    Setting aside the PS1's loading times...
    -PS1 port looked like it used darker color shading for rendering the stages, while N64 amped up the brightness. A subtle detail I noticed in the Wind World stage was that the rain coming down actually made contact with the ground for the PS1 port, something lacking on N64.
    -N64 intro sequence and endings were rendered in real-time (done for the arcade version), while PS1 rendered them in a CG video clip.
    Pretty close ports, though would probably give the slight nod to the N64 for no load times.

      @@Clay3613 I thought about this too, but at the time it was what it was. PSX made a standard with its more universal controller, but if you were a 64 user: it was the norm.

    Mortal Kombat 4 on the N64 was the closets thing to the arcade version before the Dreamcast Gold version came out. MAME was also out of the question back then since the game took a long time to get it emulated.

    1. I would prefer the PS1 control scheme over the N64's.
    2. The N64's colors looked a lot brighter. Also the stage where the Scorpion and Shinnok fights took place had better looking background fire. The PS1 versions fire looked pixelated.
    3. Those ending cutscenes were hilarious. 13:48 Sub Zero is so angry in the N64 version he's yelling at the wall. 13:56 Quan Chi is moving arms around erratically to prove his point in the N64 version. 14:08 YEEEEARRRRRH!!! in the Ps1 version.

    I generally like the PlayStation version better for its full motion videos & being able to collect all the endings, but I will say that Nintendo 64 has the advantage when it comes to load times & being able to do Goro vs Goro matches (Goro is replaced by Shinnok in the PlayStation version, so you fight him twice).
    Also, I feel like the music choices for the main menu, title screen & even tournament mode screens were better in the PlayStation version, but that's just my opinion.

    Kinda shocked at how similar they both look given each system's strengths and weaknesses. I would have expected the textures in N64 to look much worse. I also would have thought that the 3D models and animations would look smoother on the N64 given its ability to render more polygons. I also think they could have rendered the intro on the N64 a lot closer to the FMV/arcade.
    But as usual, when you port the same game for multiple systems, a lot of times they go for what will get the game out quicker than what will play to each system's strengths.

      N64 doesn't render more polygons, on the contrary, but it has an advantage it supports main models with a higher average of polygons than the ps1 maybe due the cpu but in stages they are less since the N64 makes bigger polygons, besides the frame rate is almost always below the fixed 30fps, so multiplying the polygons by the fps the result in drawn polygons will be lower than the PS1.

Both have the mo cap video endings, just different tech were uses on PSX where the N64 used the same as arcade.

    The 64 had better character models and no loading. It was a tad brighter but that's an easy fix depending on your preference. The only thing the PS had were the rendered videos, but the 64 was closer to the arcade by using the in game models. 64 for the win here. But the Dreamcast takes the win overall with much better character models than both the PS and 64 with the FMV cut scenes and added content.

The FMVs on ps1 aren't that much of an improvement really. They are still as cheesy and embarassing as anywhere else. Actually, the hilariously bad in-engine ones on the n64 are even more funny if that's your cup of tea :)
    The n64 controller isn't bad at all for this game. You just have to reconfigure the default layout. The C buttons layout is a good substitute for ps1 X, O and so on. So use that for attacks. Set R for block and L for run and you are good to go.

But it was a success at the arcades, because it was so fast and modern for that time, despiting the fact that 3D graphics were at a very early stage. I still can perform "MAXIMUM DAMAGE" combos with Sob-Zero and Scorpion, btw... Ah, And I like both versions, but look for Zeus hardware MK4 in MAME.

    As an MK fan since MK 1 and someone whos played MK games competitively i can safely say the N64 is better overall.
    The PSX version freezes at times and has happened during fatalities its annoying, glitches at times and the N64 looks better since the game is 3D and loads way faster. No load times on n64 was just like the arcade since thry used real time tech. PSX used something else.
    The one thing PSX does better was the arcade intro promo ad and the slight difference with the Raiden intro. But thats not a big deal and has no relevance to the gamplay. And the FMVs look slightly better on PSX but both have them so not a big deal.
    Overall I'd pick the 64 version over the psx. But this game is underrated imo.

    I think the N64 overall looks better. Although textures may be ever so slightly low res, the bilinear shading and no warping does a lot to make it look better than the PS1 not as much as I remember it at the time, but still looks better IMO.
    I think for the time you also have to look at your options. Why would you choose MK4 on PS1, you have Soul Edge, Tekken, Tobal No.1 and 2, first two Tohshinden games, the CPS2 arcade games aren’t as bad as Saturn fanboys like to tell you. On N64 this was pretty much top of the heap if you wanted a fighting game.

    • @angrymobsters1599
      @angrymobsters1599 Рік тому

      The tohsinden games were obsolete by the time this came out and they honestly were to slow paced and movement was awful. Tobal was cool earlier on but Ehrgeiz was better even though it's similiar. Soul edge aged gracefully throughout it's span. Great pace, graphics solid movement and controls, solid replay value too. Mk4 was still a solid pickup for more hectic bloody fast paced combat just like you said though there was more options for better or for worse.

      @sloppynyuszi Рік тому

      @@angrymobsters1599 I think Toshinden gets a bad wrap. I played the sequel recently, and it’s a fun little game. I mean it has blocky graphics that aged as well as any other game of the era… poorly, but personally I prefer it to Tekken and Tekken 2 that is basically more boring characters fighting on a mode 7 plain. Tekken is also a fun game, but it’s also different. At the time it was one of the first 3D fighters not trying to be realistic and had fireballs in it. I think people are exaggerating the narrative of it being early and not very good.

    • @lancepage1914
      @lancepage1914 Рік тому

      @@sloppynyuszi I agree with you that this was on top the heap for fighting games on N64. I didn't own a N64 (until much much later) as I was a fighting game fanatic and PS1 had the best variety of games overall, especially fighting games - for the generation at least. I remember when the Saturn was released, before the PlayStation but we got the PlayStation because it still had better titles and it looked and played way better and more fighting games. People that love Saturns are fanboys and it's hilarious how much they go on about how much better was than PlayStation. But I don't live in Japan or didn't import from there so Saturn was out of the question - because Japan had the cream of the crop for Saturns software and hardware. What turned me off about Saturn was the colour palette always looked less than the PlayStation and N64, like heaps of colours were missing. The hardware couldn't do transparent textures either, most arcades of the time couldn't either but the vast colour palette of arcade hardware made up for it.

Graphics wise they are very similar, PS1 looks a bit sharper and more pixelated and jaggy, while the N64 looks softer but less jaggy and pixilated. It's close in-game. N64 has less pixelation. PS1's stages are darker (I don't really mind... you could say it does lend to the MK atmosphere). PS1's CGI endings, also found in the PC version, look better than the N64's.

      It might do, or close enough 60fps. I had it on PS1 back in the day. The graphics were okay, good enough, got the job done. But I kept playing it as I was more surprised at how fun it is to play and the frame pacing is quite well done, at least it doesn't load mid gameplay. Only before fights and after when a fatality occurs.

    N64 polygon models are more stable and you don't get the weird jagged-ness of the edges like you do in most PS1 games, because N64 had built-in hardware support for things like that, but otherwise they look the same. Actually, I will say I like the colors on the PS1 version a little better.

    in terms of gameplay they are the same, and visual it's a little better on n64 (smoother with no jaggies) n64 has no loadings , but the ps1 has the movies (still mk4 was not a really good in this area and movies where horrible)
    but still very similar products overall.

    First this game (on PS1) really had no chance: Tekken 3 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 were already released in arcades and to every region and even today are still 2 of the greatest fighting games of all time. Coming from UMK3 this along with Mythologies Sub Zero left MK fans with a lot to be disappointed about. MK4 was pretty much a step down from UMK3 in every gameplay aspect and we lost a lot of fan favorite characters. At least it avoided Thrill Kill (which I believe may have hurt or done this game and maybe MK in general in) as it’s gameplay works just as well and it was hella more gorey than this; again this came came out AFTER 2 of the greatest fighting games of all time, and hit a real low point in the series gameplay wise from this Mythologies and especially Special Forces. Maybe they just got lucky Thrill Kill got unreleased…?

      I don't remember anyone thinking SFA3 was a great fighting game. What I remember was it being criticized for being a meter happy unbalanced mess with lousy music and odd new characters. The fighting game crowd where I lived hated it and preferred SFA2. I didn't like it at first apart from playing Cody and Guy but the more I learned the game the more I grew to like it. Thrill Kill was never gonna be a threat to MK. Play the Wu-Tang game. It's fun, but it's not nearly as good as MK4 or even Bloody Roar. Once the violence and 90s shock value stuff was removed it was an above average console fighter.

    N64 had better character models, better rendered backgrounds, instant load speed, and the in game engine cutscenes are funnier and I prefer them silly.
    While the PS1 color pallet is darker, it doesn’t look washed out like the n64 does. The n64 seemed too bright but that can be fixed in settings for the tv. The only reason I can see to get the ps1 version is the FMVs and the controller might feel better to use. It’s close but N64 wins on visual presentation at least

    There are some differences, the N64 version has the stages looking brighter & are missing the FMV from the PS1 counterpart. Both have great music & most of the sound effects. But I did notice the PS1 having a bit more detail in certain areas. Like on the stage that rains, you could see the droplets 💧 hit & splash on the ground.

    Same developer, pretty much the same game. Though the N64 version looks better, you have to put up with that horrible controller, not to mention the arcade original's awful in-game cutscenes(used for the opening and endings). What I think we all need to giver props to, no matter your preferred version, is the fact that Eurocom has both versions running at a silky-smooth 60fps. I loved the PSX version until the DC version hit(MK Gold), but if you can put with the N64 controller, it's not a bad way to go either...

    I think MK4, in general, sucks. It's one of those games that moved too early into the 3D side of things. It lost all of the gritty realistic side that made it famous. It looks like fighting puppets with ketchup stains.
    The first MK after this that I think was worthy to be played and seen again is Mortal Kombat X (yes, even MK9 for PS3 looks kinda "toys fighting" to me).
    They should have just made it in 2D again but with much more care for the fatalities animations (like removing all of those extra bones and some more realistic physics on the leftover bodies...).
    Anyways, thanks VC DECIDE.
