    What are you using to monitor the dpf levels? , I just replaced the egr and within a week the dpf threw a code , I drive about 1.5 hours at 55+ every day since I’ve replaced the egr . I also have a code for my def tank , I’m not quite sure if the code for the def tank would stop regeneration but I was not aware of how or when the dpf regenerated until the code came up , I am running a program tomorrow to do a dpf regen. I have a 2011 335d with 160k miles

    Yo, good video, thank you. I recently bought a BMW which was used for very short journeys for the majority of the past year. I know the previous owner very well, upon buying the car he mentioned it has a little which happens around 1000 revs from time to time. The owner noted a filter is the issue, he’s had it check twice and he’s been told to give it a good run out. I did 1000 miles in the past 2 weeks and noticed no difference. I then started looking into this filter issue and come across a number of videos including yours.
    This evening I took the car out at 60 mph for 30 mins with revs no lower than 3000.
    I think it’s solved the issue! Well I hope at least.
    Fortunately I know about this issue now, and how to resolve it. I hit around 500-600 motorway miles a week for my job, so shouldn’t have an issue keeping it under control.
    Thanks for the video!

    thanks for the useful video. at just under 100k mi, my 535d has thrown egr codes and dpf codes. my first thought is that the dpf is clogged, since i've read and seen so much about this. i'm currently in the process of removal and will be doing a couple chemical baths; de-grease/de-soot, then de-ash. also, manifold, egr and port cleaning will be part of this effort as well. upon taking apart the intake system, i wasn't surprised to see a massive soot buildup in the manifold and egr, but it does make me wonder if my egr faults were preventing a re-gen. i've driven it 30k mi in 4 years, numerous long trips, but in those 4 years, i've only ever seen the re-gen light on once. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Yet another mathematician obsessed with numbers... There is no way on earth any manufacturer could tell you how clogged your DPF is,unless you have your car plugged into OB diagnostics. The man from BMW was very correct to tell you to drive your car once a while on a long journey,and if you couldn't find the logic in his advice,then you are just another noob who has extra time to spend asking questions just to make himself feel special. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new bmw🤠 as you said if you're doing regular short journeys, you'll need to keep an eye on the dpf. Similar adaptor and the app will keep it safe and in good condition. Also, driving at higher RPM is for older E series cars when they don't do natural and forced regen. It doesn't apply to F series like mine and yours.

    Very, very useful video, thank you.
    I have one question - my g31 has faulty active grille flaps (they are open all the time) - I was told that it may prevent DPF cleaning process. Do you know if that is true? My car normally reaches operating temperature (about 95 °C or whatever it is) and there are no idrive error messages. There are, however, two error messages in diagnostics (DDE 32C300 - bottom radiator blind, plausability: control deviation; and DDE 279B00 - radiator shutter, activation: electrical fault). There are no other error messages.
    So, can these errors prevent DPF cleaning? And would failed DPF cleaning produce any error codes, or there is no way of knowing if it works or not (except checking the debris level with this App)?
    Thank you! This is the best explanation on BMW DPF cleaning I have found!

      Hi, thanks for your comment, always happy to hear that I'm being helpful to the community.
      Dfp regeneration is a very sensitive process in modern cars and a great care and caution must be taken to avoid further and more expensive repairs. As you and I said, there's no other way to see your dpf regen status or soot level on the car, so best solution is to use a simple app and adaptor to keep an eye on that. I can't confirm if your dpf regen process is working properly due to flaps staying open all the time, but I don't think it should be a problem.
      This app and adaptors also help you see many other things in your car with details, do yourself a favour and you'll be very happy.
      All the best 👍

    Thanks for great video! I’m looking at an 2016 X5. If I get the Bimmer Tool, can I use it to check the vehicle I’m looking at? Might the dealer have issues with me doing this? What would I want to check? Thank you!!!

    • @bmwsolutions7880
      @bmwsolutions7880  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment and a good question 👍
      Short story is 'yes' you can see all the fault codes using bimmertool on any BMW with no restrictions.
      However, the seller may not agree on such a check on their car for reasons ranging from not being able to understand the adaptor you're trying to connect to their car and carry out some checks, not familiar with the check process people are doing in this generation or simply they don't want you to check the car because the car has serious faults. If any of these scenarios happen, I'd draw my attention elsewhere without arguing. That's why uou should shortlist a few cars at least.
      Finally, if you're buying from BMW dealership which I highly recommend, you also get 100% convenience. BMW dealers make sure their cars tick all boxes before leaves the dealer including, fault free ecus, good mechanical checks, new tyres and conditioned alloys, valleting ect. You may find BMW delaers a bit more expensive but they give you a huge piece of mind. Hope this is helpful ✌️

    • @amazon5031
      @amazon5031 5 місяців тому

      It is worthwhile to get an ODBII scanner and app for your car. You don't want to regen too often, but at right intervals. In BMW they measure back pressures before starting a regen. Here with the ODBII scanner (and the corresponding app for your car) they measure soot and ash levels. As it said in the video the app normally tells you when it is time to start the regen. But there is nothing you can do with the ash except taking the DPF off and immersing it in a bucket of chemicals to dissolve the ashes. That job is for professionals in BMW garage or other dedicated mechanics. Also be aware that BMW also provides two kinds of services for DPF regen: one is to inject some chemicals to clean the soot and the other is to wash the whole thing. The former is somewhat similar to the regen that you can do yourself, the latter is the wash, which cost about a few hundred dollars for BMW to do it.

    I know this is very subjective, but after how many short journeys - lets say like 2km the dpf soot level is high to require a DPF regeneration? If I will be making just short trips lets say 2km x 2 for 2 weeks. Then I have overally done around 56 km in really short journeys. Will the soot level be already high?
    Is it enough to take it on the long journey every month (generally), when the mileage isn't very high? I have never owned a diesel engine car. Thanks for reply!

    • @bmwsolutions7880
      @bmwsolutions7880  10 місяців тому

      I understand you're trying to learn more about your car and its components but this dpf regen is a very grey area in which the exact values may change from model to model, so short answer is yes, it is ok to take it to a long journey once a month but you wouldn't know if the car needs regen, so if you want to be clear about it buy an adaptor and the app, trust me it's a great investment 👍

      Hi, looks like everything's fine in your car. Ash level is what remains in the dpf filter after burning the soot, so it will increase over time up to 90-100 grams or 125000 mile. After that limit, you can take off dpf and carry out chemical cleaning and reset/register it then use the same dpf again for another 125000 miles. Bimmertool also has option to reset dpf adaptation.

      Soot and ash levels are different. The reason your soot level is going down during regen is because exhaust temperature is burning it. So, you get left with ash in the dpf. This ash doesn't go away until you remove your dpf and do chemical cleaning. Typical max ash level on a dpf is 100 grams, so don't worry about it for now 👍

      I don't use forced regeneration, my car does natural regeneration when soot level is around 40%. If the car doesn't meet natural regen requirements (old or completely blocked dpf, broken sensor etc) you need to manually trigger forced regen.
      How many miles/km you can drive depends on your journey habits. If you do lots of short drives, soot level goes up very quickly (within a few hundred miles).

      Unfortunately you're correct, especially euro5 and 6 engines are so tightly constructed, so any mods on the engine might cause a serious problems somewhere else in the car. Just a tought: shouldn't it be vise versa ? Because EGR is supposed to lower EGT and thus reduce NOx. Theory says EGR introduces less O2 in the engine and lowers burning temperatures. I think higher EGT means more "natural" burning of soot.

      Hey again, I've received the Vgate obd today, plugged into the car, connected, I'm using a non paid version of Bimmerlink... The dpf reading was as follows, soot mass 19.61g, oil ask mass 44.79g - lots of other measurements and the last one says the dpf has around 75000k left on it. Any comments. Also how do you force the regeneration process, do you need to be driving the car or can I leave it on the drive? Also, which app is best in your opinion as a fully paid version....

      @bmwsolutions7880  Рік тому

      Hi, all readings look fine. Soot level should be 20gram minimum to trigger natural regen. Looks like car is healthy and doing it's regen periodically. Ash level hoes over 100gram, then dpf needs to be cleaned chemically outside the car.
      Finally, I'm using bimmertool for regen as it shows all percentage values nicely. Service functions are also nicely laid out in the app.

    I have a 2008 X3 20d euro4 N47 with 220,000 km, and about 33,000 km left to the "limit" that means "service".
    So, you can calculate that BMW has "set" the limit to approximately 250,000 km which is about 155,000 miles.
    Then I don't know if they have changed this "limit" sometimes later on.
    The problem here is that the DPF must not be full of ash, which is the main problem, if everything has worked properly through out the years.
    If everything works properly the regeneration works perfectly and there will be no extra soot build up.

    • @bmwsolutions7880

      Hi, if you do regular short journeys in the city , regeneration gets triggered by the car when over 25gram of soot to clean dpf. If the soot level is much higher, car starts regen at random intervals to clean dpf and maintain engine power. In other words, car can trigger forced regen based on driving habits and soot level.

    I am a bit confused about how the DPF Regen works? I have a 2018 BMW F30 320d. When I measured the Soot level with BimmerTool, it showed 28 gram (over 40%). With that level, I drove 9.2 miles in stop and go traffic mostly in urban areas (30mph) and in dual carriage ways with 50 mph speed limit. After I had reached my destination, turned off the car for about 10 minutes then again drove 9.2 miles back home. In total, I drove 18.4 miles in stop and go traffic with a top speed no more than 55 mph at any time. After I came back home I have checked the soot level again and to my surprise the level dropped below 10 gram. I was not expecting any regeneration because according to the video the car needs to maintain at least 60 mph without any stopping.
    Can anyone please explain how the DPF dropped the soot level?

    • @bmwsolutions7880
      @bmwsolutions7880  2 роки тому

      Yes, you're right. It looks a bit confusing but same thing happened to me as well. If you have a modern Euro6 diesel engine, dpf can trigger at lower speeds by increasing the exhaust temperature without speeding to 60mph, thinking that you forgot to regen. This is a precaution by the engine to prevent dpf blockage. However, it is not recommended to let your car do that regularly when the engine is not warmed up properly and below 60mph.
