I love Joy of Life. It's so quirky and hilarious. I hope Xiao Zhan also comes back. Even though it's a supporting role, this would be a great chance for him to act opposite talented vets like Chen Daoming and Wu Gang. He seems like a down to earth guy who is serious at growing as an actor so what better way than to learn first hand from incredible actors like this.

For a guy whose only experience is a couple of night classes and some on-the-job experience, it's incredible the rate at which he's getting better. He's already better than some cringy actors I've tried to watch that went to college for this. He has lots of potential and just needs more training and experience.
@@meijiOrO For sure, he might get there one day if he's serious about the craft and work at it. But it's too early to call him a "great actor" right now. He's not yet. Don't have to go to college to be a great actor, and neither does a college guarantees a great actor. Time will tell.
Agree with you, The Untamed #1 period drama for me. I tried to watch love and destiny but keep falling asleep 😂😂, finally I gave up and rewatched the Untamed again 😭😭
The Untamed just made other dramas not so intetesting for me. I watched it during the summer and up til now, I cannot move on te a new drama. I'm so sad because I'm a drama lover and now I can only love the untamed 😭
Untamed already made it to Netflix, that says something :D I just wish they made an uncensored version for international screening with an alternative ending closer to novel.

Joy of life is unique in both acting & writing.... Really brilliant... How much he invested & worked in this drama is really worth of respect & admire & his effort are truly showing while watching his scenes... A really must watch... I hope they keep the quality in the second season & they don't ruin it
Now I really need to know which dramas are on your all time favorite list, so please make a video about it. My all time favorite is "Nirvana in fire", best drama I have ever watched. I also loved "Ruyis love in the royal palace", such an amazing tragic story, it's the first show ever that made me cry.
wow i didn't know Zhang Ruo Yun put so much effort into his role Fan Xian. He did do a great job and I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job. There's a peeve I have with actors/actresses where to a certain point of popularity, I start seeing the actress/actor on the screen instead of the character. I think he has what it takes to be a great actor. He turns into the character on screen and my head can only see him as Fan Xian. The same thing goes for another actor Li Xian inside Tianxin Mystic, he made he character so unique and convincing that it's impossible to see anyone else in that role. That's one of those roles that pop up in my mind. Looking forward to JOL2!!
Watched The Untamed because of BL although I see nothing because of censorship (🤯) but I did realize that even without the BL elements it is still a good series. 😊
My fav was The Untamed. But I only started watching C Dramas in the fall. All the Dramas I watch are threw internet. Nobody I know in there 30's have cable.

I haven’t completed nor started those three historical dramas you mentioned, although Untamed is definitely on my to watch list. I did start L&D based upon your other videos but I have since dropped it. I have watched up to 18 episodes and nothing has happened?! In kdramas, that's a full completed drama! I'm not sure if i have the patience. I've watched Goodbye, My Princess and loved that love one to bits! Since so many ppl hand talked about Joy of Life, I'm going to give that love a try next. I'm on a historical drama withdrawal.

I couldn't get into Untamed or Love and Destiny and I can't seem to figure out why - it's a bit mind boggling for me considering all the hype especially around Untamed! On the other hand, I am hooked on Joy of life, I think it's a very creatively done drama and keeps you intrigued and joyful, all at the same time! I would say I'm enjoying it to the same level as Nirvana in Fire! That drama is on the top of the list for me. I haven't have the time to watch the Untamed, but i have watched love and destiny. Even though i like the cast, i think the story is a bit boring and dragged. I watched it till the end, but i often skip some scene. Joy of life got me hooked from the first episode

I don't get it either, especially since i really couldn't get past Wang Yibo's acting...i'm surpsrised she ended up liking it so much when in the beginning she didn't seem to be that fond of it? Same with the guardian tbh..i couldn't even watch for more than 3 episodes due to the cheap production and some of the characters and plot development. I feel like, they wouldn't be given the same chance if they weren't bl...seems to be really popular with (young) women, that's really the main reason for all the hype, even though some don't want to admit it to themselves. To each their own!
I came across Love and Destiny very recently. It has been my steady Covid 19 companion. I LOVE Zhang Zhen and Ni Ni (I was able to finish Rise of the Phoenixes only because of her!) as the leads - impeccable acting! The story and characters are so well developed, it's a pleasure to see things unfold (especially once I got beyond the first 10 episodes!). It's been made very lovingly (I mean that I found no careless arcs and characters), and I have gone back multiple times and rewatched this lovely drama. One of my favorite historical-fantasy dramas of all times! Btw, I LOVE your channel, and I found it through one of your Love & Destiny videos ❤

I like Just An Encore and Goodbye My Princess. These are a few series that I've barely skipped while watching. At the end of 2019 a lot of period dramas are released. I like Joy Of Life and am also watching Under The Power. Happy New Year! Let's hope for a better 2020 for dramas.

Yeah. I started following this channel cos i like the more serious discussions on quality of acting, plot, production, behind the scenes info, industry news etc. This is what makes it different from other channels. I just skipped her vids which are just fan-girling in nature eg. all those on Guardian, Untamed .
Kent Wan I respect your preference and you can always like or dislike something, but liking The Untamed and/or Guardians doesn’t equal fangirling. I believe they are really quality dramas with good story and acting. Yes we may fangirl abt it but that only happens when the other necessary aspects are already checked, at least to our opinion. And even in her videos of these series she still stick to those aspects pretty well imo.

Love and Destiny is the finest of fantasy genre until today. I know its story is really getting out of trend but i believe people will aprreciate it more and more as time goes by.
Joy of life in my view is the very best drama in 2019 and beyond, I love everything about it. I'm patiently waiting for the second season, hope I don't have to wait for too long.

Hey AVENUEX! I’m a newbie (or newer-bie) to CCDs but I’m absolutely hooked. To ensure my opinions of this new genre (for me) are untainted/uninfluenced I only read reviews AFTER I view the program. We’re on-par with 2 of your favorites. I’ve seen both Love & Destiny and Joy of Life and absolutely love them...for the quality of the storylines and effectiveness/realism of the cast members’ acting...also the “quality” of the humor. Both programs were so well done I’d truly enjoy seeing sequels. However I’ve tried three times but was unable to watch the Untamed...just didn’t resonate. Maybe I’ll try again in the future, but there are sooooo many CCDs to choose from and now I’ve been dabbling in Korean dramas which are also phenomenal! Thanks for your reviews...BTW I’m also trying to learn Mandarin and noticed your have some UA-cam training sessions as well. Great! Thanks!

The untammed is popular among female audiences, not so much for guys. What hit Joy of life real hard is the leaked episode. Personally, I prefer colour grading of Joy of Life than other dramas.
Even though I, myself, is not a Chinese nor overseas ethnic Chinese but I'm a Sinophile and I can see how you've contributed a lot to the spreading of Chinese culture to the world. It's very unfortunate that China is the most misunderstood country in the world in our times. I just really hope people around the world can see the real China and enjoy Chinese culture as they should. Thanks for your great work and I wish you a very happy new year! :)
I hadn't seen The untamed in 2019.I watched it in 2020 . Though it had some flaws or drawbacks still it was able to manage all of those shortcomings. The chemistry, the story, acting and other things were great. I haven't found any other drama more interesting than it. So I am just continuously giving up other dramas after 5_6 eps. So The untamed is my most favorite drama.
I only just found your channel! And I love it so much! I was so obsessed with everything Chinese after having watched the Untamed in 2019. Then the pandemic put a damper on the obsession, but I am slowly starting to recover from the shock ^^ and getting back into Chinese drama. Had the pandemic not happened I would probably be fluent in Mandarin by now and cooking Chinese recipes every day. But c'est la vie. You are amazing. I love the format of your channel talking about Chinese drama, film and TV. I am a former film student, too. So I love this idea of making a UA-cam channel on this premise. I am so glad that Bureau of Transformers got a shout out! For me, the show turned out to be amazingly clever and insightful. I have never encountered a leading couple that faced the same issues in their love line as in this drama. The only other contemporary drama that I managed to sit through was A Little Reunion lol....OHHH one of the young leads in the show is played by Guo Zifan, a member of X NINE with Xiao Zhan lol. I watched so many ancient dramas this year that they're all kind of a blur to me. The most distinctive character that I've seen this year would be Li Yuan's Yu Chang from The Longest Day in Chang'an. She was incomparably beautiful, ruthless, and tender all at the same time. I basically only watched the show for her appearance lol.

I'm an avid fan of your channel and i especially like the additional information you provided about Chinese culture, music etc. I agree that 2019 isn't the best year for contemporary Chinese drama. Guardian was a contemporary drama with huge flaws, but i enjoyed immensely for the same reasons you did. But there was a drama in 2017 First Half of My Life starring Jin Dong, Ma Yili and Yuan Quan that I thought was really good - probably better than Ode to Joy - but I believe you haven't mentioned in your channel. I wish you can cover it some time because as far as Chinese contemporary drama goes, that one is among the best and unique in recent years
I know that drama, i was so weirded out by ma yili's role becoming entangled with Jin Dong's role, and him ditching Yuan Quan's role...I didn't continue

@@maimee2angel I like that for the most part the couple is a team and deal with problems together. The male lead is not stereotypical: he's neither the cold stoic jerk nor the innocent bunny. He's good at some things and bad at others, and he really tries to understand people. For me the show really got better as it went on, I wasn't convinced in the beginning either. And it's ultimately very uplifting.
@@noaaa7 okay then I hold on til few more episodes. And I agree that male lead is like normal people. I watched this after The King Avatar so the gaming aspect is disappointing. Maybe that's part of why I don't get into it as fast as TKA. Also I can't connect to female lead so far.
@@linadecrava895 it's good. Strong point is their in game graphics so for gaming aspect, it's satisfactory. The avatar looks so cool. Story wise quite similar in former god player forced to leave the team because he's kinda hard headed only focus in game and not in commercial aspect.
Love destiny is so underrated.. I think it is better than ten miles peach to me... I loved how both female and male lead are excellent actors which wasn't really apparent in ten miles.... & the end was happy also,and couldn't agree more about the small gestures & the chemistry between the characters in love & destiny

Love and destiny is really under rated... its like you said it’s soo much better than TMOPB in acting wise, in fact it’s my favourite period drama couldn’t get enough of Shen zun and ling xi 🥰🥰🥰🥰 God I love it soooo much... whoever didn’t watch it you really need to give it a try ...the acting of Chang Chen is superb his expressions when he falls for ling xi makes me want my own Shen zun ❣️❣️❣️
I gave up on watching the untamed twice thinking it was too slow n the cgi felt like an eye cancer but 3rd time was a charm, i watched the whole series ,read the novel/manhua, watched the dongua, currently watching mdzsQ...n Still I want more! I wished this series had 100 episodes. I usually cant even finish a good produced 16 ep kdrama n i rewatched this 50 ep series...God knows how many times already!! If i gotta say anything about this series is that...have patience, it will get better

Hi, I came across your channel by accident. Thanks for your best list. I can check out some dramas that are good but may have missed. I love Yang Mi’s acting and I think she is way above Ni Ni in acting talent (although both women are very beautiful) and so I would tend to pick Ten Miles Peach Blossoms over Love and Destiny even though I have not watched the latter one. Lin Yu Fen is such a great director (I first watched her work Love 020 with Yang Yang and Zheng Shuang). I would sweep her garden for eternity :-) just so that she can continue to make more dramas. Yang Yang is starting to direct now (With You) but he should watch and learn from Lin Yu Fen about storytelling and not just putting himself in the middle of the screen all the time. Don’t get me wrong. I fell in love with Yang Yang because he is so cute in Love 020.

Dont know why never got into Guardian or Untamed. Love Joy of Life got my parents to watch it and that never happens. Personally the color gradient doesn't bother me cant wait for season 2.
Just thought of sharing; i usually dont like dramas, i hate watching them n i never really had favourites before but.. i love the untamed so much? i really really adore it despite th flaws n everything like it really has th most special place in my heart i cant stop rewatching especially th good parts of it.. tried watching other c dramas (or any dramas, really) after but.. couldnt get into any of it i dnt even know why.. there's a lot of things i love abt TU: shijiexwwx's bond n ym siblings in general, wwx as a character (my most fav character ever existed), wangxian (in every version) - my most fav couple, th bond between everyone with wwx, n some other things - th morals, th angst, etc. There's also parts of th drama (a storyline - which i suppose better told in other adaptations but not in th live action) where i skip whenever im rewatching BUT it doesnt change th fact tht i still love th drama as a whole n i love it to th core no matter wht ppl say.. th chemistry between th two male leads i hv to say, is my fav dynamic ever shown on screen.. pfft so much of a bromance ha ha ha wangxian n their love story is th best thing ive ever known in fiction world (im a sucker for romance n theirs is my fav).

I'm not sure if i have the patience. I've watched Goodbye, My Princess and loved that love one to bits! Since so many ppl hand talked about Joy of Life, I'm going to give that love a try next. I'm on a historical drama withdrawal.

I couldn't get into Untamed or Love and Destiny and I can't seem to figure out why - it's a bit mind boggling for me considering all the hype especially around Untamed! On the other hand, I am hooked on Joy of life, I think it's a very creatively done drama and keeps you intrigued and joyful, all at the same time! I would say I'm enjoying it to the same level as Nirvana in Fire! That drama is on the top of the list for me. I haven't have the time to watch the Untamed, but i have watched love and destiny. Even though i like the cast, i think the story is a bit boring and dragged. I watched it till the end, but i often skip some scene. Joy of life got me hooked from the first episode

I don't get it either, especially since i really couldn't get past Wang Yibo's acting...i'm surpsrised she ended up liking it so much when in the beginning she didn't seem to be that fond of it? Same with the guardian tbh..i couldn't even watch for more than 3 episodes due to the cheap production and some of the characters and plot development. I feel like, they wouldn't be given the same chance if they weren't bl...seems to be really popular with (young) women, that's really the main reason for all the hype, even though some don't want to admit it to themselves.

I came across Love and Destiny very recently. It has been my steady Covid 19 companion. I LOVE Zhang Zhen and Ni Ni (I was able to finish Rise of the Phoenixes only because of her!) as the leads - impeccable acting!
The story and characters are so well developed, it's a pleasure to see things unfold (especially once I got beyond the first 10 episodes!). It's been made very lovingly (I mean that I found no careless arcs and characters), and I have gone back multiple times and rewatched this lovely drama. One of my favorite historical-fantasy dramas of all times!

Holycrap! You had me holding my breath throughout this entire video because of the way you started it. I was dreading at the end you were going to say you weren't doing this anymore! This could have actually caused me to shed a tear because as a new subscriber who's only found you a couple months ago and has quickly been working my way through your previous videos, I would be devastated. The breath of information you provide is invaluable to someone like me who's curious about a wide variety of subjects concerning the differences between the West and China. Xueran Chen is one of the most talented musicians out there. Yeah ..he is top on my list as well. I hope more productions will use him in the future!👍💕
My mother (55) watched the untamed without telling me and she watched it twice! I was already a big fan of mdzs novel and donghua so i was so surprised when she asked me what the debut song of UNIQ was!!! Eoeoeoeo

At the end of 2019 a lot of period dramas are released. I like Joy Of Life and am also watching Under The Power.

Yeah. I started following this channel cos i like the more serious discussions on quality of acting, plot, production, behind the scenes info, industry news etc. This is what makes it different from other channels. I just skipped her vids which are just fan-girling in nature eg. all those on Guardian, Untamed .
Kent Wan I respect your preference and you can always like or dislike something, but liking The Untamed and/or Guardians doesn’t equal fangirling. I believe they are really quality dramas with good story and acting. Yes we may fangirl abt it but that only happens when the other necessary aspects are already checked, at least to our opinion. And even in her videos of these series she still stick to those aspects pretty well imo.
I think "A Little Reunion" 小欢喜 is what you mentioned: a good contemporary drama, influence spread among different generations and different platforms.

Hey AVENUEX! I’m a newbie (or newer-bie) to CCDs but I’m absolutely hooked. To ensure my opinions of this new genre (for me) are untainted/uninfluenced I only read reviews AFTER I view the program. We’re on-par with 2 of your favorites. I’ve seen both Love & Destiny and Joy of Life and absolutely love them...for the quality of the storylines and effectiveness/realism of the cast members’ acting...also the “quality” of the humor. Both programs were so well done I’d truly enjoy seeing sequels. However I’ve tried three times but was unable to watch the Untamed...just didn’t resonate. Maybe I’ll try again in the future, but there are sooooo many CCDs to choose from and now I’ve been dabbling in Korean dramas which are also phenomenal!

The untammed is popular among female audiences, not so much for guys. What hit Joy of life real hard is the leaked episode. Personally, I prefer colour grading of Joy of Life than other dramas.
Even though I, myself, is not a Chinese nor overseas ethnic Chinese but I'm a Sinophile and I can see how you've contributed a lot to the spreading of Chinese culture to the world. It's very unfortunate that China is the most misunderstood country in the world in our times. I just really hope people around the world can see the real China and enjoy Chinese culture as they should. Thanks for your great work and I wish you a very happy new year! :)
I hadn't seen The untamed in 2019.I watched it in 2020 . Though it had some flaws or drawbacks still it was able to manage all of those shortcomings. The chemistry, the story, acting and other things were great. I haven't found any other drama more interesting than it. So I am just continuously giving up other dramas after 5_6 eps. So The untamed is my most favorite drama.
I only just found your channel! And I love it so much! I was so obsessed with everything Chinese after having watched the Untamed in 2019. Then the pandemic put a damper on the obsession, but I am slowly starting to recover from the shock ^^ and getting back into Chinese drama. Had the pandemic not happened I would probably be fluent in Mandarin by now and cooking Chinese recipes every day. But c'est la vie. You are amazing. I love the format of your channel talking about Chinese drama, film and TV. I am a former film student, too. So I love this idea of making a UA-cam channel on this premise. I am so glad that Bureau of Transformers got a shout out! For me, the show turned out to be amazingly clever and insightful. I have never encountered a leading couple that faced the same issues in their love line as in this drama. The only other contemporary drama that I managed to sit through was A Little Reunion lol....OHHH one of the young leads in the show is played by Guo Zifan, a member of X NINE with Xiao Zhan lol. I watched so many ancient dramas this year that they're all kind of a blur to me. The most distinctive character that I've seen this year would be Li Yuan's Yu Chang from The Longest Day in Chang'an. She was incomparably beautiful, ruthless, and tender all at the same time. I basically only watched the show for her appearance lol.

I'm an avid fan of your channel and i especially like the additional information you provided about Chinese culture, music etc. I agree that 2019 isn't the best year for contemporary Chinese drama. Guardian was a contemporary drama with huge flaws, but i enjoyed immensely for the same reasons you did. But there was a drama in 2017 First Half of My Life starring Jin Dong, Ma Yili and Yuan Quan that I thought was really good - probably better than Ode to Joy - but I believe you haven't mentioned in your channel. I wish you can cover it some time because as far as Chinese contemporary drama goes, that one is among the best and unique in recent years
I know that drama, i was so weirded out by ma yili's role becoming entangled with Jin Dong's role, and him ditching Yuan Quan's role...I didn't continue

@@maimee2angel I like that for the most part the couple is a team and deal with problems together. The male lead is not stereotypical: he's neither the cold stoic jerk nor the innocent bunny. He's good at some things and bad at others, and he really tries to understand people. For me the show really got better as it went on, I wasn't convinced in the beginning either. And it's ultimately very uplifting.

I watched this after The King Avatar so the gaming aspect is disappointing. Maybe that's part of why I don't get into it as fast as TKA. Also I can't connect to female lead so far.

@@linadecrava895 it's good. Strong point is their in game graphics so for gaming aspect, it's satisfactory. The avatar looks so cool. Story wise quite similar in former god player forced to leave the team because he's kinda hard headed only focus in game and not in commercial aspect.

Love destiny is so underrated.. I think it is better than ten miles peach to me... I loved how both female and male lead are excellent actors which wasn't really apparent in ten miles.... & the end was happy also,and couldn't agree more about the small gestures & the chemistry between the characters in love & destiny

Love and destiny is really under rated... its like you said it’s soo much better than TMOPB in acting wise, in fact it’s my favourite period drama couldn’t get enough of Shen zun and ling xi 🥰🥰🥰🥰 God I love it soooo much... whoever didn’t watch it you really need to give it a try ...the acting of Chang Chen is superb his expressions when he falls for ling xi makes me want my own Shen zun ❣️❣️❣️
I gave up on watching the untamed twice thinking it was too slow n the cgi felt like an eye cancer but 3rd time was a charm, i watched the whole series ,read the novel/manhua, watched the dongua, currently watching mdzsQ...n Still I want more! I wished this series had 100 episodes. I usually cant even finish a good produced 16 ep kdrama n i rewatched this 50 ep series...God knows how many times already!!

Hi, I came across your channel by accident. Thanks for your best list. I can check out some dramas that are good but may have missed. I love Yang Mi’s acting and I think she is way above Ni Ni in acting talent (although both women are very beautiful) and so I would tend to pick Ten Miles Peach Blossoms over Love and Destiny even though I have not watched the latter one. Lin Yu Fen is such a great director (I first watched her work Love 020 with Yang Yang and Zheng Shuang). I would sweep her garden for eternity :-) just so that she can continue to make more dramas. Yang Yang is starting to direct now (With You) but he should watch and learn from Lin Yu Fen about storytelling and not just putting himself in the middle of the screen all the time. Don’t get me wrong. I fell in love with Yang Yang because he is so cute in Love 020.

Late but the untamed in the beginning is admittedly a little boring. After that however, past epsiode 12 or so it starts getting good:)

Dont know why never got into Guardian or Untamed. Love Joy of Life got my parents to watch it and that never happens. Personally the color gradient doesn't bother me cant wait for season 2.
Just thought of sharing; i usually dont like dramas, i hate watching them n i never really had favourites before but.. i love the untamed so much? i really really adore it despite th flaws n everything like it really has th most special place in my heart i cant stop rewatching especially th good parts of it.. tried watching other c dramas (or any dramas, really) after but.. couldnt get into any of it i dnt even know why.. there's a lot of things i love abt TU: shijiexwwx's bond n ym siblings in general, wwx as a character (my most fav character ever existed), wangxian (in every version) - my most fav couple, th bond between everyone with wwx, n some other things - th morals, th angst, etc. There's also parts of th drama (a storyline - which i suppose better told in other adaptations but not in th live action) where i skip whenever im rewatching BUT it doesnt change th fact tht i still love th drama as a whole n i love it to th core no matter wht ppl say.. th chemistry between th two male leads i hv to say, is my fav dynamic ever shown on screen.. pfft so much of a bromance ha ha ha wangxian n their love story is th best thing ive ever known in fiction world (im a sucker for romance n theirs is my fav).
