Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the chief executive of the City of South Bend. The city’s thirty-second mayor, he was sworn into office on January 1, 2012. As mayor, Buttigieg is responsible for the city workforce of over 1,000 employees and an annual budget of over $300 million. Buttigieg is working to strengthen the local economy by retaining and attracting businesses, partner with the local public school system, managing a cutting-edge and transparent city administration, improve neighborhood quality of life, and use proven methods to enhance public safety.
A Rhodes Scholar, Buttigieg studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford and holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Literature from Harvard. Buttigieg was born in South Bend and grew up in the Northwest Side and North Shore Triangle neighborhoods. He attended St. Joseph’s High School in South Bend.
Prior to becoming mayor, Buttigieg worked for McKinsey & Company, a top consulting firm, where he worked in economic development, energy, retail, and logistics.
Buttigieg is President of the Indiana Urban Mayors Caucus, and serves on the boards of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns and the Truman National Security Project.
Elected at the age of 29, he is America’s youngest mayor of a city with over 100,000 residents. In 2013, he was named national Mayor of the Year by GovFresh.com, sharing the honor with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and was called “the most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of” by the Washington Post. An officer in U.S. Navy Reserve, Buttigieg took a leave of absence to serve in Afghanistan during a seven-month deployment in 2014, earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his counterterrorism work.
An active musician, Buttigieg plays piano and guitar and has performed with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. He lives in the same neighborhood where he grew up and is restoring a formerly vacant home there.

More of our candidates for publuc office should be asked to reflect publicly on the founding documents and principles of this country. The qualifications for most public offices are not much more than a birth certificate and a heartbeat. This is an excellent way to make children's voices heard. Thank you for posting this video. Our children NEED a President like him.
I have seen dozens of Mayor Pete interviews and rally vieoes but none are more telling about this man than this one. His backgound is fascinating. His ability to share his personal life and listening to others is exemplary. Very down to earth.
He does not talk down to these inquisitive young people. He pulls no punches in his answers and is always respectful. Thanks for posting this video.
Mayor Pete makes this awkward kids' questioning so sweet. He is so good and patient. I wish he would really be the United States president and leader of the free world. We really need a guy like him right now.

A humble person and a brilliant mind: great combination! Being able to communicate eloquently with children as with adults says a lot about the man. Pete is reminding me all the time to be a better person: to focus on what matters and not to focus on the criticism. To criticize is the easiest thing to do in the world (look at the WH resident). Trying to understand that guy (and others who criticize) is just a waste of time/energy. I'm focusing on looking for the good in everything. Mayor Pete has my vote! He is amazing. He is just what our country needs. He is intelligent, articulate, erudite and gives sincere, well informed answers. Most importantly he doesn’t speak like a career politician. We need his intelligence, honesty and smarts! He is the future!
He respects children - no talking down or patronizing - he's an incredible human being - I thank him for stepping up to run. He has the stamina and the inspiration to do this. Pete, in my mind, already is president. The country simply has to wake up to this dream.

Even though this event was 5 years ago, it still is the same Mayor Pete now and as someone stated, a promotion in 2020.

How come there's such a huge percentage of home-schooled kids chosen for this? Is this representative of South Bend? (Honest question from an uninformed European rather weirded out by the concept at first glance ;-) )
Yes, for South Bend and the areas of Indiana around it.
NO! It's representative of shithole America! These kids are homeschooled because they don't want to get shot up while attending a school. They want to live to see adulthood.
I noticed also the lack of diversity. It may be used by Mayor Pete's political opponents.

This video was produced years ago, before Mayor Pete had political aspirations beyond being a mayor. We the Kids is a non-profit organization that puts videos like these together with high participation from the kids (with just a little help from adults) as a way to teach kids organization, preparation, interviewing skills, video production skills, etc. Any local kids are invited to participate, it just turns out that a higher percentage of homeschoolers chose to participate in this video production at the time. Indiana is a homeschool-friendly state with a large homeschooling community in the South Bend area, however, 90-some percent of kids in South Bend attend public school.
Can you imagine Trump trying to answer these Constitution questions?
An all White group of children speaks more to Pence than it should to Mayor Pete.
He needs to ask about the composition of his audience or panel to be sure that the group doesn't exclude diversity.
It is amazing how frequently this occurs and how excluding White people are and think nothing of it.
Take this video out and do a classroom with a diversified group of kids that will make your position on race fair and believable.
Do you even see this as a problem?
Baby step your way out of thinking White all the time and become a person who inherently sees a world that includes all God's

The choices you are making for your image don't include people of color. You need to see the new documentary on Toni Morrison to get a clue on what life is like for people of color.
I want to live in a color blind world and not the world you're forcing on usn as normal, in this video.

You realize this is years ago. He sounds exactly the same but its 4 years ago.
This is four years old and pretty sure he had no control who was chosen to ask him questions. Maybe non-white children didn't want to participate. Who knows.
