What more can be said of this sensational duo, who turned out one superb song after another that really strikes a chord with so many of us; so sad that they broke up, a great musical loss.
Well shit! I used to listen to The Civil Wars often, I just recently started watching Nashville and I immediately thought that this song as well as Fade Into You sounded like The Civil Wars. Love their music style, it is so hypnotic.
I love both voices, but that high pitch the man carried, then brought it back down, is beautiful! Especially the TV show Nashville version, which is how I heard of this beautiful song.
LYRICS If I didn't know better, I'd hang my hat right there If I didn't know better, I'd follow you up the stairs Stop saying those sweet things you know I like to hear The horns are blowing louder, the bailiff's drawing near Why do I keep drinking Wasting my time on you? If I didn't know better, But, damn it, I do There's a hole in what you're saying I can plainly see you've a lover that's waiting But, baby, you're right here with me Oh you might as well be the devil, Keeping me out past three Well you're the one with that apple, So, baby, you can't blame me Oh, why don't you keep drinking? Give me one night with you If I didn't know better, But, damn it, I do Baby, I do Oh baby, you're right here with me Sweet daddy, you know I do
It was one thing to completely fall IN LOVE with this song while watching Nashville, but it's a completely different thing to find out that it's The Civil Wars singing it! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
+Caitlyn Smith So I just spent a lot more time than I probably should have looking it all up. The song was released as part of an album by The Civil Wars way back in 2009, but Nashville didn't even release its pilot until 2012. I dunno anything about the time it takes to produce a show, but I doubt it takes _that_ long. Even if he wrote it for Clare, The Civil Wars were still the first to sing it. Does that make it theirs? I'd assume so, honestly. And there goes 20 minutes of my life...
I was lukewarm on Nashville until the two actors started singing this onstage and it sparks a pretty big plot point, and all I could think was I AGREE. It being a Civil Wars song was icing on the cake.
John Paul White and Joy Williams are behind magic all over the place...This song...and 'Safe and Sound' (Hunger Games soundtrack), sung by Taylor Swift who HAD to have gotten some vocal instruction from Joy Williams because she's never sounded like that in any song. I've been a fan of them for a while now, but I'm also a fan of Nashville. Glad more people are finding out about them. They deserve the recognition.
Ever since discovering The Civil Wars via Pandora, I have felt that the Scarlett and Gunnar characters on Nashville are modeled after Joy and John Paul. Love this!!
The show Nashville had lost me until I heard this song, then it all turned around!...being a huge fan of The Civil Wars I not surprised to find that the song was written by John Paul White!
Love the 'Nashville cover' of this by Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio! I suppose had I heard this version first then I'd love this one better.. There is something soooo addictive about the Nashville cover! Both amazing though :)
Too bad there isn't another pair like that to give us new music. Enjoy what you get. Not a lot like this will be available now or in the future. Love what you get while you can get it.
Clare Bowen and Sam Pallidino sung the song. In an interview Clare mentioned that it was the first time Sam had sung falceto. Clare Bowen's voice is different than Joy Williams. Also the song was played and sung at a slightly slower tempo on Nashville
try googling their official website you could probably by their "Barton Hollow" album from their site. This song was also part of their set live at Eddie's attic in GA, which i know is a free promotional download from their site :D
Actually, Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio did a cover of this song. I think that they're both sound pretty similar. But, I agree that Clare and Sam did an awesome job :)
What more can be said of this sensational duo, who turned out one superb song after another that really strikes a chord with so many of us; so sad that they broke up, a great musical loss.
They're coming back! 😢
@@Foundsoul5 Not likely despite the effort of Taylor Swift. They did not end amicably. But we can hope.
I still miss The Civil Wars, so much!!!!!! They were sonic perfection ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The Civil Wars were actually the ones who originally sung the song. Nashville did the cover. Just giving credit where credit is due.
Winnie I didn't know that but when I heard it on the show I thought of this band! Both versions are amazing.
It was actually arum Rae who wrote the song

Well shit! I used to listen to The Civil Wars often, I just recently started watching Nashville and I immediately thought that this song as well as Fade Into You sounded like The Civil Wars. Love their music style, it is so hypnotic.
Man, JPWs' high range is incredible, doesn't sound falsetto at all. Damn them for splitting up.
his voice is so good. *chills+

I love both voices, but that high pitch the man carried, then brought it back down, is beautiful! Especially the TV show Nashville version, which is how I heard of this beautiful song.

This is a masterpiece...
this is not a cover, Nashville version is. John Paul wrote this song, and his voice is just amazing an so intense without being to over the top
+Caitlyn Smith No, The Civil Wars did not cover their own song. Especially since they probably wrote it way before Nashville was even on.

Rep from the people in their 40's. Yeah, that happened. Many more times than once.
Beautiful thing, this song.

I was lukewarm on Nashville until the two actors started singing this onstage and it sparks a pretty big plot point, and all I could think was I AGREE. It being a Civil Wars song was icing on the cake.

So love this song!!!!! And The Civil Wars. I can out this song on repeat and listen to it all day and night!

Clare Bowen and Sam Pallidino sung the song. In an interview Clare mentioned that it was the first time Sam had sung falceto. Clare Bowen's voice is different than Joy Williams. Also the song was played and sung at a slightly slower tempo on Nashville
