    "I'm striving to be middle class, but I don't know if I am quite yet." Boy, you spent $62 on a bottle of wine! If that isn't a middle class mentality, I don't know what is.

    • @Bedoyyk55
      @Bedoyyk55 7 років тому +323

    • @asphodelale
      @asphodelale 7 років тому +147

      Nah, middle class is more two-buck-chuck and boxed wine. $62 wine is 'first date/engagement' wine, not everyday drinking wine, for the middle class. (One has to be lower upper class before that becomes a reasonable price for getting-drunk wine.)

    The lady that was the software engineer or the unemployed couple I felt spent their money the wisest. The software engineer got a decent amount of grains with what she got, but the unemployed couple got the most fresh fruit and vegetables for the money. I can definitely relate though $150 in my house is used to feed four people for two weeks, and that is breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thankfully we keep it pretty simple with breakfast with smoothies or fruit or oatmeal, and lunch we usually just have the leftovers from the dinner if it didn't all get eaten the night before.

However, compare the price of all that pizza stuff to just store bought ingredients. You could cook up ten times as much food by doing it yourself rather than eating that predone stuff.

    • @shikaluv21
      @shikaluv21 8 років тому +20

      +cupnoodles201 Yeah, as someone who is wayyy under middle class, I would never dream of spending so much on a bottle of wine. In fact, since I live in a place where even "cheap" alcohol is super expensive, I don't buy it at all. Also avocados and asparagus (the only vegetables that guy bought) are the two most expensive vegetables you can buy where I live. Maybe the reason he doesn't feel middle class is because he has no extra money after he's done spending it all on things he doesn't need :P.

      +Kate Bonanza But the exchange rate always stays the same, no matter where you are, and no matter how inflated the country gets. For example, in the USA, a person can make $5000 a month. Then they spend $1000 on rent. In Russia, a person can make $500 per month and spend $100 on rent. It's the same thing, both people, no matter where they live, are paying 1/5 of their money towards their rent. It's just that the USA is more inflated. Bringing a $100 bill (€90.04) to Russia and asking a bank to exchange it is the same thing as only getting €18.01.
      Also, I don't know what the actual exchange rate between the USA and Russia (or Europe?) is. These numbers were just an example.

      Same for Japan. I spend roughly 20-25 USD a week on grocery, maybe 10 USD a week for other necessary stuff that I don't get often. Then once in 2-3 months I'd eat out once for another 15 USD. I feel like with 100$ I can buy more stuff than most people featured here. But maybe where they live, the cost of living is simply higher.

      I wouldn't have made the same spending choices as him, but then again mine would've been junk food probably because despite wanting to diet I would just go to candy town with $100 given to me since I'm already in a pretty solid/stable home situation(living with my dad since I'm attending the same university that he is a professor at, therefore saving shittons and still have good internet).

    • @nikkicaswell9541
      @nikkicaswell9541 8 років тому

      Ondrikus It depends highly on the job market and what requirements should be set in order to meet those positions. It is a fact that in America that jobs are decreasing in their value and giving unstable balance between the high school diploma/GED, type of college and university degrees and the job positions that are available to different standards. People who pursue for a bachelor's or master's may not be able to hold a job in the field they obtained the degree for and therefore are given limited options as to what they can pursue as a job in order to bring income. Add that debt and living expenses while working in a few job positions lower than you anticipated along with the increase of supply and demand results from the unstable economy and type of jobs that are being competed for.
      Not to mention that if you've worked at the same job or field starts to decrease in value then you will see the difference in how living expenses are contributed. This is where the saying 'everything goes up except for your paycheck' comes from.

    • @s0nicfreak
      @s0nicfreak 8 років тому

      +Ondrikus "things wouldn't become more expensive if people couldn't afford it." This is true of luxuries but not true with necessities. If food becomes too expensive for a person to afford, they don't just not buy food, they figure something out to keep buying it. Most paychecks don't raise at the same rate inflation does.

    It's hard to split up how I'd spend $100 at the grocery store, because I don't shop weekly most of the time. When I get my $ I go to Sam's and make big bulk purchases like meats, cheeses, eggs, tortillas. Maybe pasta if we're running low. But not their veggies or canned goods because I can find those cheaper elsewhere. usually comes to about $150-200. Package up the meat and freeze it. Then for canned goods, condiments etc, it's walmart because unless one of the grocery stores is running a sale it's cheaper that way. Usually somewhere around $20-$30 in canned goods for the pantry, maybe less depending on what's left from the month before. And then Sprouts because in general their fresh fruits and veggies have great sales and are cheaper than a lot of other places, so I'll stock up on fresh stuff that's on sale, especially apples because they're my 15 year old son's favorite. They're also great for their bulk foods. Granola, and rices. And then sometimes we'll grab a little bit of our favorite candy. But altogether for a family of 3, for the month, I spend under $400.

      Don’t have kids if you can’t afford them. It’s putting unnecessary suffering on you and it’s not fair to bring human beings into a life that isn’t good to them from the get go. My rule of thumb: if you aren’t prepared to support a child for the rest of their lives w/ heavy medical bills, don’t have a kid - that’s the worst case scenario financial wise having a child. If you can’t afford the worst case scenario, you can’t afford a kid.

      Kalle Scope Yo i think you're judging people without knowing their situations, often people in a struggling family weren't struggling when they had their kids but have either 1) underestimated how much a kid costs you (a lady in this video even spent half the 50 on kids products like dipers) or 2) lost jobs or lost positions in jobs.
