I haven’t been bumping Mr morale and the big steppers either that much lately. I believe the main problem is that we have so much access to a lot more music than previous generations. New music releases every week plus we have access to music from the previous generations as well, so in a way we’re constantly finding new music and don’t have the time to go back to one album constantly unless we’ve developed some type of connection to it.

Had the same thing but for a different reason. It's just such a god damn heavy album that I really needed to be in the right headspace to listen to it and needed to have the time to actually sit down and listen to it the whole way through. So the gap between my first listen and second listen was almost a month. I kept wanting to revisit it but not getting the chance. I will say though, when I did I really fcked with it. So I'm looking forward to the next time I'm in the right zone to listen. But its not like ggmc or tpab coz I feel like I can listen to them in more everyday situations.

It was purposeful because there were a few other albums I was entertaining and didn’t want to lose the feelings of those either. I’ll probably listen to it again some more but in a way I guess you can say I took a break. I actually find mr morale to be the most listenable Kendrick album in everyday situations because it’s the easiest to digest because of how straightforward it is.

This isn't specific to this era of music. In every generation there's albums that literally NOBODY talks about anymore, and even when they came out the buzz wasn't around for long.
The reason why this era "feels" different is because there are SO many albums and SO many artists that people move through music very quickly. They'll play an album 1-3 times, add whatever songs they liked the most to a playlist, then move on with their lives.

Yep this the comment is on point. And the memorable albums birth "legendary artiste" example: Michael Jackson, Whitney Housten etc.
This happens in every era. That's why Drake, Chris brown, Beyonce, Kanye etc. can ssay they've been here etc. and other artiste "fell off". The artistes' that fell off had forgettable albums/stop making music.

    • @ahkenaten522

I think some people don’t realize this, but back in the day people would have the chance to marinate with one or two albums for months at a time. Now we have social media and music is released damn near every week now by the time an artist releases an album it’s another one released the week after and the fact that most of these dudes sound the same doesn’t help either.

    • @egotrips4810

I feel digesting an album is what creates the memorable feeling. If you blaze through 5+ albums EACH week, and never look back due to new albums you're listening, it'll never fully digest and just linger in your mind as that 'decent' album. When it could've been a great album but never grew on you. There've been great albums I thought were 'meh' at first which grew on me & now they reside in my head as near masterpieces.

Great segment with alot of excellent points. I totally agree with everything you guys said.
I think as the world progresses, we find an era of abundance, thanks to technology. The music industry and labels have been evolving rapidly in recent years. The algorithms of music production have replaced the conventional way of recording by bringing better efficiency and as data analysis is one of the major keys for creating killer-hits, every rapper with the right label can now make a catchy track to maximize streams and profits - which in turn also creates more competition (more rappers, more albums). Thanks to social media platforms, there are new artists popping up every day too, and soon there will be thirty album drops every day.

Of it but I believe it’s because the average consumer has change everyone has seen how easy it is to get on the big screen and knows what it takes to get there with a actionable plan or in some way shape or form are trying to start a business of some sort, (podcast, day trading, trade lines, CPNs,rapper IG influencer the list goes on/
what I’m really trying to say is everyone’s to busy trying to get in to that spot of the star or level up to that kind of level.
they are to busy and focus on making it to worry about what album is out or what’s going on in the music world really just a whole lot of seat changing , I feel this is the fault of the music industry making just about anyone famous and taking the mystique away from celebrity and Covid shut downs give us time to think about things and put it in to prospective….

Why all the blame on us? The artists are somewhat to blame as they're getting lazier. If you make good music, people will flock. But they're down to 2 verses (laziness), using others for hooks (laziness), shoving too many fillers in a track list to accumulate plays (laziness). The newer artists are so consumed in social media and having their heads filled with adoration/trying to forge a social media personality that they spend less time writing/in the studio. FACTS.

New artists have to focus on social media because majority of people will never listen to someone music unless they see them on akademiks or shade room or those type of social media pages.
We dont live in an era where you can just discover one new rapper every few months and spend time learning there music and becoming a fan. Nowadays because of the rise of social media you discover so many artists in just a day on tiktok or instagram memes.
Also streams are worth so much less than what albums were worth back in the day. Back in the day you could actually spend 2 years working on an album coz your last album made you enough money to pay your bills and buy food for the next 2 years without having to be in the public eye or make momey for social media. Nowadays if you take too long to release in the streaming era, it will make it very difficult to maintain your bills, security, house in a safe ever etc etc

But i feel like the big reason so many albums fall off is because of the quantity of music releasing constantly. I am glad you brought up the Big Stepper album. He recently played at a venue in my city and the show was amazing. Him and 2 Phone BK have been in my rotation for a while. Even before they told the public they were related.
When you have a K-Dot album that takes on a lot of topics, everyone can find a song that is relevant to them. During the show, he also played his top bangers like B*tch Dont Kill My Vibes, Humble, and alot more. Its nice having an artsit that has a diverse catalog. When relistening his old songs before the show, I kinda forgot about untitled unmastered. Go listen to that right now.
One artist that is keeping up with fans demands and still having enough songs to remember an album's worth is YB. He releases so much that you will have on rotation enough songs to be more than other artsit's catalogs. Yak is right behind him since he was on the Mr Morale album too. However it is more about singles tho ngl...

facts. The whole mysterious vibe of artists is gone due to socials. I think more artists should maintain their mysteriousness as that’s what people flock to. Take pinkpantheresses fame for a while, everyone wanted to know who she was but she wouldn’t show anything about herself, not even a full picture of herself, and at that time her music was worldwide and a big hype. As soon as she was signed and became ‘mainstream’, aswell as sharing things about herself and making more commercial music, her popularity sort of went down. Celebs that are mysterious always get the most traction.

Here's my take. A lot of these artists and projects do not have anything new to offer. The reason why the Kendrick and Denzel album, at least for me, are still being played and mentioned is because they feel fresh, unique and important to their respective artist. Let's be honest, when Drake or Future drop, we aren't looking to catch up with them. We know we're getting a few bops for our playlists and we call it a day. It isn't that deep. It's basically Halloween with most of the music today; we get our treats and wait until next time. I think every era of music has been like that. However, for me, it seems like there is so much more forgettable music as time progresses. I fear listening to new music and artists because I don't want to waste my time. I'm taking a break from music for a while, because there is nothing that can capture me enough. Kendrick's album is the most recent project that has me playing it over and over again.

Kendrick, Denzel, Joey, Lupe, and Pusha T will last with me forever personally cause I have stuck with their music for a long time and it's hard to ignore all of their work. I haven't really checked out any new artist these days so nothing seems forgettable to me this year but maybe it's forgettable to other people who listen to a large majority of artist because a large majority of hiphop artist especially these days don't make albums, they're making hype songs and slapping them all together and calling it an album which will not stick with the people compared to a well-thought out conceptual album that can relate and connect with others and eventually the hype will die down for the next artist to come and be the next trend.

I actually think I Never Liked You was a fantastic Future album and its one of my most played albums of the year just because it has so many great songs. Wanted to highlight it cus I know I disagree pretty hard with y’all on that. 712PM, Keep It Burnin, Puffin On Zootiez, Gold Stacks, Wait For U, Love You Better, Chickens, Holy Ghost, The Way Things Going, I’m On One, No Security, and Just The Beginning are all heavily in my rotation and I still play the other songs from INLY every once in a while. There’s a reason why this Future album has been topping the charts since it came out and doing so well on sales, it’s really getting played consistently and hasn’t just come and gone just based on sales and talk.

Main problem is that current day rappers don't even really rap and they just put lines together while using engineering/autotune to fill in the gap. No story and no bars. Back in the day you can play an album from the 1st to the last track and each one would be a banger with a story to tell.

The 3 albums I listen to still on a regular basis are "No Dope On Sundays" by Cyhi The Prince, "Victory Lap" by Nipsey Hussle and "For The Love Of Money" by Eshon Burgundy and all of those albums are a few years old.
I think its because those albums are all complete bodies of work. Strong instrumentation, clever skits, transitions, lyrical content and all are mixed & mastered beautifully.
The other caveat is there are very few skips on those albums. You can pretty much press play and let them ride out.
To me, albums with those qualities will stand the test of time.

The last golden age of music was between 2010-2014. Think of how many hits we had during this era and how diverse the chart toppers were. Today it's all Rap dominated but back then you had superstars in every genre. This period also birthed so many Legends. Drake, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Wiz Khalifa, Keisha. And so many more. They all went on to achieve astronomical success in the mainstream. There aren't too many artists these days with that level of star power. I think it would be interesting if you guys did some sort of post release (like say 6 months after release) reviews of albums you like that have stuck with you. Because this would help people revisit these albums and I think there is something to be said for revisiting and discussing an album after it's initial release. This would make more sense for the deeper albums, but I feel like these are the ones that stick anyway. For example it would be interesting to hear a revisited discussion of Mr Morale 6 months in once you've had a chance to digest it. I reckon this might be a good way of encouraging people to revisit albums more, and would also make for some interesting content.

If we’re being honest, It’s because of social media. Everything right now is a big push for 1 big single to be endlessly played on a tiktok or reel. Me personally, I love albums. There’s nothing worse than hearing a good single just to go to the artist’s catalog and the rest of their songs aren’t up to par. But like we can all agree on, the short attention span doesn’t help. The new thing might be multiple short albums released throughout the year that are about 30min long so that an artist can show their talent, while still having bangers in a short and sweet package. There are ‘entertainers’ and there are ‘artists’. The first group are singers or rappers that entertain us. The musical flavor of the week or month. It’s forgettable sounds and phrases that have little meaning to most hearers. Artists on the other have a profound effect on most listeners. People gain more understanding and shades of meaning with each listen, because it’s art not disposable entertainment. This is why people will listen to the white album, the Wall, Marvin Gaye’s What’s going on generations after they have been released. It doesn’t matter the style of music. What matters is the meaning of the message within the sounds created. Are their universal themes presented in significant and creative ways or a cheap cash grab through a method designed to make money not lasting music.

Earl, MMESYF Denzel, Drill music in zion Lupe Fiasco, Trip Yung Lean, Ramona Parks Vince, Mr Moral. There's bare more and Fka twigs isn't really a hip hop artist but she has used rappers in her music to craft beautiful pieces of art. Simple. No traditional play cycle. There’s no scattered feature record model or TV/radio chart shows to keep album feeling current and in the conversation. Now the album just drops, it’s hot for a few days and then the buzz dies.
It’s like when Netflix drops a whole season of a show vs when Disney drops a show week by week. After everyone binges the whole Netflix show on the opening weekend, that’s it, there’s no more buzz. When Disney drops a show it stays in the conversation longer because everyone collectively talks about it while waiting for the next episode to drop. One weekend of buzz vs 2 months of buzz.

When i say “Drake’s brand” im talking about an aesthetic, a style or approach to songs/songwriting, multimedia artwork, commercial accessibility/appeal, charisma and personality etc. the overall package of an entertainer. Prince’s brand included him being a live instrumentalist, a dancer, a singer, a director, an extremely stimulating aesthetic, an extremely unique songwriting approach and sonic signature…
J Cole’s brand is just a guy in a hoodie, rapping over boom-trap…in a post Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Drake world…u need more than a hoodie, struggle raps and a mic to be interesting. This isnt that elusive of a concept…

Most albums lose momentum because the marketing strategy is antiquated.
Artists should think like UA-camrs and produce a weekly show like: behind the scenes making the music, podcast, vlog style. Then produce 7-10 song albums to keep fan’s attention.
Russ is an example of how to drop content and albums that your fans love. His weekly music is “content” like UA-camrs weekly videos. Too many rappers don’t have a strategy outside of longer albums and playlists.

Damn, the last statistic you guys mentioned actually saddened me a lot, and actually confirmed the feeling I had for a longer time now. Hip Hop is beginning to be less and less mainstream and is kinda going the Rock route. I think people are kinda fed up with the constant dumbed down sound of current mainstream Rap. People gravitate more towards 80s style songs now, or modern songs who are stylized to sound like 80s songs. I always said Rap/Trap had it's peak in 2015-2017. Right when Da Baby came a long, Hip Hop was on a downward spiral, because all those cookie cutter beats get really tiring pretty fast.
Lets see where Hip Hop is heading, but it's not looking good for Hip Hop mainstream wise

Constant releases and shortened attention spans are the main reasons. Some amazing albums have dropped during the last few years but we're just constantly waiting on the next big drop and so it goes. It feels like only the hardcore fans appreciate the good stuff.

I think all this proves is that music with real substance, inspiration and passion are staying in the rotation. Microwave music is here and gone. They might make a big first week sales but then after that I’m sure it’s declining and more substance filled music might not have huge first week sales but I bet over time they are on a incline of sales.

This is kinda false. An album like DS2 and 7220 dominate well into their 3rd and 4th week and consistently stay on charts. Meanwhile, it’s only been 2or 3 months(?) and MBTBS is getting outsold by CLB and a bunch of other albums which were released quite a while before.

I'm a dinosaur still listening to full albums. When I hear a hot single I check to see if the album is any good. I try not to skim, if I'm skimming an album I either give up on it or come back later. Needless to say I don't get through many albums in a year. I usually latch on to like 3-5 albums. I haven't gotten around to most of the albums he listed at the top.

man no way u just listed the most mellow songs off the album and said “trap” (i remember ant saying that first 12 sings of ds4 are elite trap but that’s like a HALF of that album)
9 songs are still in my rotation and it’s like the absolute best. ofc its all subjective but denying that 99% of trap is just HORRIBLE and very generic is impossible
last actually good year for it was 19 when we got PEFMBA and So Much Fun
its really hard to gravitate towards trap nowadays bc its just SO repetitive
