For those interested in learing more, "The Unattended War" is an unvarnished story of the U.S. Coast Guard's involvement in Vietnam. Authored by Christopher Malinger, it is available on Amazon. This video, although well done, doesn't tell the complete story.
I am going to try to find this. My father was in the coast gaurd in 68/69 I think or 69/70 he was in cat lo . I know it bothers him to talk about it. So I don't talk to to much about it.. Even though I speak to him daily. But i wish I could find more about his job. When he was there.
I just got started on Vietnam USCG 82' History. My little company makes 1/700 scale model kits of these lively, agile Cutters, so the amazing video is a great help from a model making standpoint.
looks like one of the old pointe class (duh) but before 1964, CG vessels were simply given a 5 digit number with the first 2 (or 3) indicating their hull size. There were 79 of these, their steel /alum structure structure and a/c cooled interior made them capable of missions of up to 5-7 days. These were the bad boys of Viet waters, since, unlike a Swift boat, the could do an extended patrol. Ex Coastie '71-75. :))
There films are pretty cheesy at times, but they give me a good idea (from Armed Forces point of view) of how these units got to South Vietnam, what they did, and what they used to do it with
Left Nam in 66 off of LST-509 onto a cutter then to Vung Tau, they had a fire mission or something but we were all told to stay below . Good chow though.
Market time was going on the same time as the Navy operation game warden was going on. Once again proving that the Navy had better names for their operations.
They gave our ship, the point comfort, stationed at point comfort,. Texas. To the vietnam, in 1967. It pissed me off, when I found out. She belonged to us.
Coast Guard played a huge role in the brown water Navy and operation Game Warden. Also Operation Market Time

How do I get a model?
Steve Bauman, TLAR Models 1/350 scale kits are available on eBay. I’m listing another 1/700 Point class set today.

I'm proud to have served in the Coast Guard. And it was in Vietnam that a CG cutter was the victim of friendly fire...

Many of those Coasties never made it back.
Most people didn't know it, but the PBR's of Vietnam had the highest casualty rate of all branches in the war.
7 K.I.A. about 59 W.I.A....about 8,000 out of 38,000 served in Vietnam at that time
When I was there in 67-68 there was a dusk to dawn curfew on the water ...

And yet they don't receive the purple heart. Why is that?
Coastguardsmen can receive the Purple Heart to the best of my knowledge.
They can. One of my shipmates got one. I was at the presentation of EN2 Keller.
Yes, we can receive it. And it's worth promo points
