Thanks for watching! Don't forget to come visit me on May 27-28th at Ironweld -> ua-cam.com/video/Tb33ULfKjjc/v-deo.html
This is exactly the type of content I find most useful as a hobby wargamer!
This! Love these sort of things
Started playing again after nearly 20 years since 3.rd edition and played five to six games so far. In my last game the difference between ruins and ruined walls had a big impact on the first battleround. Never thought about the difference in appearance, ruleswise it was totally clear to me. I have so much to learn and such a video is perfect for this.
Amazing video Trevy. I was thinking about using those standardized terrain layouts as guidelines for my own casual matched plays but I didn't know how to start with them. Thanks to you it was made way more approachable :D
loved the video. Back in the days of 3rd edition I liked the terrain random creation method: divided the table in 6 parts (2x3), throw 1D3 for each part, Alternate to place terrain 2 parts on your side and the center part on your opponets side. I worked great as part of the strategic set up to the game
Thank you! Waited for this!!
This is amazing! Coming back to slightly more competitive gaming, this is massively helpful
Thx for your content, love it
Trevy makes the most sense. Hopefully they listen to him for 10th.
Never realized you are in mass, I'm going to try to go to this event and check it out. I probably won't play because I don't think I could commit to both days but I would like to check it out one of the days
hell yeah; see you there!
Can you Put links to the different Terrain Formats in the description?
Hey is your Tabletop Simulator video still good to go if I wanted to share it with someone who wants to learn how to set it all up?
Great content on the different formats. It's a shame that tournament terrain is just so sad looking and not really very thematic. Of course that's difficult when you need terrain for a lot of tables.
Canadian PPT is best! Wooooo 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
ngl I'd be much more in favor of PPT if that system was in vogue
Don't forget Adepticon Format: An empty table
Which events use the "Canadian" player placed system? I'd like to read up on it. I've been resisting player placed terrain because of the center first placement problem even though a lot of the regional player base wants to use it, and I'd rather not reinvent the wheel creating a compromise if the work's already been done. :)
There are a bunch of them; Stud or Snotling is one of the most recent iirc
I've found on a few occasions that terrain can make a game more or less fun as well as effect it's outcome. I like my terrain as a mix of tightly packed areas with open spaces surrounding them, that way it allows for close range combat in tight areas as well as open battlefields
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only ruins.
I miss hills. 🙁
Hot take: I love love looove player placed terrain! Adding that layer of strategy makes the game just that much more dense and (provided there are a few tweaks) it feels very fair!
Def don't think it's perfect tho. I think we need some kind of central rule as to what goes in the middle. Cuz it can devolve into "I shoot, therfore crater in the middle" and "I melee, therfore ruin goes in the middle"
Floofy cat!
Player placed is the worst
All I know is that plauer placed is something cheeseheads try and take advantage of at our local shop.
Personally I'm not a fan of the tournament terrain layouts. They tend to be either too restrictive or end up with huge open spaces in the middle (and issue which has recently come up in our FLGS league). Personally I prefer what we always used to play under 4th and 5th, which is a large ruin in the middle of each quarter, two small ruins/trees at the ends of the short ends of the tables and two small buildings blocking LOS but sat either side of the central point of the table. Add a little scatter terrain. It works so much better than these weird disjointed table layouts, at least in my opinion.
Didn't you just describe the GW tournament layout?
@@aalagerwaard essentially yes, although they keep the open kill box in the middle of the table as I recall.
Player based terrain has no business being in 40k. I'd go as far to say any tabletop game, but I havnt played enough of them to know that for sure. What I do know for sure is that it's real dumb in 40k
