Bonham is a monster. Listen to how he plays just slightly behind the beat, thus creating a shuffle and groove that most drummers just can't emulate.
At age 21, no less
@@peacefulruler1 he put the LAID back sexy in Zeppelin!!! ♥
He was famous for that late snare drum. I remember hearing You Shook Me when I was 14, back in 1983. He’d hit the snare at the very last millisecond of the measure. It made head just about explode!
Him and JPJ knew that and even competed how far behing the beat they could play: ua-cam.com/video/qaa1axJ63Qg/v-deo.html .. about 10 seconds to 12th minute. it was both of them interlocking, the finest rhythm section there ever was ...
Yep,that's true.Always "behind the beat"
Most drummers usually are"on top of
the beat.
He keeps tempo with hi-hats,and his
timing is perfect.
This is the way many really good
drummers used to keep time in
the past,and very rare these
days.

That fkn bass, man. The whole 2nd album was about John Paul Jones, folks. Sure, there was more than him going on but only he was punching way above any class on it. The sound he got on this track is stellar, his work on Ramble On, c'mon, nothing before or after anywhere in the universe touches what he did on LZII.
The GOAT of rock bass, IMHO. He just adds such a great sound and so many subtle and funky nuances. I think the big difference between Zep and all other great hard rock bands is that they were all so funky! Lots of love for James Brown and Motown. Aerosmith in the 70s had that going for them also.
Yes, very punchy tone, especially here. Can tell he's using a pick as well, and sometimes hitting more than one string at a time, in unison with Jimmy Page's doing the same thing on the main riff (the D hanging in while he goes back to the E octaves).
Hi guys. This is my kind of crowd here! I left a comment out on the main about about Jones’ approach on this track. He and Bonzo had great copy cat ears. Someone would come up with a riff and the others would follow suit on it. In this case it was Jimmy who provided the main riff. It doesn’t hurt at all…having an accomplished, choirmaster-level organist (let alone polished session bassist) in your band. That said, Jones had great ears to copy this riff much the way Jimmy played it, with its open-ringing octave E and D notes. Zeppelin II as a whole is a record I’ve always referred to as: British Motown. Jones’ bass permeates this record deeply. From the Hammond B-3 organ playing on Thank You to the bass romp on Lemon Song. It’s all unique and untouchable playing. They really were “the ultimate unit.”
There's his isolated bass on Stairway as part of a similar video somewhere on YT. Was absolutely blown away by the fills/adlibs underneath and post-solo that I'd never heard in the final mix. Just astonishing playing
@@Dan-zq5wtwell he’s a keyboard/ piano player as well so all that knowledge and understanding of harmony, melody and inversions are there in his bass playing. JPJ is everything a you could wish for in a bass player!!!
Robert’s vocals during the middle part are funny as hell isolated
TIMBER!!!!!
@@brianwarner308 YEa 🤣
Great stuff! The perfect trifecta: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. (I would love to hear some Dark Side of the Moon deconstructed!)
I will try
The echo on the drums makes the rhythm really bounce.
I might be wrong, but I think a lot of that is Bonham sometimes playing a ghost note on the snare right after the backbeat.
Probably a room mic
That distortion on his voice towards the end is great. Great prooduction.

Whoa
Robert was chuckling at the very beginning
I always thought he coughed
Page really is one of the greatest rhythm guitar players of all time. You can argue about his lead work relative to Clapton and Beck, but he’s a way better rhythm player than both of them. I like his rock lead playing better also, particularly in his prime. I just listened to Cream Live and Clapton’s tone is wonderful, but all of his licks sound like his Crossroads solo. I almost think if you listen to Crossroads, White Room and Sunshine of Your Love you’ve heard all of Clapton in his Rock phase. Page is just so much more varied and creative.
As long as rythym playing goes Iommi or Blackmore are also big contenders for the top spot
@@johnxina5126 to me, Page, Blackmore and Iommi are the big 3 (then throw in Hendrix and VH)
@@Dan-zq5wt impeccable top 5. All 5 of them legendary guitar players with legacies worth rembering. For me Iommi is the best, perhaps not so much in being a step ahead and being superior to all the other greats but his influence, his influence is simply unmatched. I would say he pioneered the entire metal genre in it's entirety
u really cant argue about the lead work either lmao its so much better
@@zjah1 love Iommi but I don’t know about that. He’s great but I think he’s lead playing is a little one dimensional compared to some of the others in that Big 5. But he’s definitely clean and precise, and I agree that his riffs created a whole new style of rock

Both likely from Pete Townshend.
Pete Townsend and Keith Richards.
Jack Bruce and Clapton
I was actually reading an interview weeks ago where Jonesy was asked about Robert's guide vocal during the "way down inside" bit being left in because it just sounded cool. Hearing it now for the first time.
Page was given complete control over
music production.
One of his techniques for recording was
to really push the levels on tape, called
,"over saturation"which causes a very
nice distortion and compression,
that can only be done on magnetic
tape. The downside to this is that
the highly magnetized "tracks"
Will "bleed"into the layers of
tape below,thus causing a
distant echo to be heard,as
in this song.
They broke a lot of rules for
sure that were a"no no!"in
the business,and created
a whole new sound.
Just for the record the different algorithms used today,Saturation, various
ambience algorithms,etc can not and
never will create this type of "sound".
If magnetic tape is recorded "hot"
and then transferred quickly to
digital the bleed through doesn't
happen,as this takes some time.
Over saturated tape,blues, rock
go hand in hand together,as
does natural ambiance.
Hello, where can i get that information?
3 chord brilliance? At Julliard....................@@rock1710
Sounds like he double tracked the last part of the main riff.
3:08 Ladies and gentleman,John Henry Bonham on Drums!
There's a set of CD's that has a ton of rehearsals, out takes, isolated tracks, and original demo versions including this one to where he sings ''you need love'' instead of ''whole lotta love'', that used to be posted on youtube but now I can't find them anymore. If you like this, you'll love those. This doesn't scratch the surface compared to those recordings.
BONZO yelling always loved his drumming yells always hidden in the real track
This is so cool to hear these tracks broken down like this. Thanks!
Even Jones’ playing during the ambient part was interesting. You can’t hear it in the final mix but even if you could it would only add to the song. Also, there are some overtones that he consistently hits during the verse sections if you listen closely
Thank you so much fo this @
DLD2 Music! Hope we can get some deconstruction on Immigrant Song, Rock and Roll, Ramble On; and whatever else you'd like and enjoy! Thanks again! Cheers!
Well, just checked and noticed that Ramble On has been done already. You rule!!!
Ps: what about Achilles Last Stand???? Plz.... ;D
That was HEAVY!!!!!! ⚡
Check out how Jones would pluck (on the upstroke) open D as he’s fretting the D 5 on A. (I believe Jimmy does the same on guit) He’d do the same on the E part, hit open E while fretting A 7.
This thickens up the the whole sound of the riff. At around the 8:20 mark you hear him doing muted triplet gallops. I always wondered what this noise was for years, until this tape leaked out. He was a fine picker! God, Robert’s voice is something from another planet, really. These isolated tracks are very revealing, to say the least.
Listening to this song as a six year old on the car radio thinking this band is going places and hearing this. The four corners of talent.
Bonzo. 1948-1980 RIP
This is such a fucking magical song!!! …Soundtrack to my childhood!!! .Breaking it down makes me wanna steal stuff and make my own tracks become one!!! ♥☮♥
John Bongo Bonham!
how could anyone give a thumbs down to this!
I loved that, it's amazing to hear each of them separately. Everything here is powerful: drums, bass, guitar, theremin, vocals. And those moans from Plant, omg…my neighbor must have his ears pricked... 🤣
Also Page is scratching his guitar for some of the noises during the thermin part.
Yep, and he does that same scratching "trick" on the intro to "Black Dog."
It sounds like from a great horror movie 😈
Especially in rock music, we expect bass and drums to be complimenting each other. What makes this track and countless Led Zeppelin tracks so hard hitting is how perfectly Bonham plays with along the riffs Jimmy is lays down. JPJ is always laying it down but the groove created between the drums and guitar drives this song
I've always thought the guitar intro.riff sounds like a motorbike engine revving up. I think that even more after hearing the isolated track. 🙂
13:36 Page's guitar sounds like Godzilla
I believe that's his theremin
Never before noticed the sloppy punch-in at 19:09. All of this is very cool!
It just doesnt exist
Beautiful!!!
PAGE MAKES SOUND THE GUITAR LIKE A MOTORCYCLE AND AN UFO........a total monster.......
You can even hear Bonzo's snare buzzing
Hearing this, i can really hear bonzo follow page on that guitar riff! Legendary!
Could you do more Zeppelin? I’d love to hear all of the folk instruments on Gallows Pole
Nice stuff going on here!
Sounds like Page is catching a fret harmonic on the riff’s D note between the E maj chords throughout the song. Never noticed it before.
Play fretted D and open D together and slightly bend fretted D away from open D. You'll prob catch the odd harmonic as you go
I am not sure that this isn't an artifact from the algorithm/process that separated the tracks. I say this because I have listened to this recording since it came out hundreds of times and I hear it on the record, too.
The harmonic is there if you listen to the intro where it is only the one guitar. Also, notice that John Paul Jones is playing the fretted D along with the open D string like Page.
Bonzo the beast was a definite natural at the drums. he could play any type of percussion. I saw him live once, the guy was just amazing. he practically blew my mind away. I also like how he grunted like a bear when he played. he was such an influence to many drummers. RIP buddy!
A violent creep......................
God I gotta give this one to Plant. He is frigging absolutely monstrous on this.
John Bonham el millón batería de la historia
Robert Plant is/was actually one of the most underrated singers in this world, that powerful voice and vibrato, very unique.
I know this is a meme on here, but in no way is Robert Plant underrated. He's in the pantheon of all-time rock singers.
Underrated??🤣 He was well known as the greatest rock singer in the 70s
You should hear Steve Marriott doing it first!
sous estimé ? arrêtes tes conneries !!!

Canal sensacional!! Sou muito fã dessa página!
Watching a drummer say they've nailed this track and its not that hard...while playing in 4/4. Priceless
3:45 the call of the Bonzo
oh. hell. yes.
The gods
I heard Page detuned his strings and scratched them while pulling on them for parts of the middle section.

Why does the slide guitar sound so much quieter on the isolated track than on the finished mix? I can barely hear it whereas it seems quite prominent on the finished version.

That Snare is the loudest I’ve ever heard! I heard Bonzo had trouble in Clubs because he played too loud and they never heard that before.
It's been two years can you upload the entire albums with isolated tracks?
Jimmy had the most layering & tracks, then Bonham. Goodluck to Anyone trying to do a cover of this song.
How about deconstructing some CREAM songs
Wow, I'd never seen that picture of Bonzo before. I don't know why, but it surprised me to see him recording the bongos in a sweater and jeans on a sofa instead of in a cave wearing an animal skin.
Haha yea
When the Gods Walked on the Earth!
I've known about Jimmy Page's famous chorus effect by bending the fifth fret of the E string so that it's a microtone out of tune with A string, creating a long sine wave like.... well a chorus pedal really stands out here. He does it even on the short beats.

Early rock recording learning by numbers. Still cool. Take it or leave it, from a forever twenny-one year old 70 year-old. Stay free. Pelters welcome. 🍻 😎
K--@19:08 what was THAT?! :O IDK if i was just listening too loudly or too hard, but i nearly jumped out of my skin! Is that from the original track? Like, is that really there on the original, just pushed inaudibly back or down (or buried beneath the layers of everything else happening)? It was like a sword being sheathed into my ears for a split-second. I can't believe it's been there all along but i'm not sure i can tell what it is either.
I hear that blip too. Sounds to me like a snippett of a vocal on a previous take that didn't recorded get over with the new take. May have been a spot where they punched in the vocal at that spot and missed covering the previous take by a split second. You had to punch in manually off the console in those days. And being it was so short it wasn't worth trying to get rid of it. Today in software you can just highlight it and hit delete. Tape, not so easy.
nice drums on 00:00
Funky groove...

What did they used, an 8 track machine?
Led Zeppelin 2 still my favorite album.
Just one weak track, livin' lovin' maid she' s just a woman.
But there is "What is and what should never be, Ramble on and Heartbreaker" on it.
Funny, on the second chorus the voice compressor attack time is a bit to late.
can you do the who too 🥺
Yes, i will
It could be a separate channel--DLD2 and the Who too!
It sounds like a Dr. Seuss story :)
This song can play along with Fool in the rain Drums. almost the same main beat
Please do one for Led Zeppelin, When The Levee breaks.

It is strange that vocals doesn't have reverb in most of the song ..but drums have also in bass drum..this seems to work as a back and give to vocals space

"JIMBEEEEEEEERT!" 😳😳
Timber
Hard to describe the tone of the main guitar : not sure what amp he used for the orig. recording, I've read it was a Supra, but I really don't know. Whatever it REALLY was , I think it had more to do with the overall "tone" than the guitar. Just a THICK, bold tone - very bass-y , but enough treble to balance......?? That's what I hear, anyways.
can you do rock n roll by led zeppelin?
👽
That bass tone is aggressive AF
Actually, the guitar recorded was a Fender Telecaster...
What happened to Page plays Telecaster on all recordings and Les Paul only on stage?
He used a custom Gibson Les Paul here not a tele.
Can you do gallows pole, please?
