I was able to see this in theaters. I've been telling everyone to watch it for over 5 years now. Terrific movie

This flick is one of the better pieces of sci-fi to be released in the past 10+ years. Dread, Robocop, and Upgrade would make a terrific sci-fi triple feature. And for reference, I usually lean more toward flicks like Alex Proyas’ Dark City for my sci-fi but Upgrade worked quite well.

I actually watched this as a double feature with The Guest. Worked really well actually

Iain telling Gary he’s grasping at the ending made me laugh while he’s grasping at every little thing to criticize it. Once he asked why the couple didn’t have children I knew I was in for it 🤣

Out of all the films you guys have covered, Ian seemed most eager to criticize this one. Which is weird since Upgrade is one of the better sci-fi movies to come out in the last decade.

What a coincidence, I recently watched this film, alongside with Dredd 2012, on the 4th of July. What a great film! The ending is a cherry on the top.

This film is a gem. Genuinely loved it. And it’s another example what you can do with very little. I think Upgrade cost something like 3 million dollars. To make. How does a film that costs so little relative to the big blockbusters of today look so much better than those blockbusters? Crazy.
Highly recommend Upgrade. And Invisible Man

    I loved this one
The camara work is so unique
    The fight sequences
It kinda has a robocop vibe to it
Yes maybe Ian has some fair questions but I guess it's all subjective in the way that maybe some details were not really required that much at least I didn't need them
Because I knew that the movie was trying to keep it simple while being entertaining at the same time.

Cyberpunk meets Saw! It's loosely based off of R Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020 a table top RPG published back in 1990, Blade Runner, Max Headroom and Robocop. All the while being directed by Leigh Whannell! It's absolutely brilliant!

The parts for the cars that Grey rebuilds aren't mass produced. They're likely produced at a small scale or repurposed. And they're expensive. Just like in the real world, Gray refurbishing that Firebird is no different from someone rebuilding a 59' Caddy or a 71' Charger or a DeLorean. You can get the parts, the materials, the lights, even the paints. But it takes research, connections, forums, assistance from classic car communities, shipping parts from all over...and it's not cheap. Which is also why the client he was building the car for was a rich guy. There's a reason that if you search the net for a "mint condition" 69' Boss 429 (John Wick's car) that they're priced between 80 and $130,000 USD; because of the cost and man hours involved in their restoration. You're not being charged 130K for a 50 year old car because it looks cool. And that being said, it's easy to imagine that while Gray's income isn't as steady as his wife's because it's dependent on how many jobs he can finish in a year, each job he completes can easily pull in $100K or more given his clientele.
Much like with the history of Gray and Asha'a relationship or the exact timeframe of the story, or the state of his post accident litigation or wife's life insurance payout, Upgrade doesn't spell every detail out. It trusts that through the show-don't-tell model of storytelling that the audience will be able to use basic knowledge to understand aspects of its characters and its world while allowing the pacing of the narrative to move along at a clip. Focus on the steak and not the peas. Don't worry about unnecessary information that doesn't impact the story directly. It's like watching a Batman movie and wanting to know what Bruce's annual income is from Wayne Enterprises. It's immaterial. He's the CEO of a publicly traded company started by his father and it offers him great wealth. The exact depth of it doesn't matter.

I enjoyed Upgrade, the Cyberpunk aesthetic was believable and realistically within reach, and was used sparingly enough to whet the appetite without being bogged down with it.
The action scenes were entertaining and really cool to watch, the story was fast paced and never seemed to drag it's heels, and the acting was good throughout.
    Cool movie all round.
    Great review guys, cheers.

This was a combination of 90’s cyberpunk like Strange Days and 70’s sci fi the two rocks the cars all of that felt like the 70’s view of the 2000’s.
That’s why it feels essentially timeless and disconnected.
Also did he get compensation? Where do you think the robots came from!
Stem knew he wouldn’t accept help until he tried to kill himself. The fact that he was entirely virgin territory was why he was picked.

Typically AI movies don’t usually do it for me when trying to show the horror of it, its a preference rather than a criticism, but this movie and Ex Machina are the 2 that really made me feel the horror from it

Cracking sci fi movie with some great twists and messed up gore.
I cant help but notice a few parallels though with malignant (which I enjoyed in a so bad its good way).
The fighting scenes are very very similar as is the notion of not being in control of yourself.

half of what makes this movie good is the camera gimmick in the action scenes. its extremely effective at not only upping the visual interest but also making you feel in place of the character being led like a puppet through those actions.

Watched this one with the wife. Tom Hardy light performed well enough and I’d say it was a decent B movie type flick with a budget. The premise while not original was well executed and has a proper downer ending.

Great review guys, just as fun as the movie I'd say. I love that this movie gave Iain so many questions, it shows that he was really invested in the whole world. I don't think he realizes that's what makes good world building. Little hints of the world around them, tho I will admit it's very isolated, so his questions are completely valid. There really isn't any reason for them not to go more into that stuff xD, and maybe they did but it got cut? You did both mention the fast pace.. I also loved all the fight sequences, the choreography was so precise and really interestingly shot. I totally believe James Wan saw some of those scenes and decided to make his own "dark-fun" movie. I also really love that they opted for the title Upgrade, because by the end of the film it takes on a different meaning.

I took it as STEM needing Gray to think he had control at the end so he could slap the guy into a mental simulation. Gray seeing his wife was STEM testing to see if he could actually affect how Gray's mind perceives things.
