- Dhananjay Balarishnan, an award winning Indian student has become a hero by using his institute’s annual convocation ceremony to speak against Israeli atrocities in Gaza. Dhananjay Balakrishnan, the IIT Madras student who won the Governor’s Prize for all-round proficiency in his dual degree, said that inaction would be complicity and he was duty bound to support the people of Palestine. His short speech has earned him plenty of plaudits.
UK-based journalist Rifat Jawaid explains the significance of Balakrishnan’s speech.

This young man is a man of substance who is not just an IITian but thinks and observes whats happen around him. People who only educate themselves for achieving materialistic success and fame are people who are selfish and shallow. While people like Balakirshnan are different in the sense that their education make them think about the betterment of humanity and speak out against the evil of the society. Salute this man for speaking out for humanity.

IIT has an entrance requirement of 99% up marks in board exams. I have known people who couldn't get into IIT because they fell short of the mark by as low as 0.01%. Just being a student there is an achievement.

He can't see atrocities of Hindus in neighbouring countries and yet talks about a country thousand miles far which India cannot control.
Mr Balakrishnan is only an intellectual but also such a decent human being. He also has a social conscience. I am Indian and am so very proud of him. I am very glad he is bringing awareness to the Gaza situation. I am in agreement with him about Israel. I have lost all respect for Israel and especially when they re-elected the criminal Benjamin Netanyahu.
I would have liked this young man to be heading India one day because he does have the compassion and the social conscience that would be great for a politician to have. Right now Modi has divided India based on religion and has riled all the HIndus against Christians, Muslims, etc. Politicians like Modi should be above that because India consists of all its citizens not only Hindus. I applaud Mr Balakrishnan to give such a daring speech even though he comes from the highest cast in India. My very best wishes to him.
