In the UK this was used for the theme to a documentary about HMS Ark Royal and the men serving on her back in the 1970's, it was a big hit with this tie in.
The older I get, the more I appreciate Rod Stewart. He is truly an exceptional artist. He has lasted all of these years because he is timeless. He can sing anything and sound incredible.
I personally witnessed this tour at a world series of rock concert at Cleveland Stadium with 5 major acts: Mahogany Rush, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep and then the headliner, Rod Stewart. I was not a fan, was forever after this show. What a stage presentation! It was truly a real eye opener for the whole bunch of us. This tour broke him into the big time there after/thanx
Although I prefer Rod's earlier work, this was a huge track in the UK. I didn't realise just how many US soul stars he had playing on the album. Booker T, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Al Jackson made up the band Booker T and the MGs. Apart from having hits like Green Onions and releasing a string of great records, Booker T and the MGs acted as the house band for Stax Records in Memphis, backing a host of soul greats on that legendary label. Originally written and recorded by the Sutherland Brothers, 'Sailing' wasn't written as a romantic song, but in reference to a spiritual journey through life on the way to eternal life with God. So the gospel feel is fitting. Rod didn't initially want to release this track as the lead single from the album, preferring one of his own compositions. The label got it right in this instance though.
The two years since The Faces' Oo La La album has really been a change for Rod Stewart. The same thing happened to other great UK artists like Dave Mason after moving to L.A., and becoming more middle of the road with the music. I'd rather go back to the days when Ron Wood was in the band, with rowdy rockers like "Borstal Boys".
No question this is a monster hit by a quality artist , even though it’s been appropriated by the ‘other’ football team in Glasgow 👀.. I forgive the song and its singer .. it’s that good 👌 👍🏴
.."Sailing" was written and recorded by the Sutherland Brothers - a duo consisting of Gavin and Iain Sutherland - in a June 1972 session, best known as a 1975 international hit for Rod Stewart. ... "Sailing" was recorded by Rod Stewart for his first album recorded in North America rather than Great Britain: Atlantic Crossing, which was recorded April - June 1975 at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio with Tom Dowd producing. The first single from the album, "Sailing" was an international hit, notably in the UK, where it was number one for four weeks in September 1975. It returned to the UK chart in 1976 and, with less success, in 1987. "Sailing" remains Stewart's biggest single hit in the UK, but was not a top 40 hit in his newly adopted US homeland. Rod Stewart is a great LEGEND in music, and is ...Sir Rod STEWART!...God bless you Rod !...
This is a cover of the the original Sutherland Brothers song- written by them and not by Stewart as people tend think. Their version is more original with the drum taking a more prominent stance - worth a listen to.
This was used as a theme for a reality series on UK TV about the crew and ship of HMS Ark Royal and as such was inescapable in my childhood. Pretty much a sell out move that killed his credibility. Then you had his disco dalliances before re started doing somewhat good things again before he lapsed into full on crooner!
This just some soupy pop shit ! Listen to the original by the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver ! So much better than Rod .The Mod and his Shitty Covers While you’re at it Check out “ Reason To Believe “ by The Youngbloods! Blows Rids version out of the water
I can't think of anything positive to say about this track at all. Very plodding and repetitive when you look at it closely and it doesn't really do much past the main theme and concept. All together, quite yawn inducing.
A bland, soppy, not to mention overly sentimental ditty. Massively overplayed here, largely due it being used as the theme to a (essentially) reallity show..
Can't believe that there is anybody out there who did not know this song.

The most played song on radio in Norway, 1975. I was 9 years old then. OMG, 50 years ago!
This song was the sountrack to a slow dance with a girl that ended in the first time I kissed a girl, somewhere in the seventies.❤
Oof... this takes me back... I remember this being #1 on the UK charts... wow almost 50 years ago and sounding great.
Early Rod, like early Elton is amazing!!

This is "simply" the most famous Stewart song. He sings in all concerts since then.
They played this on the tourist boat on Loch Ness .. seemed fitting
First kiss is the Deepest !!
Good track and the next year he would put out that monster album Night on the Town. Rod was hot in the seventies.
If you liked this then I would recommend Stewart's "Seems Like A long Time" or Van Morrison's "Brand New Day". They all have a bit of a gospel vibe.

I see a lot of posts dismissing this track. Yiz haven’t swayed to this one with a tight squeeze and it shows.
This reminds me of Christmas on Amelia Island.
Beautiful
The epitome of your parents music. I felt that way aged 9, upon its release, and bugger all's changed in 50 years!
Falls way short of the original by The Sutherland Brothers IMO.
Used on TVshow with military ship.....
yes HMS Ark Royal the last fixed wing big Flat top in the RN
Play the original from the Sutherland Btothers who wrote it and its the best version

This one rivals Mull of Kintyre by Wings for sentimental dullness.
🎯 👍
The original by the Sutherland brothers is much better 😊😊
Wrong sailing for thumbnail, you should the Christopher cross one
That's what I thought at first... But he DID listen to Rod Stewart's Sailing 30 seconds later...
Fixed- ty ty :D
How about Hot Legs also by RS. This a bit forgettable for me. S’ok.
Don't remember this tune at all. A gospel themed melody. This type of song would close out a folk music concert.
His 'mandolin wind' still awaits your ears... This album was the beginning of his downward slide.
Crud.
That's the word! 😉
@@Owlstretchingtime78 haha! It was either that, or "bilge" 😆

Dull yacht rock, boring.
This isn’t yacht rock, the other sailing is

Bloody awful and no mistake! 😐
you clueless read up on the song
Amusing that this song would trigger a person. 😂
@@brucedillinger9448 Triggered... not sure what you mean, but ok. I/we were asked what we thought of this song, and so I gave an opinion.
