About the instruments they are playing:
Yamaha KX5 Keytar
Chick Corea uses during this concert the Yamaha KX5, a master laptop keyboard from 1984. This is a 37-key keyboard covering a range from C2 to C5 with MIDI connectors permitting the remote stand-up performance of the keyboard instruments.
Yamaha TRB JP TDR
John Patitucci plays the Yamaha TRB JP II, a 6-string electric bass. The TRB series was born during the'80s to cover a wider tonal range, both in the low and high frequencies. The four-layer laminate body is constructed from veneers of curly maple, ash, alder and maple. This design produces a precise and intense resonance throughout the instrument's register.
Ibanez 540S-LPF
Frank Gambale plays the 540S-LPF Dessert Yellow. His first signature model, the FGM100 (the first of the Frank Gambale series) by Ibanez, introduced in 1991 is based on this 540S-LPF but has different pickups. The FMG100 was one of the 15 guitars that had been stolen from Frank Gambale house in 2004.
Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, serial #201695
Eric Marienthal always showed a predilection for the Alto Saxophone. The Mark VI was introduced by Selmer Paris in 1954. Many Jazz giants have used the Mark VI, including Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane.
I came to UA-cam to listen to Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne, and saw this pop up into my suggestions.
Checked it out of curiosity, and now I can't stop listening to this epic piece.
Amazing playing! Frank always looked like he was on his way to the gym but had a gig to play first.
Chris Moody or the beach, being a typical Aussie bogan😉
Now the whole world looks like its permanently on the way to the gym
Ahahahahahahahahahahagahag
Ready for the pub and beer afterwards XD
Lol
Chick Corea is and always will be an absolute legend. He will be dearly missed.
un absolu génie, MERCI à lui💫🌟🙏
Frank Gambale brought me here. Chick Corea kept me here. RIP, legend 😪
John Patitucci absolutely ruling the stage.
John and Dave, God's rhythm section
Came here for the whole song - Chick’s keys, Eric’s sax, John’s bass, Dave’s drums and of course Frank’s guitar. Total awesomeness.
Me too. They are equally gifted.

Chick Corea’s & Eric Marienthal’s Solos are smooth & melodic! John Patitucci & Dave Weckl always putting down a SOLID FOUNDATION who are EXPERT soloists as well!!! Such a SUPERB GROUP OF MASTER MUSICIANS!!!
Frank approaching the Holdsworthian nexus here. Lol
Great great musicianship all around. Came here for John P who is a wonderful bassist.
one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard and I'm a drummer
Recognized Eric Marienthal's sax playing right away. Terrific musician.
You should hear his solos in Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat band, he steals the show!
Came here for the Frank Gambale solo. Stayed for the Frank Gambale solo.
Amen to that, brother.
me too!
met the guy and years later saw the Chick Corea Elektrik Band.. man..mind blown!
Exactly.
How about those shoes?
8:47 - I have listened to Frank's solo here easily over 100 times. I just love his playing.
F. Gambale and his yellow Saber, what a great time!
Doesn't look like his FGM signature... maybe an early prototype...
Those early sabres were the best, I learned to play on an 88 sabre. Once the 90s hit they didn't make them like that anymore.
@@kenmasters007 it is a Ibanez 540S Frank Gambale signature!
@@Jorge.Porras maybe an early prototype.. but the first fgm100 had recessed pickup guards and tooth inlays...
@@kenmasters007 You're right, Ken. I own the one.
Frank's sweep picking is always as smooth as butter
Frank starts at 8:50
:)) thank you
seventy-four people don't like music 😃
yo! thx
my mom was friends with him and his wife!
Frank superb comping and teamwork skills start from 0:00
i am honored to have seen Chick Corea TWICE. once on his Ultimate Adventure tour, and later with Five Peace Band that included the great John Mclaughlin
I enjoy watching Eric Marienthal as background dancer during Gambale's solo
Ahhhhhh, frank in his mullet phase - absolutely beautiful stuff!!
John Patitucci's sound is so huge, and he's slap technic is amazing as well!
R.I.P. Maestro Chick Corea😭😭😭
I just visited this a few days ago. Gonna miss him so much
Seeing this news I thought it was a mistake, I hadn't heard ! dammit I'm gutted.."Return to Forever " will always be my favourite album, Crystal Silence a masterwork...very sad but very thankful, RIP Mr C
It's fun to see the keyboard and guitar swap roles for the first main section. Frank throws out some lovely rich chords. He gets his reward for layin' back when he gets his solo spot, where he casually puts burn marks in his guitar's fretboard.
Frank Gambale is a monster player!! Truly one of the greatest! As one of them has a style that is unmistakable!
The sweep master
No one ever talks about how great Frank Gambale is at just comping when CC is soloing. I even asked Frank about how to comp at a workshop and he just kind of shrugged....
Was literally just thinking the same thing
His comping is so crisp and clean that I find myself looking for the hidden keyboardist. I always think solos should be like sex, a little foreplay, the buildup, screaming, and release. Every Gambale solo is a multiple orgasm.
Frank Gambale is the king of fusion + shred! He is insane. This doesn't show his full potential.
It's called being a good musician. If you can't switch between soloing and backing up the band then you need to start from scratch.
No "comp - arison"
seeing somebody play guitar like that in 1987 was like, holy fuck ballz. You had to be there.
This has got to be one of the greatest peices of live music ever recorded, their precision is phenomenal!!
And it's live! 😯😂🔥👏👍
Frank Gamble is one amazing guitar player. Everyone in this band is amazing actually.
R. I.P. Chick corea 😔😪🙏
In 2019 this is still the best music to listen to. 👍👍👍
Sad isn’t it. Top gun 2 coming out.
Although our culture is degrading and they revert to old ideas, funny that no one is rehashing jazz. Nope. It’s so degraded that it’s forgotten,
@@BasedRoots See what you think of Yuseff Dayes and Alfa Mist live recording of The Message. Theres new stuff out there for sure. These guys are just so good, its still fresh in 2019

NicknLex CHON is decent
@@metadata5638 I saw them live. Pretty good shredding and tapping but check out Spastic Ink and you'll forget about Chon.
When I was a student at MI I would see Frank Gambale walking around the halls like anyone else and I had no idea who he was, but he always had this sparkle in his eye like "I'm going places but smart enough to keep my mouth shut".
owlcu Good advice for us all then 😉
What year ?
@@odaydrums 1985-1986
👍80s Weckl on drums! SICK!! 😀
Chick has this ability to swing you wiiiiild out into the stratosphere on his soloing. But the resolution back to the groove gives me this happy feeling I can't describe...honestly one of the greatest musicians in human history. :)
Don’t care how they dress or how they dance......this is superb musicianship. Virtuoso improv inside an intricate arrangement. The play out at the end is.....wow
The "80's"..... I was in my teens and still thought it was bad! lol (i was lucky enough to have at least had one Return To Forever album when i was a kid in the 70's, so i had something way better to compare it to)
Although, compared to these days, it all looks and sounds pretty refreshing by comparison!
Not much currently to compare to....but I occasionally hear a new artist with this same level of seemingly effortless virtuosity. Check out multi instrumentist Rachael Flowers
3.33, always cringeworthy Patitucci, always dancing like he just took a massive dump on his pants.
@@LASR71 The Yellow Jackets were cool. Weckl and Patitucci were just too much and neither one could write.
pattituci was slapping the hell out of that bass!!!
PRE-TRB 6P for John. My era with the band, as a listener. Eric is a master. Frank and Dave were the best in the game at time. John is legendary. RIP to the master and his Spanish heart.
What is often forgotten in this world of fusion excess is the various band members' dance moves. Ignore the fact that they are dressed like extras from Miami Vice, or that they are miraculously gifted musicians - bow down to the moves. The sense I get is that is that they are not necessarily in the grip of the groove, more that someone has turned on a giant gas burner beneath that stage which is gradually heating up and forcing the band to move in unusual ways.
I thought they were working on a new form of exercise where you fuse playing complex music with aerobics, it's like the ultimate multitasking. Who's got the time to head to the gym when you have to practice for 21 hours a day, so to keep fit and healthy they are combining their gigs with aerobics, think of how much money you save on gym membership, plus you've got extra time for practicing, this is my kind of efficiency. You've got to play a gig every night, you may as exercise whilst you're at it. Genius
Eric Marienthal is a sensational Sax player, absolutely incredible, as are the rest of the band, just incredible
Paul, looking at John P here, I was thinking the same as the points you make here. Brilliantly put. Very funny. 😄😂😄
@@marka6414 Mark... Excellent! 😂😄😂😄😂
John Patitucci is definitely the most advanced or physically fittest, that blue shirt and not a sweat patch in sight, that really something, that shirt looks 100% polyester, must be like a sauna in there. Those brogue look like they've been bees waxed on the sole, he's sliding around so smoothly. I've watched /listened to this so many times, It's so good. They are all absolute monster players.
the dancing part was a request from Chick, according to what Scott Henderson said once, and that was one of the things he didn't agree to do and went away
Patitucci's bass lines are great!!!
Patitucci holds everything together. His playing behind other soloists is incredible.
Saw this band on they're first tour, but after Henderson quit. Patitucci was dominant. Fantastic solos.
What a monster sax solo from Eric Marienthal!
Absolutely! So on point!
I saw them live at the Beacon Theater in NYC in the early 90’s & they were PHENOMENAL!!! And as a younger Guitarist Frank was inspiring & AMAZING!!! That sweeping Guitar Technique was GROUNDBREAKING!
Ah, the looks and sounds of the 1980s. So despised by some, yet still so innovative, adventurous, and experimental. Even the artistic and fashion 'mistakes' helped reshape the future of the music. Much respect to the Chick Corea Elektric Band. Great footage BTW, thanks for posting this memory lane moment.
Don't hate me, i saw RTF in 1973 at a college concert with Bill Connors. Dawn of Fusion. He had a HiWatt with 4x12" and I think it was turned backwards, away from the audience. One of my great peak experiences. After the Cosmic Rain. Heh heh. Heh heh.
To me the eighties, especially the second half, was a great time for jazz. Chick Corea's Electric Band, The Rippingtons, Special Efx, Fattburger, Spiro Gyra. I loved all those groups. And of course Allan Holdsworth.
Gold standard, a wonderful time for fusion.
Really? All I remember from the 80's are Pat Metheney and group, Jaco Pastorius solo, Miles Davis comeback, Yellowjackets, Steps Ahead, Brecker Bros and Branford and Wynton Marsalis. Great Bands and musicians, they are my favs. But compare them to what I consider the golden age of Fusion (Jazzrock as it was labeled then) : the 70's, with giants like Weather Report, Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Herbie Hancocks Headhunters. These guys were pioneers. Fusion was innovative, exciting and fresh in those days. Jazz fusion as a genre faded in the 2nd half of the 80's and throughout the 90's imo. I consider it dead in 2020 !
Frank Gambale is like, when you have a gig at 8 but at 7:30 you must intimidate the Italian food restaurant owner for protection
THIS 😂
lmao
🤣🤣🤣
Best sax solo I’ve ever heard
Ahhh the way the sax abruptly enters is just beautiful.
Time Track was Franks's introduction to the Electric band IMHO! When I got the album, I could not believe what I hearing on this track. Frank was amazing. Then a two years later I got the Double CD GRP Live in Japan. Wow!! That version of Time track is the best. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Scott Henderson as well. His contribution on the first Electric Band's project will live on forever.
I wish Chick and the guys would play Electric City and King Cockroach..
Just amazing! Everybody gives mindblowing performances. I love the 80's vibe too.
gambale is from another planet, definitely out of this world.
I like the outfits from the 80s...they are ready to go to the gym...wonderfully talented musicians !
Everybody's tone and groove is just awesome. great keys solo
My man Frank Gambale is probably one of the few guitarists who could hang in this musical context.
Greg Howe could now. But in 1987 Greg Howe was still playing hard rock and metal.
Is that you Gordon? Gordon Shumway?
@@StreetFighter2010 No Way. Greg's changes playing is still too digressive, too scale based. Corea's music depends on rhythmic interplay so you need a virtuoso who can be melodic and craft the music in real time, interacting, while playing the changes perfectly. Only a few can do that.
Greg's awesome... But he's just another kind of player. I would even say that his blues hand is smoother than Frank's, being Eddie-influenced... But he still lacks Jazz (in the broad sense) in his playing. And that includes phrasing and silence.
He smokes every rocker though!
holdsworth could've
@@ciarankeirle-singer1036 i was just about to mention him. I also think Pat Metheny got the skills to hang with Chick.
Best piece of music on youtube!
I saw the gig from this tour 6/11/87 at Tipitinas in New Orleans. Great memories for my father, sister, brother in law and I. There chemistry was incredible🎭🎼⚜️
anything paitucci is unbelievable bass play.
he plays 4st but putout high n low sounds in the same line.
bravo brava
No question Frank Gambale has set a very high standard in the guitar universe. Very difficult to achieve but very aspiring to emulate and learn from. I don't know any other guitarist but Allan Holdsworth who could shock people in such a way with his virtuosity. I still remember how I thought he was a keyboard player when I heard him the first time!...until my friend confirmed he was a guitarist.
Check out Matteo Mancuso…
John Patitucci.

Nice solo by Gambale great tecnic and melody
Ese Gambale es un MOSTROOOOO!!!!!!
This is the most 80s thing I have ever seen. It's also awesome.
Everybody's great, and Frank's solo really stands out here.
The fashion dress sense and hairstyles are typical of the 80s but the musicianship and playing of the Chick Corea Elektric Band is unmatched and second to none.
It beats the skinny jeans and super tight jackets look of today.
They could have dressed in coal sacks....
Still absolutely cool music!
Even if you don't like it, go to the last 30 secs, what a finish. That took some rehearsal. Magnificent.
this is the ultimate fusion song. with jazz. Frank's guitar 🎸 is awesome with guitar solo and the sax and keytar rule the stage! the bass is coolant the drums are AWESOME 👌
Miss that time. Legend.
This is the most 80s thing I have ever seen.
Haha ...it don't get anymore 80s than this from the clothes...instrument choice....phrasing.. master musicians pretty much doing a TV show intro song.....a ripping one but still....
It's a 1A with the 1980's national aerobics championships. But If you are offended by spandex, I need to warn you before you google it
JDChicago- the 1988 National Aerobics Championships brought to you by Crystal Light? LOL that video is burned into my memory forever. We will likely never see such a high concentration of Spandex in one place ever again.
Then you need to watch Journey's "Separate Ways" video.
Watch "owner of a lonely heart" from Yes or Chick's "elektric city" video.
Gambale’s solo , swings the hardest.
The nod that Frank gives to Eric at 8:59 is so expressive of true master musicians who are respectful of each others' art and the artists. It goes on to show how much they're into what they're doing and they just.. they just love it!!
Somehow I always come back to this video for inspiration :) RIP Chick
I helped make some of the stained birch Bag End monitors for Chick' and got free tickets to attend the concert. Most amazing band...
Gotta love the get-ups too. Chick lookin like he just came back from a vacation in Florida; John looks like he's ready for his barbershop quartet concert; Dave rockin the garage band came-in-a-t-shirt-so-I'll-throw-on-dad's-slick-short-sleave-dress-shirt look; Frank belonging in a hair metal group; Eric ready for bed time in his typical over-sized shirt, or alternatively, a background musician in a music video for some RnB singer doing an Afro-Beat song.
Chic just to work in a jazz so many times chic rip you were a master.
When a tune is this good, fourteen minutes feels like three minutes.
What a great playing from Gambale ! I know hes always great but really enjoyed this one.
