How to Fix Central Door Lock Motors - Freelander 1 and other cars

  • Central Locking not working? A very common fault on old cars. Here we show how to fix both the front and rear door lock motors on a Landrover Freelander 1. The recommended route is to change the brush section of the worn motor for a compatible one from a new motor which can be bought very cheaply for around £1 on ebay. A couple of alternative methods are shown for dismantling and fixing. Most of the video is on fixing the front door lock with a smaller section at the end on the rear door lock, which is a bit easier, but uses the same technique for fixing the electric motors, so that bit is not duplicated. It looks more daunting than it is. With new brushes it should last as long as a new one. I wouldn’t recommend second hand locks as they will probably also have worn motor brush. New locks are around £90 so not cheap.
    Here are the new electric motors that I bought. I just used the ends of these motors containing the brushes to save the hassle of trying to remove and refit the gear on each motor and to get the right shaft length:

      Finally had a go, removed the rear right lock, replaced the rear part of the motor that wasn't working, all seemed fine until I re-inserted it, when I unlock the car, it locks, when I lock the car, it unlocks, it's got me stumped. It' not possible to reverse the polarity, is it? Any clues to where I went wrong?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  4 роки тому

      @@davidspikings2723 That may be because you have accidentally rotated the body of the electric motor with respect to the brush end, perhaps. The north and south magnets are then swapped and it rotates in the opposite direction. If you don't want to swap it back mechanically you could just swap the wires to it.

    Great video, I could never imagine the trouble those cheap small motors are guilty of such hardwork. I should say, Land Rover for the price they ask for these parts they should have used proper buhler motors that last forever

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  2 роки тому

      I expect the parts are common over many manufacturers and made by bosch or the like. I generally find Landrover parts quite cheap compared to others like bmw, audi etc.

    Thank you very much for the video. Got an issue with my freelander 1 change the door lock , works fin when not connected, when i connect the wire, on "unlock position" the door is closing with the key button but not opening either with the button or the handle, when its on lock position closing with key button unlock with button from the outside but couldnt open it from the inside do you have an idea where it might come ?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Рік тому +1

      When the lock does the opposite of what is expected after the motors have been dismantled, it is usually caused by the brush end of the motor being installed 180 degrees rotated compared to the body part holding the magnets.

      Or a Haynes manual or rover workshop manual. Check for any diagnostic codes via a scanner. Next check you are getting a spark, that you have fuel pressure and that injectors are firing.

    I have to do this on my Freelander, not because the door lock doesn't work, but to replace the actual key cylinder which is completely knackered ... Worse even than the old Mk1 Mini locks which were notorious for being able to be opened with a screwdriver to twist the lock as the cylinder became so worn the tumblers did nothing!!
    When one sees the clunky cumbersome way this has been constructed one has to wonder what kind of pervert designed it in the first place and WHY production engineering didn't complain about the farcical nature of the assembly, instead of a straight forward process enabled by decent access holes!
    Score 0 out of 10 for one of THE WORST pieces of design I have ever seen in my life!!

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Рік тому

      This video does not cover dismantling of the keylock part that is separate in case anyone wondered, I just show it being reinserted. The keylock part is the same you get on most cars of this era and they don’t normally wear out as most people use the remote fob for lock/unlock. It seems like yours has been well used or abused. If just well used any wear is very dependant on key hole lubrication, which should be done at a service, but most garages don’t bother. Yes, access is a bit tricky but is all down to technique. You just have to think “how did they assemble this?”. They will have had a method to try and save time, because time is money, but there are constraints of strength and safety of the door structure. It’s not an unusually bad or good design in my experience and humble opinion. Good luck with your job.
