Waking Hours is a masterpiece and it seems that everything Justin puts his hands on is GOLD. 1998, the Dels fresh off releasing Some Other Sucker's Parade,....flying high in the mainstream kept alive and thriving by dedicated Dels fans. The musicianship is superb. Each track nestles its way into someone's heart and echoes a bittersweet celebration of lyric and life.
Maybe because this is pretty much a "karaoke" gig - with only lead vox being live?!? Look closely: Amps not miked up, drums not miked up, some bass parts not matching the playing position, etc. Also there's no wind noise at all, although the weather conditions should've caused *plenty* . (Just to be clear: They ARE an excellent live band!)
They are a proper live band, I remember seeing them live in norwich 25 years ago. They played the night after motorhead played, and amongst their setlist, they did a brilliant version of ace of spades, which was as good as if not better than the orginal!! Random fact, my nan is in the video for nothing ever happens, about 4 mins in (true!!).
How did this happen? Your nan in the video not the song! I can still remember the impact the song made in 1989 due to its uniqueness and the social commentary of the lyrics. It stood out then and nothing has really sounded like it since in my opinion. The video accompanies the song very well too. Not sure who directed it but they did a great job. I saw them live in 2002 in Liverpool and they opened with 'Always The Last To Know', my favourite track of theirs. That line at the end where the twist in the tale of betrayal is revealed is one of the most arresting lines in music. It is apparently a favourite track of Stephen King due to its poignancy. The Waking Hours was a favourite album of mine in the summer of 1989 when there was a buzz about the band. This live rendition of Nothing Ever Happens from 1998 is excellent!
A remarkable song about human failings. I love the line "The Martians could land in the car-park and no one would care." I used to work in a terrible place full of the type of people who would just carry on working if a spaceship landed outside, and the slave drivers would say get back to work if you did stop and look. 🚀
Justin ( In my humble opinion) is an absolute genius.. He is on the same songwriting prowess as George Michael and Freddie Mercury.. He is a “ one off “ never to be repeated.. The mould was broken after he was made.
weird how this song ..and tbh no one learning .. ..the needle return to start of the song ....and go on like before and learn nothing and ..very song i got it years ago when first heard it .....
Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats Janitors padlock the gates For security guards to patrol And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink While the married ones turn on a chat show And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go And by five o'clock everything's dead And every third car is a cab And ignorant people sleep in their beds Like the doped white mice in the college lab Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed Just survive constant action replay Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs While angry from Manchester writes to complain about All the repeats on T.V. And computer terminals report some gains On the values of copper and tin While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs For the price of a hospital wing Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we all sing along like before Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock And we'll all go along like before And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Nothing underrated about this bank, just pure class. Great band.

One of the greatest lyrics ever written.
absolutely.
I loved Justin’s face and joy as he heard his voice expand over the crowd in the first line. Well done mate. This really is a masterclass performance.
Such a great underrated band. Love these guys so much.
played well in radios. More than Nirvana. But the name of band sounds odd and confusing.
How can a band sound this good, live, and outside?

That's it, now I know Justin is not human. No human can sing that well live.
A song of its time this. Magnificent.
1998, the year of the Mitsubishi extacy tablet. Great memories of being melted that year.
Perfect.

Studio recording music? Bit of an insult to the lads
