What an age we live in where we can watch two doctors discuss medical stuff for free from our desk at home. Compare that to pre-internet times where stuff like this would happen in conferences or in hospital meetings or whatever and no "normal" person would ever get to know any of this. Now millions can just watch it online. Mind-Blowing to me
please change your name, this fucks up my explorer in a sense that when your name is loaded, the scrolling changes to being sideways instead of up and down.
Your name is so long it doesnt fit on my monitor and for a second I thought my screen was broken. It literally keeps going past the comment section, impales the thumbnail of "relationship advice with Dr. K and Mrs. K" and continues onward until it goes of the screen lol
@@geeteshm4858 don't say that about your mother.. She might not be the most intelligent/confident person you've and you'll ever met but she raises you through thick and thin and she genuinely care for you. She is better for you than these 2 doctors.
@@narutospersona426 If despite everything, the point still got across, why should it matter? Why do people try to keep language in such a rigid state when language is one the most malleable and dynamic things we will ever have, for the simple sake of communication.
I love how Dr. K started approaching the meeting like a doctor patient conversation then the whole thing transformed into an extremely dense conversation between two extremely informed professionals, a nice break from the normal videos
I kinda liked when Dr Mike pushed back on Dr K's call for detachment, because it gave Dr K the opportunity to give a more clear definition of the concept, which is really helpful
@@UlfMTG Kind of, but that doesnt mean to not have empathy. Some people think not giving a fuck means not having empathy and that's just not the case. Mostly means if you can't control something then don't get too attached. Or if you are attached seeing things from a detatched view can help you see things for what they are.
@@UlfMTG it’s actually based on a philosophical viewpoint that isn’t clearly explained: The concept of detachment is based in the Hindu/Buddhist philosophy that “Everything is interconnected”, which is the idea that people lives their day to day lives thinking of themselves as their body and their thoughts and their property, when really on close examination we are an amalgamation of systems that reach across the world and the lines between what we identify as “ourself” and “everything else” is blurred. Detachment is the process of acknowledging and identifying as the whole system instead of just your body, mind, and possessions. HOWEVER, and this is a huge caveat, YOU as an individual are INCLUDED in part of that “everything else” In this way, when you do your best to become the best version of yourself, you benefit everything else because everything is connected. Seeking your own desires is a selfless thing if you are bettering yourself to no ones detriment. Detachment is not apathy or indifference. I love Dr. K but I often wonder if he himself knows this, because he often brings up detachment in a way that essentially paints detachment and egolessness as indifference and apathy. But I digress.
@@extrathicc78 I've never heard him saying detachment is apathy or indifference. He says in this video that it's not nihilism; It's separate from the axis of emotions; That's not the same as saying it's apathy or indifference to me.
That mouth making him $2 million a year. He's on camera. He's in character. Dr. K can sense that and continues to take shots and lure him out of character.
Yeah, he breaths like a rapper/mc; says as many words as possible on one breath, then takes a quick short inhalation, repeat. I found it quite distracting once I noticed it.
When Dr. Mike says "I like to hear myself speak and think so I can reflect on my own thoughts." I think thats a majorly important thing people do that sometimes can make people feel weird. Talking to yourself to figure out your own thinking is normal guys.
@@DrDipsh1t same except i laugh at my own jokes a lot cause i hate a tough crowd/silence and plus growing up with a dismissive/invalidating parent really made the joker in me become too scared to joke around anymore.
I love how Dr K smiles, try to make an input, remains silent, then glances at chat. Same haha. The level of depth into the discussion after the first half of the video picked up so much and you can't get distracted for a second. I freaking love it. I wish for more things like this.
It's really amazing to learn and listen to people who have knowledge to give. Even if we don't take it all in, just having this type of video on youtube is a plus in my mind!
I really thought, before watching this, that I was going to listen to this while doing something else on the side but everything they talked about was so interesting and captivating that I *had* to stop everything that I was doing and just listen to this.
I feel like things went from Physiology lecture (which was super fascinating) to a live therapy session (also super fascinating) and I couldn't stop laughing at certain points. I love this collab. I learned a lot about both psychiatry and physiology.
As a professional, what I'm learning from this is how Dr. K is able to take a mutual conversation and change it by asking personal questions. Really helpful
Same, I am learning a lot about communication in this particular conversation. It's interesting how the conversation shift while still maintaining the mutual vibe
Damn this is a year old but this was the comment I was looking for. I loved how Dr. K just kept pushing this lol. And also how he found it rather hard to find any damn flaws in Dr. Mike to address.
@@jmd1980 It's hard to find flaws in someone if they are just as vigilant about finding their own flaws so they can attach them to their sleeves and use them as interspersonal accountability and motivation to improve.
@@TravisRiver i know right? I couldn’t tell if the *subtle* tension was an indicator of whether Dr Mike was actually pissed/annoyed with Dr K’s poking and prodding. It really seemed like it, when Dr K would call out, what seemed to him, scripted BS versus a genuine response. This conversation, as a whole, was so enlightening - in the beginning, you can see (after watching the whole video) that Dr K took the first hour to ingratiate himself with Dr Mike, to get him to open up and (potentially) exhibit any flaws in his thinking/character/etc. It almost seemed like Dr K was trying to “expose” Dr Mike, and Dr Mike realized this, and then in response, started pushing back. Then the back and forth continued. It was truly one of the most interesting conversations I’ve seen on UA-cam
I am at 40 minutes and haven't heard anything except him bloviating about how great and humble he is. Anytime Dr. K tries to bring up anything about his mental health, he just launches into a self-aggrandizing monologue about how amazing he is.
I'm very glad Dr. Mike is talking about the DO stigma in medicine. Im an M3 in a DO medical school currently and we are still seeing stigma when it comes to comparing DO's and MD's in both the patient and physician community so its nice to hear such a great advocate for DO's because there is something special about what we do bring to the table as far as holistic medicine is concerned. Great talk
This is true as MD PGY-1, I’ve def noticed this. However the real problem isn’t MD vs DO it’s physician vs mid-levels. That’s the real problem on the horizon. Ask me why?
bruh aren't the specialties combing soon or something? the stigma now is mostly ego driven now it's pathetic. you literally wouldnt know the find anyway unless you actively search for the doctor's name or try to look at their coat to read their initials.
@@oak3785 which I recommend every patient to be doing, because there are a lot of non-DO/non-MD people in medical settings who get doctoral degrees that aren’t worth the paper they are printed on in order to masquerade as doctors. Patients should always make sure their doctor is a real MD/DO/MBBS physician that is governed by the board of medicine.
My psychiatrist went to the same med school Dr. Mike went to. It’s been utterly fascinating having a DO trained psychiatrist because she wants to know what is physically going on with me as it directly affects mental health and I have been able to drastically reduce urgent care visits because it’s like I have a second primary care. It has gotten to the point the psychiatrist knows more about my physical health than my PCP does since I see psychiatry more frequently. I gave permission for those two to talk to each other so primary knows what is going on.
As a person with ADHD the meditation part blew my mind! I've struggled with meditation over and over and over and it's because I need something to focus on. The idea of "notice your breathing" is not enough for me and caused me so much frustration and struggle. Def gonna try to find a teacher that understands this concept
I was thinking about this earlier- how stimming as psychological and physical self-regulation is not far removed at all meditation as I understand it. The way we notice or gently control the rhythm and movement of the breath seems a lot to me like the way my mind and body feels as I rock, for example; I am in a continuous therapeutic process of noticing how the energy potential builds, peaks and resolves as I rock. This is why I believe stimming is natural, beautiful and important. tl;dr stimming and mediation feel rudimentarily equivalent.
I was also brought up in a Russian-speaking family, and the whole mentality of "going through I can't" is so familiar to me, and I see people every day who internalized it to the core, and they are hard-working and resilient and tough that even when they talk about self-compassion you can feel that it is never truly there, they are going to ditch it for the productivity in a second if they need to. That toughness is more like scarring than actual maturity, balance and inner peace. That stuff is already cemented, you can't just work through it in one conversation, maybe even years won't do it. Hearing Dr Mike's story, or rather how he is saying it and what he is not saying - that just striked a chord in me
Yeah, to me it's like having a mask on that is very successful... but in the end it's still a mask that you put on. It's like you always photoshop a picture of yourself before sending it to others because it does work, but then you remember that you photoshoped your picture so in the end every success this picture gets you is invalid to yourself. So the mindset of 'i have to be productive because that what brings success' is very dangerous if you don't show anyone your real self because you are ashamed of your emotions that doesn't comply this success-mindset.
I think a big thing as the session progresses that even when Dr Mike seems to repetitively show and acknowledge is various specific areas that he puts too much weight on succeeding (especially with social media). He never said it directly but it’s clear he’s been noticing side effects from it coming out in certain areas of his life and has been specifically working on those (social media). It became very clear it was his main struggle- at least in this period of his life: Down to the stripped core is a fear of not succeeding- not so much failing completely but not meeting his own expectations and goals. Even with the NBA metaphor with meditation, Dr Mike let it show when he said “so don’t worry that it’s a waste of time.” As in- if he isn’t going to be successful automatically equates to himself as hard to enjoy. 100% overachiever energy. I think as he gets older and stuff becomes harder to “be great at” like the sports he likes, he’ll slowly realize there is value in doing them anyway because he enjoys them anyway. For me I’ve already kind of had to learn this as a past overachiever- especially with sports- due to injuries and my health- I’m not a national triathlete in fact- I’d say I’m relatively out of shape- but that does not mean I don’t like swimming or biking or running- there have always been core parts of those sports that I enjoyed unattached to how well I was at them. That’s the detachment side I think Dr Mike struggles in with lots of aspects in his life, from social media, sports and even med school and now his practice. Not that he needs to be relatively the best- but he strives and fights to be his best in what he does it seems all the time which in the end- can really interfere with truly just letting go of that and really enjoying and relaxing in the moment or whatever he’s doing. I think in the end even though Dr Mike knows he puts too much weight on success and has definitely done quite a lot of work to help him in that regard- he is still struggling with putting his own enjoyment over what he sees as “fulfillment” or “success.” Of course succeeding is enjoyable- but just like he said happiness can be short term like funny joke or ruined by stubbed toe rather than say being satisfied over your overall life or whenever you are in life- fulfillment can almost be like a long term version of enjoyment- fulfillment can be feeling successful or “fulfilled” with no regrets, but it can also be in the short moments of just enjoying the beauty of a sunset, the song of birds, the taste of your favorite meal- the sound a basketball makes when you dribble- or the self clarity or just “break” from overthinking you get during and after meditating.
@@bonko2933the problem here is that u see it wrong. It's not a mask, it's a skeleton. True, ppl r quite similiar from anatomy pov for example as these brilliant doctors pointed out, but mindsets and values may differ _a lot_ . Ppl who grew up in a (self)compassionate environment do play and fake that toughness to get some results, but then it fells off coz it's really a costume coz for them the core is empathy. But then for ppl who grew up in survivalist environment, for them that self-compassion is if not a mask then just a costume as well, they wear it to get results (see, Dr Mike here does acknowledge that he has some use of it). Then it also fells off coz keeping it is just as much a struggle as playing tough guys for others. And I wouldn't be so fast in jumping to conclusion that building oneself one way is so much superior to another. It's like being a cactus or a sequoia -- yeah sure one stands proud and tall and live longer and is awesome and such, but, well, sm1 gotta inhabit deserts as well.
"I've become very good at being comfortable with being uncomfortable, and I'm shit at being comfortable with comfortable." this hit home SO HARD, i had to stop this video and process things. Gosh, i'm speechless.
Really common for ppl who grow up poor or scared or otherwise unstable in early life. When you grow up in survival mode, being secure is unfamiliar, which throws you into survival mode again It's normal. Glad you're doing better ❤
Dr. Mike is the guy who is very very good at most things he tries due to a combination of intrinsic talent and a ridiculous work ethic. It's incredible to see someone become so insanely uncomfortable at the thought of failing at something he knows may help but he thinks he'll fail at. So good to watch.
This took a fascinating direction. Ambushing Mike with a therapy session is hilarious, especially since a lot of the things you discussed about always being available are the reasons he’d agree to it in the first place.
I had a smile on my face throughout a lot of the video. Something about two professionals talking and discussing in great detail, disagreeing respectfully and understanding each other's perspectives through dialogue and explanations is just insanely cool and fun to listen to. I love this episode.
Man this was the crossover episode I didn't know I needed so desperately. What a great intellectual, but followable conversation that legitimately presented some challenges for you both to work through. Fuckin dope
I work in public relations, marketing and media relations and it was so clear Dr. Mike was in full "media" mode - talking to Dr. K like he was a reporter. It was fun to see Dr. K poke into that and have Dr. Mike start discussing thoughts he wasn't completely expecting. It got much more interesting as it went on. I was pretty put off in the first half (I will say after the boat incident I was pretty disappointed with Dr. Mike and almost didn't watch the interview) but I also saw a lot of my tendencies in the content talked about at the end. Like expecting it is going to work is the problem and we expect it because there are studies yada yada.
Yeah, the boat thing definitely shifted my perception of Dr Mike. He's 31, but still a brat apparently judging by that dumpster fire of a backpedaling apology video lol. People are more than a collection of their mistakes though, Mike is mostly a positive presence on this platform regardless of being caught not really practicing what he preaches sometimes. I don't think you'd be morally bankrupt for still watching him.
I don’t think he was in “media” mode per se, but rather just approaching the conversation as a mutual to talk about their professions and how to help others. He didn’t really expect for it to be what Dr. K usually does. Once those barriers were pierced into, the conversation became much more natural and I feel like Dr. Mike got some insight into some of his issues. I was also disappointed in the boat incident with Dr. Mike, but over the years I’ve learned to not place value judgements on an entire person over a few actions. Mainly because I’ve made mistakes and I’d want others to hear me out. When the interview started I was skeptical of taking what dr mike had to say, but then I realized he does have some valuable insight just like almost every person does.
@@hussainshah5868 I think this is a good point. At first Dr. Mike didn't seem to be there for what Dr. K usually does and Dr. K then brought it there but that doesn't mean Mike was like "fighting the format and Dr K won or smt". Mike was more just ready for a different kind of conversation at first. And this is the conversation we got, which was nice, but that doesn't mean that other conversation couldn't have been good too.
@@bunnyrabb1t During COVID when it was still pretty bad, Dr Mike had a boat party with dozens of people. They weren’t masking much and people were in close proximity and stuff. He got a lot of flak, as he should, because he’s a doctor and was preaching COVID safety, but broke his own “rules.” He also made an apology video but it was mainly excuses and he put it on his second channel to avoid hate I guess.
I really like how they are both holistic healers, but from different schools and backgrounds. Fascinating to me how different minds approach the same problem and come to the same conclusions but in their own way. And the conversation explored a lot topics, would love to hear them talk again
He is such good psychiatrist that he gets things people struggle with seemingly so effortlessly and providing such good advice. It felt like a coaching session for Dr. Mike which was interesting yet showed the best in both doctors. I am practicing mental health clinician and watching him talk with people made me better with my clients.
This was a really great interview. With Dr Mike's resistance to meditation, it did help me tune in more towards meditation. I have much more respect for the practice now, and hearing the explanation for meditation being taught by the "right teacher" for a person to meet their current situation. I'll be doing this more often now, thank you.
As a mental health professional I love it when I hear other doctors acknowledge they don't know everything and continue to learn... The sign of a good practitioner
First entire live stream I watched in a while, enjoyed their conversation a lot and learned so much. I especially liked Dr. Mike’s story about having a successful life but still struggling with arrogance and things that we all suffer from
So relatable when Dr. Mike's trying to logic his way through meditation! I see a lot of myself in Dr. Mike: some perfectionism, через не могу, a heightened sense of duty, justice, and awareness of others' perception. So interesting to see how he's overcome some of those challenges and what he still struggles with.

Damn this one was really good I loved hearing them talk especially the part about invalidating your feelings by comparing to those perceived as worse off than you or even comparing to your past struggles. I appreciate Dr Mike's honesty about him making his own mistakes and sharing his past about his mom. Dr. K is spot on as always with his questions.

Oh how I wish Dr. Mike had watched a stream or two before going on. Dr K does a great job and directing the conversation back to the personal perspective and away from the educational tone Dr Mike takes.
yeah i agree. Dr K even mentions that he felt like he was being lectured hahah. I think Dr Mike might have misunderstood the point of the interview; he probably saw it has just having a discussion with another doctor about some concepts in medicine.
Healthy Gamer is a medical communication channel first, the point is to demystify therapy which is easier when its a personal convo. But there are also videos that are more lecture or topic based and I think having a guest come in and having this sort of conversation is very interesting for the channel.
@@steve00alt70 Nah, bad doctors talk at people. Actual quality doctors make patients feel understood. Also, given the way the healthcare system is now, it’s actually more like doctors rush through patients, throw pills, and spit out the same ‘health advice” That aside, if you think a doctor’s job is to lecture, there are way more components than that
I really appreciate Dr. Mike pushing back. I love it when 2 sides can have an exchange of ideas. I also really love that he was interested in detachment but wanted to keep his emotions. If you don't have emotions, there's nothing to be detached from. The emotions don't go anywhere. You acknowledge, you recognize it's transient, and it allows you to let go of the emotions in their time because you always knew they were gonna change. Detachment isn't from emotions. The detachment is from the desire for something outside of your state of being, or an aversion to something present. Detaching from these 2 sides is not the same thing as detaching emotionally.
Go Dr. K! When I tried to tell that self harm thing to a therapist they parried away from that conversation. So glad Dr. Mike is making these pain / mental health connections and helping people. We need more family health care that have the well rounded education and holistic approach to health. Unfortunately, I keep hearing that people can't tell the difference between holistic and homeopathic, which is horrible since one is just looking at all parts of the situation and the other is 💩
This was so interesting hearing the difference in the discussion dynamic and the problems of someone who is profoundly successful academically and in most other aspects of their life. This contrasts so much with the usual guests Dr K. has of streamers who usually were not very good at school or people who view their lives as stuck or failures. Great stuff!

Talking about something you're passionate about and that you want to share with others will help a lot! I've always been quite introvert, but if a discussion started about computers (IT nerd since my young age) or video games I couldn't stop talking ^^ If you don't atm, the day you'll really want to share something is the day you will apreciate talking :) And if not, that's perfectly fine!
Also understand that saying less is more. I'm learning that succinct speech in my words instead of inflated fluff gets to the meat and potatoes of what I'm trying to get across.
He has a very presenter style of communication most of the time. In fact he did at the start but Dr. K managed to break through that part of him. I mean he is a therapist afterall so I guess he just knows how to. While I do watch Dr. Mike, he isn't my favorite medical youtuber as a result since sometimes it doesn't feel genuine.
The sheer amount of intelligence and introspection done by the Doctors in this clip is incredible. They have managed to talk about such complex topics, yet make them to easily graspable to understand.
Watching Dr. K hassle this beautiful smart successful man, like truly give him a hard time, be incredibly difficult........ for real it reminds me why I am working to be a counselor. Slay him, I love it
Thanks for having a video on the mind body connection. I work as a massage therapist and use a very similar approach with my clients to heal the physical and emotional at the same time through body awareness and helping to facilitate nervous system reprogramming to a healthier way of moving. In my work I've found that as a bodyworker, you can facilitate an emotional shift that also brings physical healing without me ever needing to talk about anything personal or give advice outside of the range of how to care for their body, though people often suddenly bring up what's wrong emotionally when I work on those areas connected with the unconscious tension related to the internal state. My scope of practice is just the bodywork so sometimes it's difficult to maintain the delicate balance of boundaries and be present with clients who often are having a deeply emotional experience without stepping outside of the role as a physical therapist. Its a trick to be able to balance all of that and still come off as deeply present and compassionate and involved in their healing. Its shown me that a huge part of the healing process is in the therapeutic relationship ie. the way Dr K talks with everyone on the show, he somehow comes off as both genuine and providing a very open safe space for people while at the same time keeping the focus about the issues and the healing without coming off as clinical or sterile. He's just a chill dude talking about life with us haha but with the intention to help and it works. Theres a huge need for training about this way of relating to clients for all the medical fields. I struggle with undiagnosed autism which means I was born with difficulties around understanding social context and went through a lot of emotional issues from trauma without understanding why I wasn't able seemingly communicate or relate with anyone. I happen to have a genius IQ but struggle with basic things that people take for granted almost daily. I also grew up with a disabled mother and had to learn how to take care of her from a young age and learned how to ignore all the pain until I became so physically sick and have slowly recovering over a period of years. The process of healing myself with all of the training is helping me to know what the healing process feels like from the inside out and how to better understand how to help others heal.. I want to be able one day in my work to share about ways medical professionals can approach h clients in a teachable framework that helps tue in the internal healing process with the physical. I don't know how people get on to talk with Dr. K but I would love the opportunity even though I'm terriblly shy to speak publicly. Dr.k mentioned before that he isn't an expert on autism so I'd love to be able to share my experiences. I have been practicing meditation and matrial arts for many years with a deep interest in psychology, spirituality and music on a main quest to find the secret formula to total healing. I know this comment is really long (autism haha XD ) if any one read thanks and curious if others have experience in similar backgrounds. Ps. Dr. K rocks, these videos taught me how to communicate better though I'm still in the dark about what makes things socially acceptable. I still choose to just be myself and let people be how they are. What I learned watching Dr k and all the people who came on helped me to learn to communicate about my emotions and since then I met the love of my life by being able to express myself better and be there for a friend who turned out to be really special. Its fascinating how relatable every single guest is once Dr. K does his magic and everyone opens up. It's become normal in society for people to put up a mask, almost like a defense mechanism against vulnerability because society makes the vulnerable genuine person pay a high price sometimes. But genuine people are also often revered and seen as rare but its something everyone is capable of. So cheers for people being so brave to come on, and its so cool to see impact.
This video was SO COOL! I really enjoyed the conversation and the thought process. I love that you were making space to think and process the conversation and also be able to talk in depth about things with each other when they came up. I also think that this whole talk really humanized both of you. Not that either of you were not as human before, but I think that there's a lot less of a pedestal and more of an understanding that there is way more to the both of you and what comes through on the videos. Thank you both for making great content. I'm looking forward to listening more intently.

I hope you've kept connecting at least once in a while outside the public view too, and I hope we get to see you two catch up another time and discuss this past conversation and what you've both learned since then.
Did I just watch a conversation/ therapy session? This was mind blowing! Plus, loved the whole tricking yourself technique at the end, I do that to myself, but kind of like in a defense mechanism type of way, so if I fail, things don't hurt as much. I should try the other way around, to detach myself so I can actually enjoy what I'm doing. This was just brilliant!
As someone who works in physical rehabilitation, half my job is calming people down and their worries. Explaining to them that just because they had a flare up of pain that doesn't mean they worsened their injuries. A simple analogy I give sometimes is if I had a patient that just had knee surgery. If I cloned that patient and gave one a million dollars, and the other I foreclosed on their house, they would have very different pain levels that day. People seem to laugh but it also resonates with them. You explain how the physical and mental aspects work together, even on a chemical level then make people understand that pain does not always mean 'damage'
The worst part is a lot of medical professionals contribute to the issue rather than help. I remember I had a patients who came to the clinic almost in tears. She talked to a nurse on the phone and asked about her MRI results and the nurse said "Oh honey, I can't tell you all the details but you have a lot going on in your back". I looked at the MRI and it wasn't bad, most of the issues would likely go away with time, but that patient thought their back was ruined. The moment she heard how her situation is not hopeless the pain lessened literally same day. I had a patient with back pain and he wasn't in any pain until he came into his doctors office and his doctor said "Well, looking at your MRI I don't even know how you walked in here". A lot of medical professionals have teeeeerrible communication skills and bedside manner. Medical jargon galore, complex explanations, catastrophizing rather than giving patients hope, or simply just treating people with some empathy.
Highly valuable topic. An immense number of people are living every day in chronic pain and almost invisible to society for often years. Thanks @DrMike for bringing this up as a topic
Dr Mike showed a high level of intelligence and good push back in this discourse. Especially impressed with his push-back on the issue of Compliance with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Great conversation 👌
This was amazing, I loved the "debate" they had going on in the second half of the video. This is how it should go, one person presents their points and then gives the other time to respond. No shouting or talking over one another. And it seems like they genuinely tried understanding each other instead of just trying to be right.
I love that this was so unprompted/unscripted/free-flowing... And that it went from "Let's get to know Dr. Mike" fairly quickly to "Let's therapize Dr. Mike" 😃😁 As a big fan of both, this was such an incredible video to watch! 🤩
Oh my, I've been watching you both alot lately, and to see this come up in my feed is like the ultimate crossover. I haven't listened to the episode yet but I'm excited as hell.
this was awesome the way they transitioned from stories to advice and then to the meditation an all the undigested stuff (and a apparently bad prior tutor) preventing him from ever shutting down this was great also Dr Mike's medical insight was tremendous this guy actually knows his stuff
Answering "are you happy" with "I am fulfilled" resonates. I have mostly either felt unfulfilled (and miserable, or happy in an brief and strenuous way) or fulfilled. Situations (like love) may feed me happiness, but it is circumstantial happiness poured into miserable existence. The difference between fulfilled and not for me isn't accomplishing or not accomplishing, but pursuing what I value or denying it and pursuing what I am taught to value instead. The pursuit of what I value has removed my fear of dying unproven; being true to myself is enough to make my time feel real and my actions worthwhile. If I could also have a family around me of people who were safe, well cared for and kind to one another, then I could struggle in fulfillment and come home to hapiness, and I wouldn't suffer all that I do now, but I feel like happiness (and less suffering) would make less difference in my life than fullfilment already does. I am in no way satisfied with what I have accomplished or what I have, but at this time I get fulfillment from knowing my dissatisfaction and striving to make right what I find wrong. (I wish I was winning.)
I think it's worth distinguishing between happiness and the absence of suffering, because to me, they're not the same thing. Detachment lessens suffering, but doesn't bring happiness. Doing what you feel is right doesn't automatically bring happiness, but it makes it possible. You need both things if you want balance in life.
1:08:15 was so interesting. Because it's 1 of the biggest mistakes people make, and while I absolutely see Mike as 'just' a person, as a professional I definitely had expected him to understand this. Even if he didn't feel it, he should know this by heart. You should never think your problems are less important, because someone else might have worse problems from your own perspective. This is such a common problem. Why am I depressed about losing my 90 year old grandfather, while my neighbours lost their child, and (seemingly) do much better. It's never a competition, and everything matters. We all have to deal with the stuff we struggle with. I worked with a girl who had a very traumatic childhood, but she just couldn't see it as such, her mother was always in her life, she could get in contact with her father, both parents had millions, and sure she lived in our group home, and it could be better, but she saw other kids who had no money, gifted second handed clothes, who had no contact with their parents and had been in the system for most of their life etc. And sure they had a very bad hand dealt, but not only did that reduce her pain, she also didn't see all the bad things she had in life, because they were 'normal' for her. I've been in a depression for years 10+ years ago, which is still a trigger for me today, and the main one is having no job, losing my own worth and value as a person, between valueing my job as a social/youthworker very high and having had first hand experience of the importance of it, I have to fullfill my job as someone who helps other. So whenever I have no job, those depressed feelings resurface in no time. Seriously I can get a job in days, but within 24 hours of losing my job, I go insane, I feel pretty much worthless. Now I could think it's worse for others, I mean I got no financial worries, got a home, gf who loves me etc. But that doesn't change how I feel, and that matters. So yeah just wanted to post this comment. Dr. K probably says a lot of the same stuff once I resume, but I was actually very surprised Dr. Mike didn't use that knowledge in what he said, even if he didn't feel it to be completely true for himself.
I related to what Dr Mike said about listening to audiobooks too much. Timestamp : 2:15:18 I’m listening to this conversation while cleaning the kitchen & playing a game w my friend. I can’t focus/absorb the words otherwise This is also why I can’t watch tv without subtitles anymore, I have to read + watch otherwise my brain will filter out the audio stimuli in favor of internal thoughts & distractions What an interesting revelation!
It's interesting to see even within something as high-valued in society as a doctor, there are positions and courses that are looked down on or undervalued. Even alllll the way up there on the ladder
1:09:33 "You recognize [...] that every human is a human" THAT'S THE THING. That's the thing that so many people "on the internet" don't recognize. They don't integrate, deeply, that every single person you interact with, *is a human being*. It took me a while, and when I finally internalized this concept, suddenly it was easier not to be an asshole with people on the internet. I don't care how stupid they sound, or how annoyed I am, or how they're asking me things constantly... every human is a human.
The discussion of the brain causing physical pain as a defense mechanism really interests me. Through my therapy journey this year I have realized my OCD intrusive thoughts come in times of other mental stressors in a similar way, in order to paralyze me and keep me from encountering possible trauma. When I began working through my traumas and self-worth issues, those intrusive thoughts immediately and rapidly declined. It’s fascinating how our brains can work on their own to even cause further harm in order to protect is
The phrase "через не могу", pushing through the "I can't"-feeling, I think every Russian-speaking child has heard that from their parents at least once.
Ukranian here, we have the same one, it's like everyone is taught that as a child in post ussr countries, like not just taught, legit brainwashed on it and for once that is a good thing
@@zenks5883 Yeah. Except, I wouldn't say it's exclusively a good thing, it has its drawbacks too. One needs to be careful when to apply it, and to what degree. I think.
I work 40 hours a week on average. I do have to cover a lot of shifts that put me at over time. Im currently out because the covid vaccine has hit me like a truck as I expected and I feel guilty that Im taking off when I genuinely need to. I think the work force in every field has trained people to be ashamed of taking off, that you are letting down your peers and honestly, we need to make the job market change. They shouldnt be struggling because one person got sick or two people got sick at the same time. Jobs should be fine when someone has to call out for sickness or other reasons.

And that’s what it means to be a good not only student but conversationalist.
he basically said that the secret to happiness is to detach yourself from things aka not give a fuck? did I understand it right?
@@UlfMTG Kind of, but that doesnt mean to not have empathy. Some people think not giving a fuck means not having empathy and that's just not the case. Mostly means if you can't control something then don't get too attached. Or if you are attached seeing things from a detatched view can help you see things for what they are.
@@UlfMTG it’s actually based on a philosophical viewpoint that isn’t clearly explained:
The concept of detachment is based in the Hindu/Buddhist philosophy that “Everything is interconnected”, which is the idea that people lives their day to day lives thinking of themselves as their body and their thoughts and their property, when really on close examination we are an amalgamation of systems that reach across the world and the lines between what we identify as “ourself” and “everything else” is blurred.
Detachment is the process of acknowledging and identifying as the whole system instead of just your body, mind, and possessions. HOWEVER, and this is a huge caveat, YOU as an individual are INCLUDED in part of that “everything else”
In this way, when you do your best to become the best version of yourself, you benefit everything else because everything is connected.

Such fucking quiet tension in the air

@@steve00alt70 Nah, bad doctors talk at people. Actual quality doctors make patients feel understood. Also, given the way the healthcare system is now, it’s actually more like doctors rush through patients, throw pills, and spit out the same ‘health advice”
That aside, if you think a doctor’s job is to lecture, there are way more components than that
I really appreciate Dr.
Detaching from these 2 sides is not the same thing as detaching emotionally.
what an ambitious crossover
Go Dr.
And they say angels don't exist... What these two men do to help their patients and help people all over the world through the internet is nothing short of angelic. They are like angels in the flesh. What an inspiration, if only to be a better human being. So much respect.
That breathing technique at the end is pure genius invention, shuts down the thinking mind. I also do cold showers it produces a similar effect to me.
This was AMAZING! I watched/listened to EVERY second at NORMAL speed (I usually speed up all videos). The hardest part was not jumping in at times! Absolutely quality content. Would 100% watch another video between you two again. Thank you for this. 🙌👏
I already know that this is going to be an elite level interview
It’s not 😢 mike talks too much and it doesn’t seem he’s even read what healthy gamer is

I want to know how to talk fluent like this guy. As a huge introvert who hates talking I see this as a super power.
Talking about something you're passionate about and that you want to share with others will help a lot! I've always been quite introvert, but if a discussion started about computers (IT nerd since my young age) or video games I couldn't stop talking ^^
If you don't atm, the day you'll really want to share something is the day you will apreciate talking :) And if not, that's perfectly fine!
Reading helps with that
Also understand that saying less is more. I'm learning that succinct speech in my words instead of inflated fluff gets to the meat and potatoes of what I'm trying to get across.
I really loved this conversation. Dr. Mike is way more down to earth than I thought he was honestly
You should watch more of him and his fuzzy companion Bear :)
What an elite level conversation. I feel like I'm learning so much from both sides. Loved the pushback they had
The meditation part was absolutely stunning for someone who had issues getting started with meditation myself
The sheer amount of intelligence and introspection done by the Doctors in this clip is incredible. They have managed to talk about such complex topics, yet make them to easily graspable to understand.
Dr K is literally the bessst, so humble and amazinggggg

Watching Dr. K hassle this beautiful smart successful man, like truly give him a hard time, be incredibly difficult........ for real it reminds me why I am working to be a counselor. Slay him, I love it
are you happy though
Holy shit, Dr. K is so good at explaining things. I wish he was my therapist.
❤
You two are awesome and so knowledgable. Its a pleasure to get to hear from two professionals like this
This video was SO COOL! I'm looking forward to listening more intently.

your right about its potential... the philosophy has been perverted in the last 50 years though... it really should be publicly funded due to the results good osteos get
Bro i love how hes an actual Dr and UA-camr and hes got all the reasons to be too busy but when Dr K said "5 minutes 5 times a week" hes so genuine he smiles and says"Do-able" even a man as busy as he would be knows he can find the time within 24 hours a day. None of these excuses like "ugh im just so tired, im this, im that, i cant today, i don't have time" bro so much respect 🙏 i love how these two have come together!!! Thank you so much Dr K and Dr Mike ❤
This remains one of the highest-value most entertaining most enlightening pieces of content on the internet. Would LOVE to see you two talk again. I hope you've kept connecting at least once in a while outside the public view too, and I hope we get to see you two catch up another time and discuss this past conversation and what you've both learned since then.
I think sometimes I forget just how smart Dr Mike is. He's so eloquent and articulate, idk why that surprises me
Did I just watch a conversation/ therapy session?

But we needed indeed

(I wish I was winning.)
when i started watching i checked the chapters and saw Chicken Tendies and knew this is gonna be good :D
I love the fact that Dr. Mike's personal journey segment is followed by 5 minutes of chicken tendies
I love Dr.Mike ! been following him for a while. Super cool to have had him on here.

1:09:33 "You recognize [...] that every human is a human"
THAT'S THE THING.
So true
I constantly think about that but the last bit hits different. Thanks for the reminder.
