Barn Find Fergie. Episode 10. How To Time An Engine

  • Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
  • In this episode the lads demonstrate how to time an engine and how to set tappet spacings on their old school vehicle. They also manage to squeeze in some cake based discussions.
This project follows the restoration of a Barn Find 1953 Ferguson TEF 20 Little Grey Fergie. This vintage tractor was found in a hedge where it had sat for 31 years. Can Jimmy de Ville (from Goblin Works Garage) and Gav (former RAF engineer) bring it back to life using their engineering, building, fabrication and make do and mend skills?
There might be extreme, dangerous and crazy measures needed to breath life back into this retro, vintage vehicle and once farming extreme machine.

I generally use a smear of grease to keep the rocker cover gasket in place whilst fitting the cover. No idea if that's ok to do but it works for me. Still no dancing, not even a little jig to that music. I can only live in hope you're practising your moves for the final episode. Can't wait. Great vids.

Hi guys enjoying the build, long time since I was working as a mechanic (40 years) but I think your timing should be set at TDC on No1 cylinder on the firing/compression stroke if I remember correctly you could find the injector pump delivering into a cylinder with open inlet/exhaust valves. Hope this helps.

You can use the "rule of nine" for setting tappets on a 4 cyl engine. When valve 1 is fully open, set gap on 8 (1+8=9), when valve 2 is fully open, set gap on 7 (2+7=9) and so on

Yes - the pushrod Viva engine. It didn't have a rocker shaft; the rockers were cupped pressings which pivoted on a self-locking nut with a hemisperical lower surface, screwed onto a stud pressed into the head. As the adjuster nut was stationary it was easy to adjust the tappets with the engine running allegedly 😂 gave up and did it stationary in the end
