Yes, I find that amazing, too! Students will use the Internet to find information anyway, we might as well teach the difference between a reliable and an unreliable source. 😌📖
There used to be an order of the Golden Dawn here in Australia. When the former leader passed away almost his entire library was purchased by a local book shop. Through them I was able to obtain about a dozen rare printings of authors including MacGregor Mathers, Crowley and A O Spare.
I got my copy of Regardie’s Golden Dawn one snowy day in 1968. I was 13. It’s been one of my favorite subjects all these years. I’ve read many books on the history of the society, and one of the very best is ‘The Women of the Golden Dawn” by Mary K. Greer. If you haven’t read this one, you’ve got to check it out. Reading this book made me understand what wonderful people were involved, both women and men. It really was a gathering of wonderful minds and souls brought together by the great eternal mystery! So many fabulous authors, artists, actors, and others all involved in a quest for truth and magical knowledge. The very Gods themselves must have brought them together at that certain moment in time. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Great video. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn stands out to me among such groups as allowing female members from the start of their tradition. Even the humdrum, typical Freemasons in my location (the southern part of the US state of Georgia) are still segregated by gender, and it's 2021. From my experience, in this area, men are members of the Scottish rite or York rite or Prince Hall lodges and women are usually members of an Order of the Eastern Star group, even though supposedly that tradition is open to anyone.
Just wanted to say I love your videos! As a practitioner I feel there has always been a lack of videos with depth like this on less pop culture occult concepts and traditions like the golden dawn. Plus you give really accurate unbiased information which is also rare online.
I always learn something from your videos, even on topics that I think I know a lot about! I love that. My introduction to Western Esotericism was when I picked up a copy of Israel Regardie's The Golden Dawn. Which was quite overwhelming at first, as you can probably imagine. But I've been working my way through it for a couple years and it's found a special place in my heart.
I very much appreciate the contrast and comparison between GD and Freemasonry. As a Freemason, it’s interesting to see how much our Craft has influenced everything from college fraternities to esoteric orders. That said, I know a number of esoteric Masons who themselves take inspiration from Wicca and GD and use that influence to utilise Masonic ritual for magick during meetings, with or without the implicit participation of the other brothers present. Lodges are very diverse groups of men and not every Mason is interested in “magick” writ large. These esoteric brothers believe that if they treat the ritual with enough reverence and gravitas, the initiatic rituals can and will be transformative for the candidate regardless of their own intention. I only bring this up to underscore how much reciprocity there is in the influence between Freemasonry and the Golden Dawn and vice-versa. Excellent video! Thank you so much for making this.
After the peresection from the Catholic church of the Ancient Mysteries, the wisdom of the ancients went underground. Freemasonry became the most sophisticated repository of this ancient wisdom veiled within the external symbology of medieval guild stonemasonry and ritually of the allegory of solomons Temple. The composers of the Rites and Degrees of Masonry were some of the most brilliant and brightest of minds and freemasonry therefore became the perfect system of initiation to be a template for other orders for centuries.
Thank you for this video, Angela. It was very interesting. I have been practicing druidry for ten years now, but the Golden Dawn has long intrigued me as well. It doesn’t hurt that one of my favorite poets, Yeats, was a member, but their theory and practice is interesting enough on its own merits. Do you think you might do a follow-up discussing more of the beliefs the order held and materials that they utilized? Do you know of good resources where I could learn more?

@@sonder152 Those he learned from Jack Parsons during the time they performed the Babalon Working. Sara Northrup also plays an important part. She joined as a teenager along with her older sister Helen. From 1941 to 1945 she had a turbulent relationship with her sister's husband John Whiteside Parsons, a pioneer in liquid-fueled rocketry and head of the Pasadena O.T.O. I love the golden dawn system the most but I also love Crowley and his system and I will never forget how Crowley viewed them after his initiation so I therefore found a more integrated approach to incorporate them together with their better aspects that resonate with me most and use that in my practice and as a practitioner myself I find I channel Crowley a lot and have found his insights to be most interesting.Another great video Angela thanks.🔥🤟🏻

The trouble I have with groups like this as a category is that you have to be initiated before you can find out if you want to be a member. That always sets off my skepticism.
Not anymore- happily, Crowley published much of the Golden Dawn Initiation material over a hundred years ago in his Equinox series. Israel Regardie published them in his Golden Dawn books in the 30s, and some older material in The Complete Golden Dawn System Of Magic.
Strictly speaking, the SRIA is not a Masonic Order but a Rosicrucian Society which only recruits Freemasons. The grade structure of the GD is that of the SRIA although there are Masonic influences. The officers and their stations bear little resemblance to neither Masonic Lodges nor the SRIA.
Great video! Hermeticism was my first step into spirituality and the occult and am still a practitioner. Would you mind doing a video on the PRS (Philosophical Research Society) founded by Manly. P Hall? Thank you! 🙏🏽🖤✡️
By the golden dawn, you mean the Fascist political party, sure, but the Hermetic order of the golden dawn didn't survive into the 20th century and splinter groups all disintegrated before the 20s.
SRIA London has a wonderful UA-cam channel with some videos being better than others. They have some great stuff though especially on the history of Rosicrucianism and its evolution over time and integration into post-Master Mason Rites and Orgs
@@Sir_Triggerz no worries :) the SRIA gave birth to the Golden Dawn's curriculum which then went on to inspire dozens of magical Orders which you can look up on Wikipedia from Crowley's A.'.A.'. to Paul Foster Cases' BOTA. The SRIA also birthed the scientific giant that is The UK's Royal Society where much of modern physics was first funded and demonstrated. If you want book suggestions on Masonry specifically lemme know
Speaking for myself, it is the alchemy, scrying, astral travel and the Tree of Life presented as a sphere that are the more valuable nuggets from that system. The Tree of Life as a sphere has far reaching meaning and applications that I do not think they fully explored or were completely aware of and this may be the most interesting of all concepts related to that system.
Very interesting of course Israel Regardie wrote 'The Golden Dawn'and later 'What You should know about the Golden Dawn'both very interesting but Regardie wasn't actually in the GD itself rather a successor the Stella Matutina.Although the SM was in the GD tradition it would be a bit like a person saying that they where born in the USSR when they where born in Moldova in 2001!
Regardie was a member of the SM, but the rituals as given in the book are actually representative of the original order. If I'm not mistaken (which I admittedly usually am) Regardie had access to, and was privy to, the original order material as well as the Stella Matutina Material. He did, after all, study with Crowley for some time prior to his initiations into the SM.
@@ronpipes1988 There are numerous differences between the SM rituals and the GD rituals, including temple layouts and curricula of study. However, although numerous, they are mainly minor differences.
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is still in existence approved by Israel Regardie when its first Temple was formed in America then two Temples in the U.K. one in Greece but this last I think is closed.
@@WiseFool888 Not a problem. You're probably already aware, but they also have a website. It might be difficult to do a video on BOTA. Their inner order material has never been published and the order is obviously still in existence. Some of their original order material that eventually became the correspondence curriculum has been published as well as some of the history behind the formation of the order. The Fraternity of the Hidden Light is a branch off of the BOTA order, and their are a couple of Thelemic orders that have BOTA in their background and lineage as well.
@@ronpipes1988 yes one of the members of my previous order was still a current member in BOTA he was so mysterious and wise. I never enquired about it though with him directly, never felt the urge then 🤫🌞
Hi im irish Catholic raised and looked into this out of a hobbie as I like to look at old history ...it just so much of it seen as taboo in this country
Dennis Wheatley used to write about how the most powerful occultists had the grade of Ipsissimus - that was a Golden Dawn thing, huh? Wonder who ever claimed it! The order seems to have been quite short-lived considering it's fame
Pretty important heads up to anyone interested in the A.'.A.'. (Aleister Crowley's branch off of the Golden Dawn, after he helped bring down the original): as of a few years ago Bill Breeze's A.'.A.'. lineage was declared by his student (the late James Wasserman) to be the only A.'.A.'. (the declaration is public and on UA-cam in a video called "In the Center of the Fire: A Modern History of the O.T.O.") that is recognized as legitimate by the OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis). Bill Breeze is the head (OHO, Outer Head of The Order) of the OTO and the head of the A.'.A.'. after this clever coup. Why does this matter? James Wasserman was a militant Trumpist, a Jan 6 sympathizer, a man who had over 30 members from all 3 Triads of the OTO make formal complaints about his conduct, a man who posed for pics with known far-right figures Milo Yianopoulous and Roger Stone and is considered by dozens of Thelemites to be a fascist (which should make one reflect on the views of the entirely silent Bill Breeze). When the declaration was made the left leaning OTO head of another A.'.A.'. lineage named David Shoemaker was forced to disband his lineage which was (at least in my circles) the most popular at the time. His video I mentioned before that's on UA-cam uses psychological guilting techniques to harass those of other A.'.A.'. lineages to join his. He broke his oath to not bring politics into Lodges by doing little else but talk politics and in my mind and dozens of others he was a straight up fascist (not a racist, but a far-right authoritarian without a doubt). Dr. Justin Sledge of ESOTERICA agreed with me on this point as did Marco Visconti. I've left the OTO and almost all of Thelema behind after learning more about it (I still consider myself a Thelemite but it's a Thelema without any Crowley adoration). If you're looking for a GD inheritor the A.'.A.'. is not the answer. So what to do? Solo practice is likely the best answer. All the material is public. For a while the Open Source GD was operative but nowadays no group I've encountered is dedicated to The Work and is more interested in power, money and prestige. The best option if you're going to find a group is likely the source of the GD which is the SRIA. While you have to be a Mason (and therefore male in the US at least since they are only just beginning to accept the United Grand Lodge of England's acceptance of The Order of Female Freemasons) the SRIA is probably your best bet. That or BOTA especially if tarot is really up your alley. Another heads up: I strongly advise against involving yourself with anything to do with the OGD as I've met Martin Thibeault and he openly declared himself an Ipsissimus, tries to "collect" as many Orders as possible and charge people for access to all of them. He is very focused on money and tried to get me and other friends not even in the occult community involved in a very obvious carpet-pull crypto scam which he flew out to Dubai to help organize. The people, like him, were intended to make a bunch of money while everyone else lost everything. It was structured like Bitconnect with referral perks and everything. I'm not even anti-crypto I just know sketch when I see it. This man does not give the vibe of a true seeker nevermind an Ipsissimus. Those involved with him are: Pat Zalewski, Dr. Tony Fuller and if I remember others I'll edit this post. Everything mentioned above is meaningless distractions. Focus on your Work. You have everything you need inside you and at your fingertips to live your True Will and aspire to the 10°=1 of Ipsissimus (which in my view is not one person but The One in a Neoplatonic sense... It Is. Anyone declaring themselves to be The One is only a part living in the delusion of Daath (if they've even climbed that far).
A history i had not herd before. I was taught it was a branch of the RCo and had nothing to do with masonry other than some of its founding members were also masons.
You were supposed to say Austria, to which I reply, ah well, go'day mate, let's put another shrimp on the barbie and then you say, let's not, and then I awkwardly pull my head back into the limo.

Not intended as criticism but are the video cuts purely stylistic or necessary edits? It seems to unnecessarily lose a lot of natural flow with cuts being so frequent, often every second or two.
Thanks for the video. I’ve been trying to do some cursory research on the order, but Google/UA-cam thinks I mean the Greek Nazi Golden Dawn instead. Oh well.
Ha! How 'bout dem Apples! All along id heard (even read) the GD dismantled due to Israel Riguardi's making the system public...as the saying goes the plot always thickens. Great vid Doc! Ill be making more lasagne this week...ill save you a plate Angela. Have a great week!
Which order involves summonsing a skeleton spirit with black, red, and white robe colors and talks about getting a lock on your D.N.A. i was forced into it in the early 1980s...After being inducted i met some high level political and powerful people in the U.S. Government.
Hi. I bought my Golden Dawn book in the 1990's. Was really into Robert Anton Wilson then. My 1st introduction to numerology. Huge massive complex subject I know almost nothing about, and this is just an observation. Things are assigned a number once given a name. That name can be broken down and reaganed to find out other meanings related to the origin idea. All things. To me over time it looks like we are trying to makes sense of computer code creating our reality in which we live. Decoding the machine langue from inside the story itself... Which would be a self crating manifesting A.I. machine endlessly discovering itself. Take care. I am racist as F.
It's a shame how many of these orders split up from disagreements and infighting. In my humble opinion , why did they not put the matter before a higher authority of those not of this realm . The secret chiefs , ascended masters or the tarot . Many shakers would find the answers in the good book and they would use that as the authority. The Tibetan oricles would welcome the spirits to give them answers. I'm an occultist my self and deciding whether to break into small groups or the continued curriculum should not have been something they couldn't solve even if putting it to a vote was too crude , and I can understand how it could be. I would have woke up Crowley and had him on a black mirror video chat before splitting up the band hahahahaha
Well, most likely because they put the teachings together themselves and there were no higher mystical authorities to kick their butts from the astral realms. It would also seem that none of the members had occult powers strong enough to subdue the rest of the members. Interesting ideas, weak magick 🤷♂

The Golden Dawn is still going very strong. I suggest people interested in this to research a bit more into it as there are active temples.

@@thishandleistacken thank you
@@Sir_Triggerz no worries :) the SRIA gave birth to the Golden Dawn's curriculum which then went on to inspire dozens of magical Orders which you can look up on Wikipedia from Crowley's A.'.A.'. to Paul Foster Cases' BOTA. The SRIA also birthed the scientific giant that is The UK's Royal Society where much of modern physics was first funded and demonstrated. If you want book suggestions on Masonry specifically lemme know
I have been curious about this order ever since I learned that Bram Stoker was part of it
glad to have satisfied your curiosity
Urban legend I'm afraid. Bram Stoker was never a member.
I loved this, but you forgot to mention Crowley's involvement in the downfall. 🙂
it wasn't mention as a primary event in the academic sources
Speaking for myself, it is the alchemy, scrying, astral travel and the Tree of Life presented as a sphere that are the more valuable nuggets from that system. The Tree of Life as a sphere has far reaching meaning and applications that I do not think they fully explored or were completely aware of and this may be the most interesting of all concepts related to that system.
I think the most interesting is how Blavatsky articles discussed microcosm and macrocosm. Or the chameleon way or philosophy of idea theft.
I was waiting for you to mention the Crowley connection, why didn’t you?
I am speculating if he is the cause of the order's birth in the USA
Please How does does one becomes a member out of Europe?
Very interesting of course Israel Regardie wrote 'The Golden Dawn'and later 'What You should know about the Golden Dawn'both very interesting but Regardie wasn't actually in the GD itself rather a successor the Stella Matutina.Although the SM was in the GD tradition it would be a bit like a person saying that they where born in the USSR when they where born in Moldova in 2001!
Thanks for sharing
Regardie was a member of the SM, but the rituals as given in the book are actually representative of the original order. If I'm not mistaken (which I admittedly usually am) Regardie had access to, and was privy to, the original order material as well as the Stella Matutina Material. He did, after all, study with Crowley for some time prior to his initiations into the SM.
Spot on, Kevin.
@@ronpipes1988 There are numerous differences between the SM rituals and the GD rituals, including temple layouts and curricula of study. However, although numerous, they are mainly minor differences.
