I think what I like so much about his music is that it pulls you in and then pushes you away, back and forth... it resonates, then loses touch again. It's a very quick and smooth transition, in and then out, I've never heard anything like it before.
i love this man more than anything. this clip is great because you get to hear him not only sing, you get to hear him speak. his eyes sparkle when he smiles and his voice swirls like amber smoke when he talks. he is truly one of the most wonderful people that has ever graced this sphere. gentle and introspective, talented and genuine...he is always and forever going to be one of the greatest. i feel lucky to have found his music & to have this connection with his music. I AM YOUR FAVORITE HORSE.
i am hard to please musically, in a musical world where to many artists try to hard and in a way it always come of as disingenuous. but this guy comes across effortlessly gifted and with a instantly recognizable voice and talent.
He's so articulate and expressive in his speaking.. So, insightful.. But in an artistic, spiritual way (not to say he isnt an intellectual, but he's definitely driven by emotion) To top it all off his voice is exceptional. Really really good.. Lyricist, vocalist, musician, human. Much love to you Will.
I was thinking the opposite like he was almost stammering. Dropping so many names. Reminding me of the time someone yelled to get on with it. Not nice I know. But I remember a time when someone called out a song for him to play and he said, "I'm going to play what I want" and "I don't even remember those old songs". I sure love him though. Really amazing.
Ouch. I've been watching so many KEXP performances during the Covid lockdowns, but I just stumbled upon this video today because I was looking for a new video on Will's channel. No idea why back then it wasn't suggested by UA-cam - it was already over 5 years old back then. The performance is a real gem. The version of I See A Darkness is also deeply melancholic, but a little more tongue-in-cheek than Johnny Cash's dead-serious cover, which can make you feel suicidal. Awesome. Have to watch it again...
I've just recently delved deeper into Bonnie Prince Billy's music. Was aware of him for a long time, but never quite got into his music. But now it's just appealing to me. He makes for an interesting interviewee too. This was very nice!
I have enjoyed his music for a long time and recently decided to look some things up 'bout him via you tube etc... Nice to see the love - guess i'm not so exclusively smart and thoughtful!
@timeslikethieves83 - I feel the exact same way. I was lucky enough to hear the album I see a darkness in college in 2007 and I've listening to everything this man has done since.
HOLY SHIT. I love this actor. Never listened to Bonnie Prince Billie. Love Angel Olsen. Decided to listen to some of her old musical roots, then found out he's the voice behind the name. Pretty damn....ahh who cares.
Haha! It's one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite songs(no more workhorse blues by Palace Brothers) -saw me through some really tough times. I have a Will Oldham portrait tattoo on me and above it reads "I am your favorite horse".
He’s incredible, but I’m trying to figure out what’s up with his guitar. His low E sounds down tuned, but is he purposely dulling certain notes , or accidentally, or he he playing a guitar with strings that are years old? It just sounds completely flat, and clicks or thuds every time he changes chords. His voice sounds amazing over anything, but I’m wondering if he’s purposely playing some really old guitar/strings?
quite possible- i have a stella from the 70s never been refurbished frets worn down to nothing, and the strings on it are nearing 4 years old but i feel like i gottom just were i want em... it sounds horribly triumphant.
Possibly the greatest songwriter of our time.
Certainly in the conversation.
Huh?
Una MARAVILLA
He is one of a kind. Pure genius.
We are blessed to have him and his music.

Will is one of my favorite song-writers. So glad he's come up in my lifetime

Best performance of I See a Darkness I have ever heard. I love Will Oldham. I'll hoop and holler that if I am allowed.
I forgot to mention: he has the fingernails of a true gentleman!
I spoke to Will Oldham after his show one night.
I was off my silly little face...
He was really accommodating considering the state I was in.
this guy makes me cry every time i listen to it, what a soul...
well worth the half-hour.

for a dude who was mostly criticized for being a weak vocalist in his early days, he sure has developed into a great singer
Fantastic session.
Here is the new 'I See A Darkness' Video he referred to, it kills.

Real country is quiet with a man and his guitar.
beautiful story about the wolfes :)
Will is incredible
A god
Can anyone identify this guitar? Looks like a solid mahogany Martin but I can't deduce the model.
looks like a 00-15 or 000-15 to me

He's just not that much of a guitar player and that's all there is too it. The guitar is simply the back drop to the voice and words.
Mustache FTW.
Matt would have loved this.

Ha ha...Bonnie Prince Billy writes a song for you and then YOU DON'T USE IT!! Mark didn't just drop the ball..he lost it.
And I absolutely couldn't stand that poppy version of I see a Darkness.

+Charles Crumb He's just an extremely animated performer and a very unique individual.
Jared G of course, I agree
