too happy about that lol
Heres a smooth tip to avoid floods. I run my pump from the sump into a smaller sump or grow bed above my tank. So if the pump does fail the water being sucked into the sump will be from a smaller reservoir
I have a DIY overflow on my 135 now that all PVC. It's been up and running for over a year without a hitch. I have been kicking around some ideas for converting it to an overflow box type setup and this is pretty close to what I had in mind. I have one question for you. Is the box on the outside of the tank mandatory? My initial thought was to siphon out of the box inside the tank directly into the sump. Any thoughts? P.S. you ever have issues with the heater being in the first chamber when the water gets too low?
You can change the overflow to a "Herbie" or "Bean animal" type overflow that creates a syphon, and they are almost silent. I have 2 pumps in my 30 gal sump, one 500gph and one 750 gal with a lot of flow.
With this huge amount of biomedia (with some biohome ultimate) ratio /fish, are you able to obtain a full cycle who consume the nitrates with less needs for water changes?

I love how he says "I've had him since Monday" when explaining how long he's had the dempsey, as if that's going to do us any good lol. Very cool sump though. I truly believe that a tank can never be overfiltered, and the aeration this provides is definitely 10 times more effective than an airstone or HOB. It also adds plenty of water flow to the tank which many fish enjoy and that some fish kind of need to thrive. Why the hate for the rasboras though?? They are some of my favorite fish and an incredible addition to most freshwater tanks. There are plenty of other species of fish you could have put in the tank to keep the dempsey company that could've worked as a permanent addition to the tank. This is like being in prison and having to watch your executioner from the day he was born to the day he's old enough to kill you.

NOW ! ! I know everything about a sump ! ! ! Only kind of new bits but not the whole story. Excellant tri of vids. Subbed. x
Huge sump for such small stock but works very well. Awesome job sir
how did you start the syphon for overflow though?
The water pressure automatically does it
And the height and the location of your overflow

Wrap happens when there's a power outage. Will the over flow stop and pump will continue to fill when power goes back on.
You can use both pumps. Add filter socks to your intake chamber. You won’t hear anything. And a ball valve to control the flow.
Bro I love it. I want to make a sump plus that hung over part you made!! If you’re making more I will buy 1.
Are you able to use that same setup for an aquaponics system ?
The more over kill filtration the better biolodgical matter for your fish ! Awesome mate!

Thanks
I really like this tank setup and I love that substrate what kind of gravel is that I really want it
Pretty cool sump, tank should be well filtered

How do you match the flow rate of the siphon with the flow rate of the pump?
Thanks for this video. How much water did you add to the sump for the first time before before starting the return pump?
Not sure how to answer that. I filled it up to where I thought it was enough then started the pump. Then I removed or added water to where it was the right level.
How do you get the return pump to pump back at the same rate as the siphon?

how does the overflow box perform during power outage test? do you turn the pump off during feeding?
Zhar Family I don’t turn off the sump during feeding, and yes I’ve tested a power outage, it all works great, sump doesn’t overflow.
