On the piano is the co-writer of the song, Toby Gad. Just to let you know, the other co-writer of the song, BC Jean, was the first to sing the song as well as the person the song came from. She had just broken up with the man that she loved. Per Toby, they played it for Beyonce one day and she really wanted to sing and use this song, and the rest you say is history. Angelina and Toby have been working together for a while now and are creating new music for her to sing. They teased a song at a special event called Bad Valentine and it should be coming out within a few months. This collaboration is awesome! The Piano Diaries is Toby's project of other singers singing his most famous songs. Angelina of course is singing this song made famous by Beyonce.

Even though we know what to expect from Angelina, she never fails to totally commit to the song, the lyrics and unapologetically dive into the emotions that BELONG in the cover...I wasn't familiar with the song, but watcher both a video of Beyonce performing it at an awards show, then a blk/wht video...bottom line, Angelina made this her song, her feelings; so simple, a piano, cello the mic and great acoustics in that cathedral...all the little details to which she gives attention were addressed...and that voice, THAT VOICE!!!

This Toby Gad project/album involves eight of his best songs for which he has selected new, lesser known artists to re-interprete the music. So, it's actually not intended to be a "cover" but an original interpretation of the words & music by a new person. In addition to this 'Diary' version, there is an official video version, more upbeat tempo for radio play, both produced by Gad.
"If I Were a Boy" is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and originally performed by Jean in 2008.[1] The song gained international attention the same year in a version by the American singer Beyoncé, from her third studio album I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Jean and Gad also handled its production alongside Beyoncé. Now Toby Gad was working on the piano diaries project and asked angelina to sing it for him. He plays the piano next to her in the church and adds a chello player. Toby didnt ask Beyonce' to sing it cuz Angelina's version is much better than Beyonce'. So its not really a cover when the writer of the song asks you to reinvent the song and plays the piano for you also? Its team work ?
