It didn´t go over so well even back then. I don't think ABC ever reran it, and I'm pretty sure it was excluded from the original syndicated repeat package.
I thought Dr. Welby was supposed to be a family doctor, not Sigmund Freud. He wasn’t a shrink, so why would he be trying to psychoanalyze the guy, instead of just referring him out to a specialist colleague? That would’ve been the professional way to handle this patient. But then again, I don’t remember the days of house calls.
Exactly. Because you weren't there. It was 1969 or 1970. Doctors kind of did it all - especially if they were good General Practitioners, like Dr. Welby. And MOST Doctors in 1970 would still be treating homosexuality as a mental defect, instead of trying a "Specialist" - which most likely didn't exist.
The episode of MEDICAL CENTER with Robert Reed who plays a man who wants to undergo sex reassignment surgery was positively progressive next to this depressing piece of indirect gay bashing!
Hi, Biff! What changed between 1973 (when the Welby episode aired) and the autumn of 1975 (when the Medical Center two-parter aired) was a lot of negotiation with the networks and producers, and a growing tendency to run LGBT-themed scripts past consultants from the Gay Media Task Force to get advice about how to make them more believable. Also, the declassification of same-sex desire as a mental illness helped (even if "gender dysphoria" was still on the books as a pathology, leaving trans people labeled as sick).
Progressive, if you mean what we see nowadays young children are convinced to change sex which causes mental anguish a couple years later when they want to change back.
@@Ezio_1907 Good grief, you transphobes love yammering about gender identity, even when it has nothing to do with the subject at hand. It's an obsession. Wonder why...
@@zzzbbbooo True. People are allowed to be hatemongering flaming bigots, expressing views that have done countless harm to individuals, families, and communities over the years.
Can you imagine that being shown now?

Wait, so what did the producer say of this episode later?
Ironic that in real life, Robert Young AKA Marcis Welby, was a depressed alcoholic with multiple suicide attempts.

@@stevencapsuto873 First and foremost yes it does, it completely does.
@@stevencapsuto873 And I speak from experience as an individual who as a young child has gender dysphoria which still affects me till this day.
Huh???
Wow. What crap
So it's a load of crap to help someone with mental health condition. This isn't about a phobia it's about abuse survivors.
@@Ezio_1907 abuse doesn't make people gay, and being gay isn't a mental health condition.
@@Ezio_1907 You're confusing this with another Marcus Welby episode, I suspect.
You weren't living during this time period, don't be so judgmental.

They got it right then. Sorry.
The medical profession defines what is and isn't a disease. Random assholes on the internet don't.
