  • Step by step guide on replacing the axle (you could also upgrade to titanium axles) and all bearings on worn Speedplay pedals with a fair amount of play.
These pedals had done well over 20,000 miles with a lot of wet riding. Despite regular greasing they still needed some attention.
I paid around £11 for the replacement bearings and £15 for replacement axles on eBay - usually a few around from people swapping out to titanium axles. This tutorial would apply to upgrading to titanium axles too - I couldn't get hold of any when I completed this overhaul, without waiting for weeks for them to come from China - and I had the Fred Whitton Sportive imminent!
I got a set of stainless bearings here:

Many thanks for the video, very helpful. May anyone know where to source replacement springs for the cleats, or entire cleats for the X-series? There must be many of us that still use the speedplays but run out of cleats. Thanks in advance!

What are the problems while pedaling due to old bearings?

Do you know what the torque setting for the end bolt should be?

Try using the UA-cam playback controls to slow the video down if it's too quick for you.
