Just imagine 1995 Muster vs Rafa play Roland Garros final, that would be monster match. The legendary Austrian won outstanding 11 clay court tournaments that year
@@TheKakarot_itachi today yes but in musters primetime he had a chance against rafa....but not in rafas prime you know what i mean i hope so...my English is not so good😑
gregorsamsa555 I tend to agree that Muster in his absolute prime, ie 1995, would have been able to beat Nadal on clay, he was actually that good. But of course, we shall never know
What was so great about that era was all the different styles. You had pure serve and volley players like Edberg, all court players like Becker and Sampras, attacking baseliners like Agassi and Courier, baseline counterpunchers like Chang and the baseline grinders like Muster or Bruguera. Combined with great differences with regards to the speed of the courts you had very interesting matchups. Today everybody plays the same no matter what surface or the opponent. The only exception is Federer because he can do things modern players don't even bother to learn.
It's not really better, but it's much more interesting to watch than many players on the tour today. That said, depending on who you're watching, you can see much better tennis being played nowadays.
That used to be the case with tennis until late 2000s, great tennis matches even in early rounds. There were variety in styles and in courts, matches were won by outplaying the rival. Now every player is the same, either a hard hitter from the baseline or a pusher, no technique or tactics. Everyone tries to outgrind each other.
With his miracously recovery and his achievements, i still don´t get it how he didn´t make the cut for the Hall of Fame! What a warrior, i just wished that he at list had won a second French Open.
muster said years later in an interview that he was short before quitting before this year. he was insecure that he can really win a slam or beat the top. even people often though he is cocky and self confident, he really wasnt, it just seemed that way from the outside. he then went trough his results and realized that he had beaten everyone at least once. this kinda reflects in this match. at the start he wasnt so confident, went supersafe on the backhand, kids today would even say cringy at some points. But with every great point he won confidence set in, he took more risk and hit even better shots until sampras slightly broke. 6:35 that smash, sampras was full of it. tired of him running after every lost cause and fetching more than a golden retriever. i think the semi against sampras showed his full potential
Huge fan of Muster, but did forget how smooth, compact and easy on the eye was Malivai Washington game, a true all around player, maybe he lack a bit of explosivness but what a nice package of groundstrokes and volley´s he had. Terrible luck with injuries, he should have stayed a bit longer in the top if it wasn´t for them.
@@masters.1000 Halle would of course be a dream. In Germany and the first on grass. Halle with her Roger-Federer-Allee is very popular in Germany. I am there every year. However, the conditions are not so easy to meet for a Super 9 status. an exemption for lawn would be needed.
Master 1000 are limited by the ATP and the only one who would sell there spot is Madrid, but want a loooot of money. Vienna was thinking about it, but its to expensive.
Yeah! So disappointed to see the Hamburg Masters become an inconsequential tournament now. Look at the roll of honor and the recent winners. Does not befit such an old and for long a prestigious event.
Really enjoyed watching that, thank you so much! Muster reminds me a lot of Rafa; very physical, runs hard for everything, and a solid, solid leftie. Mal played really well as well. I haven't seen many videos of him at all, so this was a nice reminder.
Muster was a gladiator... its easy to be federer´s fan because he generaly wins... but being a muster´s fan is tough, nothing came easy to de austrian... his shots wearen´t the best, but his hearth was in my opinion the best in history of tennis. my favorite player ever.
Muster was an animal with a crazy defense. He made you play at least one more shot. And then another one. Hated that with Muster and still hate it with Nadal.
I believe this win in Essen (on a carpet surface) and the two wins on hard surface in early 1997 (Dubai and Miami) are Muster's biggest achievements. For winning on clay was like daily practice for him. In fact he made headlines when he lost of the red dirt.
Ironic how Sampras lost against Muster on carpet, when Sampras was the one to complain Muster didn't deserve the nr 1 ranking because he mainly won all his tournaments on clay. Good job Thomas!
MaliVai Washington is a bit of a forgotten man. Made 1993 Miami final. 1996 Wimbledon final, final here. USA had so many great players, they could have back up like Todd Martin and Malavai Washington for Davis Cup, although not sure how much Davis Cup MaliVai played.
Fantastic stuff from Muster. To beat Pete on indoor carpet was no joke. Washington was a solid player, too. Muster remains underrated on hard and overrated on clay. For all of his prowess on dirt, he won but one RG. Never even reached another final. Courier and Bruguera did a lot better than that. Muster had more clay Masters titles than both of them taken together, and yet a lone RG win.
Watching Muster here we can see that in the men's game quite a few players still play with a one hander. Whereas in the women's game, Henin, Mauresmo, Vinci seemed to inspire no one to come through with a one hander, or coaches have way too much power and influence, not allowing any young player to develop a one hander to be different.
Great video. People don't realize that Djokovic missed winning in Hamburg and Madrid Masters (when it was played on indoor hard court), so he doesn't have every M1000 that he ever played. Federer doesn't have Sttutgart and Montréal, apart from Monte-Carlo and Rome. Nadal never won Shanghái, Paris and Miami.
Why are you hiding your djokovic hate with that nonsense? Ofc djokovic doesn't have madrid indoors and Hamburg because he was like 20 yrs old when those two events were held the last time at masters level.
@@arvidl5666 That's facts, not hating. It doesn't matter the age. With 20 he won Miami and Australian Open, he was fully capable of winning both of them.
@@sergiosarmiento4371 Yes, he won all M1000, and missed two Masters Series. But for some stupid reason, the ATP counts Madrid indoors like Shanghái, when they were played at very different conditions apart from the venue itself.
