Building my Router Binding Jig | Routing Binding and Purfling Channels

- I'm ready to install the binding on my acoustic guitar. The first step is to rout out the binding channels. I need a jig to hold the router square to the body so I decided to build my own jig. I used some aluminum extrusion, some off the shelf parts, and some 3D Printed things to put this together. I feel this has all the best features of all the jigs on the market today.
This is the first prototype version. After using it and making any necessary changes, I will be offering a package containing drawings, dimensions, parts used, sources, STL files and everything you'll need to build this jig yourself. I'll be making that announcement when it is ready. The link will also be posted here.

You also could have put spacers on the bottom of the guitar holder to raise it enough to clear the minimum height of the routing jig.

Could you have flipped the router bracket so instead of the vertical section facing down it faced up?
Yes, that would have been a great option. It would go low enough that way.

That is so cool man! I spent a crap ton of money on one of the commercial ones. It’s cool that you have the ability and motivation to pause the guitar build momentarily to build the jigs. I think you’ve got a great prototype here!
Thanks man, I don't mind spending good money on certain things, but sometimes I just look at a particular line of products and I just can't justify it. Lol. This was one of them. I'm already working on some changes for the next version. I think it will be pretty sweet.

The constant tension spring is an elegant solution (also used by LMI on their binding jig) - but I found that a simple combination of rubber bands can also be used to provide just the right amount of weight relief so that the jig almost floats up and down at the level needed. My only issue with all of these vertical travel jigs - including the one I built myself (which almost identical to yours) - is that by design they're not capable of cutting at full depth when there's a relatively steep arch. It's not a problem with a full bodied guitar, but can be a significant one when routing around a Florentine cutaway on the back of the guitar (assuming the back also arches downward toward the neck). Thus in this area some hand work is still needed to make the channel around the cutaway meet evenly with the channels routed on the sides of the guitar. A binding jig that follows the sides of the guitar instead of the top and back overcomes this issue - but I only know of one on the market and thus far I haven't been willing to pay the asking price for it (but maybe that design could be shop made as well!)
Awesome design… fingers crossed that you have a final plan or units to sell in a few months, because I have a couple guitars in the works that I need a binding jig.

Thanks for the video. Most helpful. However, am I going mad,. or if you had simply turned the L-shaped bracket upside down [the moving bracket] you would have been able to use the original, I assume expensive,. mounting bracket. I don't think anything else changes by doing that, and with the L the other orientation, the bracket will not foul the mount before bit hits the guitar. PS love your mis-measure! My life is a perpetual cycle of mistake, correction, mistake etc.

I certainly could have done that. However, by eliminating that bracket, it brings the cost down though. Plywood is cheaper than that bracket. I returned the bracket.
What is the height of aluminium extruded 4T slots pipe and profile size?
Really cool - I definitely want to try this as I like binding on my guitar but I also like arm contours - I tried to cut the last one by hand but it wasn’t so hot!
One question - that little plastic donut you are using, what are they called?
I honestly don't know if it has a specific name. I just call it the donut. Lol.
Hey Jeff, you might have had the room with the initial base for the tower if you turned over the rack you have the router on over… yes?
It's possible. I thought about that a couple times but I feel like eliminating it was a better option. That original foot is expensive compared to the angled brackets and plywood.

The cnc hasn't, but I'm focused on finishing the acoustic guitar. I will get back to this one for sure. I ordered these v bearings from amazon, all of the other pieces I got from Mcmaster Carr. Except for bolts and screws.
Although you didn't use the extrusion base, id be interested in a link.

Great video. I'm a true McGyver too, so I really appreciate you making all the mistakes first so I don't have too. Are you by any chance selling the 3D printed donuts? I'm using a plumbing part for my current jig (which I'm going to update based on your jig), but yours looks to be more consistent.

Do you have an estimated cost of materials?
When I priced everything out, it was around $150 for these parts.
