    "Everyone's trying to be Watchmen."
Ain't that right. Can't have a straight forward story of someone wanting to be a hero and help people. No, we gotta explain it to the audience how helping others is baaaaaaaad and striving to be good is useless or whatever all while the genocidal maniac on the loose is somehow in the right.

James Gunn is an excellent filmmaker. All three GotG films were great, and he knows how to tell a story about heroes without tearing down who they are.
Unlike Zack Snyder, who is exactly the kind of director who thinks Superman needed an edgy approach.

I will never bother to check this series out. Going after clownfish unprovoked was bad but also straight up going after fans who are critical is a no no. They are the ones who keep your franchise alive; pay your bills. But they didn’t care. Well I hope they are happy. Actions have consequences. You have not only set yourselves back Smith and Ted but also all the hardworking animators at power house. It’s funny how these individuals preach collectivism and yet they are so blind to not follow their own principles when it comes to these series. Sheer hubris.

Kevin Smith believed people would just forget and forgive him because he's a "king" of the geeks. Thinking we would believe He-man would be in it _this time,_ especially with how the show is about Adam giving up being He-Man. Remember him him gloating about Killing He-man twice along and then acts like he hadn't is just right up there for him.
He celebrated the absence of an audience when part 2 surfaced a good thing, so the lack of traction for revolution is just what he wanted.
At least Smith's fear of being completely irrelevant won't come fully true; He'll be remembered as the biggest sellout that killed a popular 80's sci-fi fantasy.

Kevin Smith represents one of the most steep autuer declines from the 00's. After Chasing Amy, it was a general downward trajectory that boomeranged with his head ending far enough up his own ass to produce Tusk, which, despite its obviously leaning on the style and motifs of better directors, was at least moderately interesting.
These days, his creative mind acts as he physically looks: like a corpse as drawn by someone who can't draw.

Everyone doesn’t want to be Watchmen. Everyone wants to be what they think Watchmen is. Alan Moore’s point in penning that graphic novel was to show how much “heroes” like Roschach or Doctor Manhattan sucked and that we need better heroes than them. It was a world of superheroes without a clear Superman to set the bar for what true heroism looked like.
But no one seems to get that and just thinks “hehe superheroes with issues that kill and have uncontrollable sex drives go brrr”.

That show also had a lot of terrible ideas planned for season 3 that thankfully didn't make it to fruition, including killing off the Sorceress from a snake bite, revealing that Queen Marlena was half-Gar, and making Fisto Teela's biological father (which would contradict the flashback we saw in the Sorceress origin episode). It's probably for the best that it ended before it jumped the shark.

Question: Why can't Adam be He-Man and King at the same time? Did they forget about King He-Man in the MOTU Classics Mini Comics?
The problem I had with Revalation was
    1: The bait and switch
2: It didn't feel like the makers cared. Like why was Castle Grayskull and the hall of wisdom one and the same when previously they were seperate? and why was Preternia heaven all of a sudden when previously it was the "Pre-History" of Eternia, hense the name. (Every Name in MOTU is a pun.)

A lot people including myself still gave the show a chance despite the clear deception. Most fans love Teela and would probably be ok with her being the central character especially if they were honest about it. Unfortunately how they wrote her to be was the most insufferable character I've ever seen and that's what turned me off.

1:36 - Counter point to Kevin's take: We were angry, because we ARE the real fans. We all enjoyed the original show and characters, and He-Man 2002 actually did a wonderful proper continuance into evolution that got cut too short, too quickly. We DO want more of He-Man, and the Masters of The Universe, and we'd mostly like confirmation of the bible's canon. Though as I've mentioned in other videos you've done on this show, there are a couple points I'd specifically like clarified, or changed to be a bit more realistic toward any given loving relationship.
I'd also like Thundercats reboot to get, rebooted... (Nevermind better call saul; better call Bob, Dot & Enzo) but I know what happened canonically in that bible; and it gets... pretty damned grim dark. They could change major points for that one, clarify the hell as directly as possible, out of all set relationsips once and for all - and I would be happy if no one got enslaved. That's all I'm going to say about it, because the bible isn't that hard to find if you want to know what is supposed to have happened to the Thundercats after the show was cancelled. (Why bother having two female main characters if THAT'S the route you're going to take in the longrun... : / )

It's to late the way I see it, people gain interest in something as long as it's good or told it's good, but that only means that new people will watch the next episode/movie. This means that so few people are going to be watching MOTU: Revolution because so many people were burned out by MOTU: Revaluation and told how bad it was. All they really had to do was be honest, Kevin Smith was so mad that people didn't want to get lied to that he basically ruined any chances to be given after the first season.

  • @shaesullivan
    @shaesullivan 9 місяців тому +5

    Two questions:
    1. What was the point of the first season in terms of storytelling; like what actually happened?
Because in scrutinizing the story you're left with this sense of apathy over the characters, their choices and the arcs they went through, if only because none of it really mattered. Teela being the sorceress was a great girl boss moment, but it doesn't mean anything in the grand finale of everything that happened. Nothing she did really matters, outside of being a series of moments which were meant to showcase how awesome she was.
    2. Why are the people behind these stories trying to tell stories that they want to enjoy instead of making a timeless narratives? I'm really curious about that because it just seems like whoever is doing the penning of the story is just trying to tell the world what they feel and how they feel, instead of making tales that will last beyond them. Like really think about it, if you go back and watch the original 80s cartoon, yes, it is janky, and yes, you can tell that they had to really make due with what they had, but there was a sincerity in trying to give lessons about growing up and being able to be a hero that stood the test of time. The 2002s version was just the same, though they focused more on individual character arcs in order to flesh out the story between the first and second season. Meanwhile, this new series barely feels like there's anyone else there other than Teela, Skeletor and Evilyn. Like really think about it, what was Man-At-Arms purpose in the show? What was the girl that Teela was obviously emotionally close to doing that mattered in the end?
This is more so, I think, the reason why the show isn't really trending. You can hate your audience and they will still come back for more, ask the Star Wars fans, but if you don't have anything for them to care about in terms of your story then they will find something else to focus on.

If the rumored spoilers from Clownfish turn out to be true it does sound like they have genuinely taken the fan criticism of 'Revelation' on board and have attempted to course correct. If they are than I am expecting 'Revolution' to be a huge improvement over 'Revelation', but unfortunately I think it won't save the show as the drama around 'Revelation' was just too catastrophic, both for the show itself and the IP as a whole. It was nothing short of disastrous. Not setting up the Snake men seems to suggest that a Season 3 is unlikely. I think this will be end of any new He-man media for a while unfortunately.

First off, that clip of Kevin Smith saying he wished the characters would stab each other in the original show really makes my blood boil whenever I hear it. IT WAS A FUCKING KIDS SHOW!!!
Seriously, how stupid can you get?! Kevin was probably coming home from high school at the time and he clearly wasn't part of the demographic that it was aiming for in the first place.
Plus, Mattel have been pretty adamant that He-Man doesn't kill.
When Canon made the live action movie, the golden rule that Mattel layed down was that He-Man couldn't be shown killing anyone because he doesn't kill. That's why he was only shown destroying robots in the film.
Secondly, what Kevin Smith should have done is say that Revelation was going to be a Death of He-Man story where we see how the world of Eternia react to the situation and have the other Masters (not just Teela) step up. You can do a Death and Return of Superman type story with He-Man, sure. But this was just handled so horribly wrong.
Kevin better had have learned his lesson from Revelation but given what a shitty person he is I have my doubts.

While this benefits from the persistence of streaming in that people can always check it out later if they hear that it's offering more of what He-Man fans expect, it would still have an uphill battle in convincing them to sit through the first season to get to this material (unless this new one is self-contained, which these should probably advertise heavily if so).

Also, let me get this straight, so Kevin (as a child) can hate-watch a show (assuming this story is true), and express how much he disliked it to the point he made it his mission as an adult to twist it into his vision. Because he disliked the original. However, when longtime fans express dislike of the show he produced, that's a major problem and we should shut up? Trying to find the logic here.

Kevin Smith lied and attacked small UA-cam channels who were proven to be right. Not even an apology once the rumors were proven to be correct and Smith a liar. There's a saying about being fooled once and then twice.

Personally, I didn't hate Revelation like alot of the social media crowd. I thought it was decent. My problem was, like others, the lack of He-Man. But I wasn't furious about it. I'm going to watch Revolution and make my own judgment as always. If it isn't good to Great, I still have the original series and the 2002 reboot to enjoy. I will see.

Yes, its too late... At least for me.
We live in an age, in which EVERY SINGLE COMPANY, seems to be at war with the source material and the audience. They always use low tactics to get you to watch a projects that is either mediocre, or filled with unnecessary modern day politicals topics that forced in the most unnatural way possible. Not to mention the entitled, arrogant and abusive attitude most creators have from the get go.
I am tired of projects like this, the people behind it, and specially the backward mentality of repeating this tactics everywhere. This show desrves its failure, because the damage was done.

To be honest, while it was weird to have a show called he-man without any actual he-man, that wasn't really my problem with it.
It just seemed poorly written, with unsympathetic characters, and weirdly, I didn’t even like the world or the re-designs.
He-man has always been…really weird with its characters, and this show just made it obvious how silly they are.
This was especially obvious when contrasted with the reboot of She-Ra, where they redid the story, the characters, both their designs and motivations, and obviously poured a lot of heart into it. Heck, they managed to turn ShadowWeaver and Hordrak into actual characters, instead of “weird big-breast lady and snorting Skeletor rip-off”
You could feel that She-Ra was written by people who cared about its characters, the world, and they had a story to tell. He-man was just soulless, and having a toy villain show up didn’t make me go ‘wow’ it made me think “who’s the glowing skull guy, and why is Scare-Glow the stupidest name ever?”
Also, I never thought the “examined the lore” or made things clearer. I don’t even remember what it was about in the end. Contrast that with She-Ra, where we see all kinds of arcs resolve and challenges overcome, and basically see Adora grow to a person, loved and with friends, a purpose, and a hot cat-lady girlfriend, who she had to work for way too hard to get, but that’s the way of cats, I guess.

Revelation got so much hate, regardless of the back ground drama, had so much stuff going on that we’ve never seen such as Scareglow, Eternia (the original play set) which was used as heaven, He-Ro and even Won-Dar. And as for lack of he man it did such but we got interesting concepts within Skeletor getting the power, what happened to his henchmen when he’s not there and Teela finally got to be the next sorceress as teased in the original 80’s show. They didn’t make fun of he man in the flash backs they just mentioned how goofy he was and he is a goofy character in the 80’s show. And as for Sorceress Lyn leaving the castle, she only left when she got the power of He, leaving room for someone to become the next Sorceress. I’m not claiming this show is high art since it definitely has issues, but it got me excited for Revolution since we now have he man back and no, him choosing between him being king or the champion is not a deconstruction, it’s just him choosing who he really wants to become and if anyone knows, in MOTUC and the mini comic's he does become king, something we’ve never seen in the shows outside of the figures and comics.

yeah, you kinda broke the franchise, kevin. and you still wrote a show "for babies"; it's very kid-oriented. should have written a more mature production honoring the fans who've been here for 40 years; we're all grown up now. take a page from DC Animated Films...they're writing for adults. *sigh

In defence of Kevin Smith ☝🏽
They gave us an updated reboot of Masters Of The Universe in 2002, faithful to the original cartoon. With more character depth AND NONE OF YOU WATCHED IT. NONE OF YOU BOUGHT THE TOYS!!! 🤨
Now you’re dissin’ Smith for subverting expectations & doing something unexpected? SOD OFF!

People watched it, the ratings were great. The death of it was the same thing thay killed the original, they oversaturated the toy market with just He-Man and Skeletor. At any given time you could find
5 different He-Man and Skeletor toys but no Stratos, Mecha-Neck, Buzz Off, Ram man, Sorceress, Evil-Lyn, BeastMan, Tri-Klops toys.

I’m honestly a bit optimistic for this season. I *still* don’t trust Kevin Smith, but I’m sure that Netflix has been breathing down his neck after the backlash for season 1. If they don’t pull another bait and switch and give He Man a proper redemption arc, I am willing to give it a shot.
