Awesome review as always guys! 👊 It's a shame that more people have not seen this film due to being put off by the intensity of J K Simmons' performance.

Looks like a really good movie, have to check it out.
Rick flair quote about wanting to be good at something. "You gotta have it inside, you gotta feel it, live it, breath it, and be willing to die for it, you gotta make an assault on life for it!"

Brillliant review guys! This movie really got to me when it was first released. Didn't really expect anything from it and got blown away by the end. The rise to greatness, the passion for one's dreams and the sacrifices one has to make to get there seems to be a recurring motif in Chazelle's filmography. Lalaland had the similar theme but anchored in a more happy-go-lucky and then melancholic approach. Haven't seen First man but the theme of pushing yourself to the limits of your talents seems to be present again. Really enjoyed this episode. Great job as always!

This is such an awesome movie. I think its about obsession and passion and what some are prepared to loose/sacrifice to pursue them. There are scenes that show Fletcher as a good and caring person but his devotion to creating a virtuoso has dominated him to abusive levels with his students.

Such a simple film on the surface but with so many layers underneath. I’ll admit that I was underwhelmed when I first watched it, but within days I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Even now, several years later, I still find myself thinking about it from time to time. What is the moral of the story? Who is the real villain? It’s a fascinating film and a true masterpiece.

indeed a great film, a character piece that connects with you as the plot progresses, the director did a good job translating music into visuals for the film, and is a powerful choice the instrument of drums, it adds more intensity for the character, and how demanding is as a player but also the life is choosing.

Great review chaps. I love this film! It's one of those where i thought "Well, I suppose i should get on and watch it" as it is so well respected and praised. i honestly did not expect to enjoy it as Jazz is not really my thing. But WOW 10/10 movie! so intense, so mesmerizing... The performances are excellent throughout and Jeez... That ending... Wow!

Love you guys and think you are awesome! Have you seen The Video Dead? Not a bad movie even by Iain's standards, and Gary would love that it's an 80's moive with all the troupes that go with it. I swear I can hear your commentaries already. like Iain saying, "the zombie just pops out of the freaking washing machine! Like, how did she even get in there? Really, how could you fit a human body in there?" Gary respondes, "It's a good jump scare tho. Classic!" Then chuckles, body bobbing.

Jazz music is great Gary. It is America’s classical music. This film asks the question can genius be inspired by this kind of abusive mentorship? What is greatness, and what price does one have to pay to achieve it? I loved this film. 🙂

It’s great that jazz music has become a widely favored genre once again. So many young people have gotten into all forms of it whether it be bop or avant-garde/free jazz :)

I like jazz but I'm not big on this kind of jazz. The same way that I like metal but I don't get down with the overly technical math metal shit. Just not the kind of music that fills me with any kind of joy.
So I also put this one off but holy shit it's great just for the acting. The drumming is great but honestly I don't give a tiny shit about it and I couldn't tell you if he's dragging or rushing either.

An amazing film. Did not disappoint after hearing all its praise. It raises great questions about the cost of ambition, what one has to do to achieve your goals, and leaves it to you to find an answer. I mean, Fletcher is a bully. But does he have a point when it comes finding greatness by any means necessary?

It sounds like this movie did for you, music-wise, what oh brother where art thou did for me.
I was before that completely dismissive of 99% of anything identified as country regardless of what specific genre of that category it fell under.
But I learned to absolutely love bluegrass because of that movie and do to this day.

This type of teaching makes no sense and I have seen them resurrect an entire series based on how powerful teaching is, the show as I'm sure everybody knows is Cobra Kai. Johnny Lawrence being beaten down by Kreese and how his idol ruined his life as an adult is very clear and it parallels what Miles Teller's character is going through from an insane teacher with overly high unreachable standards. You dump the beautiful Melissa Benoist from Supergirl for your dream, fine. You're a jackass, but it's an understable sacrifice for your legacy. However, after days and days of abuse from your teacher he has engrained in them the desperation for approval and maximized their already unhealthy obsession.
Manga Artist come to mind when I think of this type of obsession. Every single week you have a deadline, 22 pages will be due and you've got only 3 hours of sleep because you your hectic work schedule. Kwame Brown spoke on Michael Jordan from the NBA and how his teaching methods were designed to brake you down military style, but he would never build you back up and that can take a toll on you psychological health. It's not okay to be good, you will never be great , you must strive for perfection...even if it kills you. I understand to be great you have to sacrifice, dedicate your heart to your craft, bleed, sweat and shed tears for your dream, but people need to know what they're doing is correct and if they mess up it's okay, just try again.
It's like if every person who ever committed suicide for things like loneliness, depression, sadness, anger, shame, desperation had a group of friends and a supportive family backing them up in their corner willing to help them. It's really sad when you think about reality and how no one wants to be bothered by your problems, the world doesn't care, it's harder to make friends when your older, people can be cold and manipulative especially if you just keep giving and giving and they just keep taking everything and treating you like trash. Co-dependant relationships suck. This movie is deep and Fletcher is a piece of fucking shit.

The fact that hes a jazz teacher but obsessed with keeping the exact tempo is hilarious to me since jazz is literally about being able to break the rigid rules of music in the first place. going off time and coming back in time is literally a staple of some of the best jazz drummers and drummers in general. Not only is the teacher unrealistic but hes teaching people to play jazz like a robot.

  • @volksfestchecker838

The movie was great, but the ending was awful!
A perfect ending would have been, if the boy had taken revenge on the teacher by harming the teacher in the last scene for all the embarrassments. This could have been a hard punch, a kill or something else. Then, the film would have been perfect.
