Prawns and Shrimp ARE two different things. Both animals have 10 legs, but prawns have pincers on three pairs of legs, while shrimp just have one clawed duo. Shrimp are also more flexible than prawns due to their flexible shell structure, whereas prawns have overlapping segments and less mobility.

Prawns and shrimp are certainly two different but very similar species.
People however, depending where they are from, call them one or the other interchangeably often based on size.
I have caught very large shrimp on the Gulf coast of Texas in the 6-8 to a pound range and people often call them prawns. I assume that a few people think that they are the same thing and prawn or shrimp simply designates the size.

My best friend's daughter moved to London from New Orleans for a teaching position. She loves it and is enjoying her new life, but sincerely misses the food!!! When she comes home for visits all she wants is Mama's home cooking and when anyone visits her they bring her Zatarain's, Tony Chacherie's (both seasonings), and Community Coffee. In case you don't know...red beans and rice are a staple in the Gulf South and traditionally cooked on Mondays because Monday was the day all the Mamas did the washing. You could put on a big pot of red beans, let it simmer all day, and get all your washing done without worrying about watching the pot!! These days, of course, you can have it anytime, but Monday is still the tradition.

If you don't know, brining chicken in salt & spiced water/buttermilk overnight, then seasoning, letting rest, then frying will give you moist, delicious chicken any time. I have noticed that some chicken in the US isn't as good as it used to be. This brining will help a lot, if you try at home. I do all of the above, but sous vide the chicken, flour, then flash fry just to get the coating because I'm terrified of big vats of boiling oil.
If you can get cornmeal, you can make cornbread. So many good recipes online. Best in a cast iron pan (mine belonged to my great grandmother!), but simple ingredients. Butter, milk, sugar, salt, baking powder, eggs, cornmeal, flour, and a couple other "staple" ingredients. Just follow the instructions and enjoy!

    Prawn vs. Shrimp
    Diffen › Food › Seafood
    PrawnShrimp
Prawns are larger in size, and have larger legs with claws on three pairs. They have branching gills. Shrimp are smaller, have shorter legs and have claws only on two pairs. Their gills are lamellar, i.e. plate-like.
Prawns and shrimp are both decapod crustaceans i.e. that they have exoskeletons and 10 legs. They can be found in salt water and fresh water all over the world, typically swimming in search of food. Both shrimp and prawns tend to stay near the ocean floor. They also have similar flavors, and come in a wide range of sizes from minuscule to quite large.

I don't think size is the difference. In Thailand, the Thai shrimps can grow to the size of Maine lobsters. On average, they're the size of typical prawns but still shrimp. I'm not sure if that's why there's so much confusion in the rest of the world on the differences.

Louisiana hot sauces are typically vinegar based. Crystal, Tabasco, and Louisiana Hot all are. Since vinegar (or malt vinegar?) is a popular condiment on fries in the UK from what I've heard, I wonder if Brits would like one of those sauces on top of fries or other things for that vinegariness with a bit of heat.

I'm actually hyped because I've been subbed to them since they started and at the time only had 385 or so subscribers. It's SO cool seeing other channels I love like Kabir's here reacting to them now and for them to be getting semi-popular already (I don't want to jinx anything lol)
As I've said in several of their videos (especially these Southern food videos) food like this is "soul" food, or "hearty" etc. but they are usually made with very few ingredients or they are just seasoned to perfection. Simple dishes, executed to perfection, you get incredible flavors and textures. Food doesn't have to be complicated to be "life changing" as they like to say in their videos - it just has to be cooked with love and care. Also, I've said in this specific video of theirs - I hate fish/seafood so gumbo for me will either be pork or chicken (or other meats if you can find it) but gumbo can just be insanely flavorful. Oh, and shrimp and prawns are actually two different things, it has to do with the pincers on the little legs they have as they both have 10 legs I believe.

I love this couple! They are so cute and hilarious. When Andrew said he'd never knew shrimp could be so flavorful and Nicola said they'd been missing out, i cracked up laughing because of all the JOLLY videos I've watched, they make the same comment about spice and flavor, lol. We use the terms prawns and shrimp differently because technically they are not the same. They are used interchangeably (like sweet potatoes and yams) but anatomically they are different. Prawns tend to be larger than shrimp with three pairs of claw-like legs, while shrimp have only one pair. Prawns also have longer legs than shrimp. Prawns also can't bend their bodies like a shrimp can and they also reproduce differently. They are from different branches of the crustacean family. Most prawns species are found in fresh water while a smaller percentage of shrimp species are fresh water.

If you're serious about making gumbo, I recommend Alton Brown's method of making the roux. It's very used friendly for the beginner. The darker the roux, the better the gumbo. Veg needed is onion, celery and green bell peppers. Spice mix of cayenne pepper and black pepper, dry mustard, paprika, sage, cumin, bay leaves, thyme, and parsley. Any mild german sausage will work in a pinch. Chicken and shrimp is also pretty common. I think the hardest thing for you to find for authenticity is filé powder (dried and ground leaves of the sassafras tree). A good roux and bit of filé is the secret to gumbo.

Red beans and rice is easy. You just need a can of red kidney beans an onion, sausage. I use smoked sausage and of course rice. I make everything separate. I cut the sausage into bite size pieces and chop the onion and fry them together in skillet. I make rice in a separate pot and boil the beans in another pot. I know a lot of people use a lot of seasoning but I don't. I make it this to allow everyone to create their plate as they like. Just start with rice spoon in the amount of red kidney beans you want over rice and then add the meat mixture. Try it

If you cook, there's a couple of Cajun cooks you can check out on youtube . Old school Justin Wilson, and present day Charlie the cook Andrew's .Just a little FYI if you can't find the specific ingredients then substitute with local similar ingredients. Example if you cannot find andoullie sausage then use a local smoked sausage and a bit of red pepper. According to Justin Wilson the old time Cajun cooks developed there recipes by using what was available. You are never wrong for using what you have. Also the trick is to season as you go, rather than all at once. If you are cooking chicken and rice then you Season the chicken, you Season the rice and you Season the sauce. It takes a bit of practice to learn how much seasoning is needed in each step.

As a rule, Prawns are larger than shrimp and are actually slightly different anatomically though the flavor is pretty much the same. It could be difficult for a lay person to tell the difference once they were cooked and out of the shell so perhaps that is why we have the distinction. I have been a fan of cornbread since my childhood. My mom made it savory though I now make it sweeter and I use cake flour instead of all purpose flour so it is more tender and cake like. It is all good and I usually put butter and honey on the savory and just butter or nothing on the sweet.

Okay Kabir, now I’m hungry. 😂 The BEST cornbread is fried (it looks like pancakes) and you slather it in butter. I also like baked cornbread muffins that have corn and honey in them. Southern food, without a doubt, is the best food because of the seasonings used.

There is a difference between Creole style and Cajun style. Also, the initial layer is French, with a bit of Spanish from when they controlled Louisiana, and a heavy influence of herbs and spices, and cooking techniques and flavor profiles from the slave brought there from Africa, plus Caribbean influences as well.
Come to L.A. and let the folks there hook you up with street tacos, hotdogs wrapped in bacon and served on a bun with grilled onions and pepper, and fresh tamales, huevos rancheros, menudo, maybe a little lengua or cabeza if you are daring. Fresh handmade tortillas. Wash it down with some jamaica or tamarindo.........

Also, keep in mind that there are two different versions of most of the Louisiana dishes. There’s the creole version and then there’s the Cajun version. The spices are a little different and the other ingredients are different, so do you keep that in mind. It looked like in the video they were eating Cajun-style Gumbo. But I can’t tell for sure.

In America, generally, what are called prawns are always much larger. Like Santa Barbara spot prawns, which are huge. The smaller sizes we call shrimp. That said, they are actually two different animals.
As for Andouille sausage, that indeed would probably be hard to find in England. A smoked sausage or kielbasa or perhaps a Spanish style chorizo would probably be the best substitutes.

I’m in Lafayette Louisiana. Red beans and rice is a simple but flavorful food. We season it with onions, bell peppers, celery, and maybe some garlic. Our sausage is also seasoned so we don’t need to add more seasoning. Having it with a slice of cornbread adds a hint of sweet with the savory and spicy beans and rice. We can sometimes make the cornbread into corn muffins with also works.

I'm not sure if they're available in your area, but it would be worth looking into. They're definitely pricey, but they're a great option for trying popular famous foods from the states!

Kabir, Another thing to consider is a real New England clam bake not a clam boil or lobster boil but it can also be called a lobster bake but really any combination of local shellfish and corn on the cob and sausages and other stuff like potatoes and onions anyway the most accurate way would be to look up a Cape Cod Clam bake and if it tells you to do anything other than digging a trench at the salt water beach near the water and putting in red hot rocks and covering with fresh seaweed then the food then more seaweed then covering with heavy canvas and steaming the food. People will say you can do it in boxes and pots you can but it will be a poor excuse fake part of the flavor is the minerals and sea salt in the sand and fresh seaweed permeating the steam and the food you only get that if you do in a trench in the ocean sand. There’s probably a lot of places you could do this in England and film a Kabir Considers Clambake

5:13 Kabir, you could make Cornbread it's not hard. The recipe is on the round cylinder package of Quaker Cornmeal. Quaker is the brand. There is white cornmeal and yellow cornmeal. I like the yellow. It's not expensive around $2 for 16oz.

@@kabirconsiders It's easy to make. You can make cornbread in 11" x 9" glass or metal pan with just a spatula and a single measuring cup. You can't mess up cornbread. Just mix the ingredients in the pan with the spatula. I've made cornbread at least 500 hundred times in my life.
If you want perfect cornbread you'd need to dirty about 6 different bowls, measuring instruments and pans.
Also, if you become interested in making cornbread there are molds you can use to make them into shapes. The historic and iconic cornbread mold was made of cast iron by the company Willet in little ears of corn (eight to the mold). I have two Willet molds and also two cast aluminum molds. The aluminum molds are little fish. If you like cornbread crispy then use molds. I bought all the molds at thrift stores for a pittance since the molds are 50-60 years old now.

.I don't think England has corn meal. My Aunt married a man from London and he said it's just not there. It's not corn flour or corn starch. It's different and I don't think you will be able to try it over there. He said that people in London just don't spice the food. I love to hear him tell the difference of the two countries. My Dad had to go to London and Ireland and he said the food was lacking. He was in London during the hoof disease scare so no beef. He won't eat lamb/mutton so fish for a week got old. He was starving for beef when he got home. Him and his co worker went to a restaurant, and they had a if you finish the fish dinner you got something. They both not only finished the meal, but were still hungry. He had broke a rib right before the trip and was hurting. He couldn't believe he could get what we call Lorotab pill over the counter. Here people will lie and steal for these pills. He was very happy he could get them. They were low dose but he doubled up. He has back problems and here his usual dose was 7.5 so he was happy to be able to get some relief. He had to go on this trip, and this man went to work right after he had a heart attack. He was in his office fixing to hit the road when the lady stopped him and told him he looked bad. She found out that he thought he'd had a heart attack so she called my mom. He wouldn't take a ambulance so my mom took him. He was in the hospital a week and out of work almost 9 months. The doctor messed his leg up when he put the stint. We are white but my dad's leg was blacker than any black person we know. His buddies told him since he was black then he could really be their brother. He broke his arm at work and yup the job took him to the hospital after he had drove their rig through Atlanta traffic. He said changing gears was hurting his arm. My dad is a tough man. We finally talked him into retirement at age 70. He has really went down since retirement, but we try to keep him busy. It's hard watching your hero get old.

Gumbo is not difficult to make. You don't really NEED a specific (usually andouille) sausage. Just about any smoked sausage will do. Something like a kielbasa would be fine. The hardest part is getting the roux right. If you take slow and pay attention to it, it's not difficult.
